New Signature Tactics

    Cautious Probe

A Cautious Probe is a 1-point Difficulty Action where the character gingerly probes his opponents defenses. Success on a Cautious Probe gives 1 Success.

    Take the Measure

Take the Measure is a 2-point Difficulty Action where the character engages the opponent, but does not use his full abilities. Success on Take the Measure gives 2 Successes.

    Finish It!

Feint is a 1-point Difficulty Action where the character seems to take one action, but actually takes another. Success on a Feint gives a +1 Modifier to the character's next Action.

    Feint

Feint is a 1-point Difficulty Action where the character seems to take one action, but actually takes another. Success on a Feint gives a +1 Modifier to the character's next Action.

    Prepared Defense

Prepared Defense allows the character to get a +1 to +3 Modifier to his Actions against an opponent, providing how well the first character has prepared for his opponent's Actions. For example:

      +0: Unprepared
+1: Minor preparation (a single plan)
      +2: Major preparation (multiple plans)
      +3: Prepared for every contingency

    Read Opponent

Read Opponent means that the character tries to predict his attacker's next Action. The appropriate Trait for Read Opponent (usually a combat Trait like Swordsman) is resisted by the opponent's appropriate Trait (again, usually a combat Trait.) Each Success translates into a +1 Modifier.

Note that most combat Traits are not specifically designed to give the ability to read one's opponent's actions, and so will be penalized at least one Success.

For example, Yoshi faces off against Nakamura. Both have the Trait Samurai:2, but Nakamura's Samurai training incorporates predicting his opponent's moves.

When Yoshi tries to use Read Opponent on Nakamura, he takes a -1 Modifier for not having the appropriate Trait, on top of the -2 Modifier from Nakamura's Samurai Trait. But when Nakamura tries Read Opponent on Yoshi, he does not take a -1 Modifier for not having the appropriate Trait, but still takes the -2 Modifier from Yoshi's Samurai Trait.

    Dirty Tricks

Dirty Tricks means that the character using Dirty Tricks does something normally disallowed by the nature of the conflict, i.e., cheating. For combat this may mean throwing sand in the eyes, begging for ones life and then attacking, kicking the groin, biting, and so on.

Each Dirty Trick can be used only once per opponent, but gives 2 Successes.

    Surprise

Surprise means that the character does something unexpected in a conflict to gain the advantage. The more surprising the tactic, the greater the number of Successes the character gets. For example:

      0: Normal tactics
1: Minor surprise (suddenly changing targets)
      2: Major surprise (acting drunk)
      3: Total surprise (ambush)
