No dogs. No cats. We have ducks and geese for pets. We raise them for entertainment and eggs. We do not raise them for meat!

At this time, we have four geese: three African Greys, a white Eban and 2-week old goosling. We have one Khaki Campbell duck and one Moscovy duck. The Khaki Campbell hen lays an egg almost every day. An added benefit of ducks is that they will hunt all day for bugs around the house and yard.

We also have a female turkey. She's white, so we call her Anna Vanna White!

If you are interested in raising ducks and geese, please make sure you build them a protective, pen covered with 1 inch chicken wire. The tops and sides should be covered in the wire, plus dig into the ground and drop the chicken wire in so digging predators can not get in.

One of the most vile and determined carnivores is the little mink. I lost three large drakes in one night and it also killed my large African Grey/White China mix gander. He was a beautiful bird. We now have a large covered pen.

Now even the owls cannot get them. Many people are surprised owls will kill geese. In fact, we have one great horned owl who hangs around the house, and can hear the soft hooing after it's dark. We like them for rodent control, but they also, like I said, go after our animals. After we built the covered pen, we noticed a large indent into the chicken wire on one side of the pen. We think the owl took a straight path for the animals, but got stopped abruptly by the chicken wire! If you see any owls with a broken beak around, that's probably him.

Bossy-The mink got him.
