Untainted vote invaluable
I served in the U.S. Army Reserve
and was called to active duty in Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm in 1991.
Every time I vote, I am overwhelmed with emotion recalling the birth pangs of our own country and of those brave citizens
in other countries who have struggled to fight for their freedom and to achieve democracy. The assurance of an untainted vote
is a hard-won legacy that is too precious to be changed without careful consideration.
At the minimum, any new digital vote-recording system must require voter-generated paper records that can be audited.
If the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires more time to certify such a system compliant with the new Federal HAVA regulations,
Pennsylvania should follow the lead of other states that are passing measures to extend the time they may continue to use
their proven reliable lever machines.
