Neptune and Jupiter
A new picture of Neptune with its largest moon Triton replaced last year's pic of Neptune.  Seeing was pretty good.

Also added a couple of new Jupiter pics on the Jupiter page (I still like the ones already on the home page).  The Wesley Impact Scar is barely visible (I think).  See what you think.

Good Seeing at Last!
I'm going overboard on Jupiter this year but it 'tis the season (which reminds me I still need to get Neptune because it's very near Jupiter this year).  So, new pic of GRS region from last night (8/3).  See how there's a couple of lines coming out of the GRS and they appear to form the string of material off to the right.  A smidge of the WIS can be seen near the limb as well.

Wesley Impact Site, Europa, and Ganymede
I really was hoping for some good skies for a change.  I was out for a couple of hours but only got 4 decent opportunities.  I'm posting the titled image on the home page, two on the Jupiter page, and one on the Jupiter's Moons page.

On the home page, you can see that the impact site has changed quite a bit in 8 days.  There appears to be a circle in the middle that the rest of the impact is bending around.  I'm leaving the image from the 23rd on the home page too so you can see how it's changed more easily.  Ganymede is the moon to the right of Jupiter and Europa can barely be seen "on top" of Jupiter (you can see it's shadow easily and Europa is to the right).

The two images on the Jupiter page show Jupiter a little earlier in the night.  The first image shows Europa as it's moving toward Jupiter.  The dark spot is Europa's shadow.  The GRS is in the center.  The second image shows Ganymede peaking out from behind Jupiter.

The image on the Jupiter's Moons page shows 3 of the 4 moons (less Callisto).  Taken right after the more magnified shots on the Jupiter page.  Io was closing in on Jupiter.

New Impact Site on Jupiter - taken 7/23/09
Australian amatuer astrophotographer Anthony Wesley is credited with the discovery of a new impact on Jupiter.  I've shared this photo on the Ice in Space blog where Anthony posted his discovery.  http://www.iceinspace.com.au/index.php?home  I've had terrible weather lately but did have a fair night on July 23rd and produced this image.  NASA has confirmed the Wesley Impact Site and interuppted repair/check-out on the Hubble to image the site.  http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/main/jupiter-hubble.html

More Jupiter
Imaged Jupiter last night and finally got the Great Red Spot region.  It seems to be getting more active now as it has edged towards the equator a little.  Also posted another picture to the Jupiter page - a little earlier in the session.

Also did some visual astronomy (a forgotten art) in dark skies in Bastrop TX.  It's nice to see some of the old favorites again!

This is an LRGB photo of Mars made on 12/21/07 05:52 GMT.  It's centered near Eden but Syrtis Major is still visible.  I have an 11" SCT and used a monochrome Imaging Source USB 60 fps camera at f/25.  I used Registax, Photoshop and Maxim DL during processing.  Thanks for visiting!
