Ultimate Bowl IV
Lenox Hill Hitmen 31 Lackawanna County Coalmen 30
Some game! With two minutes left in the UFE Championship, Lackawanna
County held a 30-24 lead over Lenox Hill. The Coalmen stood on the brink of avenging their only loss of the
season and claiming the first UFE championship for the National Conference. But the Hitmen weren't ready to relinquish
their crown and pulled off an unlikely Giants-like final drive. (Nothing quite as farfetched as Manning-to-Tyree, but
lineman Randy Thomas did catch a deflected ball for a 9-yard gain.) With 13 seconds left, Antonio Bryant snagged
a 12-yard TD pass from MVP Damon Huard (4 TDs, 362 yds). The point after gave the Hitmen their first lead of the contest,
31-30.
Lackawanna had
two huge chances to seal the deal. On a 4th-and-7 from their 36 with 7:18 left, Lenox completed a Huard-to-Wayne
toss into a huge 22-yard gain. Had the Coalmen held there, the margin would have been ten points and there
would have been much less time showing on the clock when the Hitmen got the ball back.
The
second came after Lenox closed the gap to 27-24. The Coalmen had a 3rd-and-3 at the Hitmen 26 with 2:00
left. A first down and the game is over. But, a 3rd down sack forced a long field goal, leaving the door open
a crack.
It
turned out to be the Grand Canyon.
It was an exciting hard-fought shootout. The Coalmen had nearly 400 yards
of offense and caused 4 turnovers but couldn't quite drive the fatal stake into the Hitmen who racked up almost 500 yards.
(Thanks Andrew and Mark!)
Congrats to both Mark and Andrew on a great game and
a terrific season.

Lackawanna County Coalmen 27 New Jersey Jawbreakers 24
"These slow starts are killing our fans" said Drew Brees after Lackawanna County edged New Jersey, 27-24, to advance
to the UFE Championship game, in front of a frenzied Lincoln Financil Field crowd of more than 70,000.
The Jawbreakers started quickly, scoring on their first two possessions. An 80-yard opening drive that was capped
by a Maurice Jones-Drew touchdown run, was followed by a 4-play, 52-yarder. J. P. Losman hit Chad Johnson from 34 yards
out to complete that march. After 8:38 of action, New Jersey led 14-0, and had outgained the Coalmen by 132 yards to
0. It marked the second straight playoff game where Lackawaanna County fell behind by two scores early.
Lackawanna County got back up off the mat, however, and drove 73 yards to paydirt with Brees hitting Randy McMichael
from 18 yards out, making the score 14-7. Then, O. J. Atogwe picked off Losman, and after a 6-play drive, Brees threw
the game-tying score, a 9-yarder to Eric Moulds.
The Jawbreakers drove across midfield on their next possession, but Michael Vick was stuffed on a 4th-and-one at the
Coalmen 48. Lackawanna County then marched 39 yards in 15 plays, consuming more than 9 minutes off the clock, but were
forced to settle for a Jason Hanson 29-yard field goal to take their first lead.
New Jersey roared right back downfield, gobbling up 75 yards in less than two minutes to tie it again on a 22-yard chip
shot by Adam Vinatieri. At the half, it was 17-17.
After an exchange of punts to start the second half, Lackawanna County drove 68 yards in 6 plays to grab the lead on
a Steven Jackson 8-yard TD run. Undaunted, New Jersey came right back, again. Vick would run 7 yards to end another
80-yard drive, and with 0:53 left in the third stanza, it was now 24-24.
After another exchaange of punts, the Coalmen took over at their 18 with 10:45 left to play. They would drive to
the Jawbreaker 18 in 13 plays, converting two huge third downs, before settling for a Hanson field goal and the lead.
Moments later, the crowd erupted as Ricky Manning, Jr. picked off Vick to seemingly end the game. However, he was
stripped after returning the INT some 19 yards, and New Jersey recovered with new life at their 17. The Coalmen defense
then held, forcing the Jawbreakers to turn it over on downs, to win the conference title in thrilling fashion, 27-24.
Steven Jackson was named the game MVP after rushing for 98 yards and a score, and grabbing 8 passes for an additional
58 yards. After the game, Jackson tossed the accolades aside, stating, "Drew won this one for us. He and the offensive
line were outstanding against a helluva defense". Indeed, Brees was solid, completing 21-of-30 passes for 243 yards
and two scores.
Jones-Drew led New Jersey on the ground with 86 yards rushing, while Tony Gonzalez snared 5 balls for 92 yards.

Marietta Maulers 13 BB Bombers 10
BB, down 13-10, has the
ball third down and 3 from the Marietta 15 yard line, 21 seconds left to play in the game. On the ensuing play Garcia cannot handle the snap. Ty Warren recovers for Marietta. BB was at one time
the last undefeated team in the league this year but their season ends in bitter disappointment.
Both QBs struggled in the cold and wind. Marietta survives 3 turnovers.
It would probably be more accurate to say Marietta survived Warner who turned the ball over during the
first possession of both halves as well as 1 int returned for a TD that tied the game at 10 at the time. (Thanks Dan!)

Cincinnati 24 at Rural Hall 31
Rural Hall staked to a 17 point lead only to have Cincy and Manning give 'em a huge scare. Was
