Here are photos and some description as to how I
built these low-cost monitor stands for my home studio.
All I used were 2"X 6"s, 1"X12"s, some finish nails and some 3 inch screws.

You can see in the photo above how my monitor stands hold the M-Audio BX8As in the mix position.
Below are the stands as is without speakers and ready for finishing if you like.

Probably the most important thing to remember when building
monitor stands is the height placement of your
monitors in respect to your ears.
As I have read, it is generally suggested that the tweeters be about ear height
at the position you will be sitting as you monitor, track and mix.

There are 4 primary sections of each stand, those being the 2 legs, the stand base and the monitor platform.
Above is a photo of the Stand Base and below is a photo of the Monitor Platform.
The smaller blocks of wood are attached with finish nails.
The stand base and monitor platform are cut from 1" X 12"s and the legs and wood blocks are cut from 2" X 6"s.

looking at the space where the stand base will be attached.

The photo above shows the stand base being attached to the legs with screws through the leg sides into the leg attachment section.
The photo below shows the the stand base being attached to the legs with the screws through the bottom of the base into the bottom of the legs.

The photo above shows the monitor stand in it correct positioning with monitor shelf facing up and ready to be screwed into place.

The photo below shows the monitor stand pair, one facing forward and one facing rearward.

At this point one could insert stabilization screws into the bottom of each stand base.
In my own situation, I have not had the need to do so due to the weight of each stand and the weight of each monitor.
