Sluggers dominates OFFA Bowl XVI, 37-0, to claim 3rd league title

10/25/09--Sluggers dominated Paul Trapp Builders 37-0 on Sunday in OFFA Bowl XVI to capture their 3rd title in the past 5 years.  They also won the championship in 2005 & 2006, after Joey's Mobscene won it all in 2007 & 2008.

It was a team effort for Sluggers, as five different players scored touchdowns.  But defense was the real MVP on this day, as they harrassed, hurried and stymied the Paul Trapp offense all day--forcing 2 turnovers and placing them in 3rd-and-long situations all day.

This year's championship was a far cry from last year, when it was Sluggers on the short end of a blowout, losing 32-6 to Mobscene.  With 3 titles, Sluggers is now 3rd on the all-time list, behind only Hideaway's 5 championships and Mapleway's 4.

Paul Trapp won a close game in the semi-finals, coming from behind in the final minute to score a touchdown and defeat The Next Bar, 30-26.  The Next Bar had the ball and a 4 point lead with 5:00 left, but an interception in the endzone gave the ball back to Paul Trapp and they proceeded to drive 80 yards in just over 4:00.  They scored on a slant with 25 seconds left to get the win.  But they were out of gas for the championship, as Sluggers took control early and never looked back.

Playoffs & OFFA Bowl XVI set for this Sunday

The OFFA Playoffs and OFFA Bowl XVI will be played this Sunday, October 25.  The Next Bar will play Paul Trapp Builders in the semi-final game at 9:00 a.m., with the winner playing Sluggers in OFFA Bowl XVI at 10:30 a.m.

The League Party will also be held this Sunday, after OFFA Bowl XVI, at The Next Bar, 119 S. Main Street in Oconomowoc, starting at 12:00 p.m.

OFFA Captains Meeting Set For Sept. 1,
2009 Season Starts Sept. 13

August 16, 2009

The Oconomowoc Flag Football Association (OFFA), a men's league, is preparing to start its 16th season of play this fall.  There will be a mandatory Team Captain’s meeting on Tuesday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. at The Next Bar (119 S. Main St.) in downtown Oconomowoc. Games are played on Sunday mornings, with the season starting September 13 this year and concluding with two weeks of playoffs and OFFA Bowl XVI on November 8.  Game play is 8-on-8, with up to 25 on a roster.

“It should be another fun, competitive year of football,” said Steve Rhoads, the league’s director and also a player.  “With this being our 16th year (since 1994), we are one of the longest consecutive running football leagues in the state,” said Rhoads.

“Most of the players are from this area, but we also have guys from Milwaukee, Waukesha, Watertown, Madison—even as far away as Appleton,” said Rhoads.  He added, “This is a chance for guys to compete once baseball and softball season is over, and it provides an outlet for guys to continue playing football.”  Many of the guys watch the NFL games afterwards, along with their teammates.  “Our season always starts the same Sunday as the NFL, so that is a natural tie-in,” said Rhoads.

Joey’s Mobscene/Culver’s won the title for the second consecutive year last year.  They knocked off Slugger’s in the championship game in a rematch from the previous year, winning 42-8 in OFFA Bowl XV, after a last second win in 2007.  In doing so, Joey’s Mobscene (formerly Culver’s) became the 8th team to repeat in the 15 year history of the league.

Rhoads said he expects 6-8 teams again this year, as in the past.  Besides Joey’s Mobscene and Slugger’s, other teams last year included Winger’s, Lakerz , Paul Trapp Builders and The Gig, from Milwaukee.  Usually we have a new team or two, in addition to the regulars,” said Rhoads.

“What really sets us apart from other flag and touch football leagues are the ‘Live Ball’ rules.  We have live fumbles, punts and kickoffs, which most leagues don’t,” said Rhoads.  “Some leagues in Madison are going more to our ‘Live Ball’ rules, after watching our games.  It adds an extra element of excitement and makes it more like traditional football.”  In the past, the winner of the league has also gone on to compete in a state tournament in the Madison-area, to represent OFFA, where local teams fared well and even won that tournament.

Interested teams or individual players should call Steve Rhoads at 414-651-5245 for more information.  The league’s website is www.OFFAonline.com, which includes news, league standings, game summaries, history, and even weekly power ratings.

Repeat!  Joey's Mobscene wins OFFA Bowl XV, Blows out Slugger's 32-6

NOV. 9--In a surprise to many, Joey's Mobscene claimed their second straight OFFA title by easily beating #1 seeded Slugger's, 32-6 on Sunday in cold temperatures.  The winner wasn't as surprising as the final score, as the game was expected to be close.  Last year, Mobscene (then Culver's) defeated Slugger's int he championship game when they scored a TD with just 4 seconds left to win the game.  It wasn't anything like that on Sunday, as Joey's Mobscene dominated in all facets of the game.

They are the fourth different OFFA team to win back-to-back titles in the 15- year history of the league, joining Mapleway Bowl, Hideaway and Lakerz.  Joey's finished the year with a 9-2 overall record, after going 6-2 in the regular season and earning the #3 seed.  They won 3 playoff games to claim the title, beating Lakerz, Paul Trapp Builders and Slugger's in succession.

The Mobscene handed Slugger's (7-2) their only two losses of the season, and they have been the only team to beat Slugger's in the past two seasons.  Joey's handed Slugger's their only loss of the regular season when they beat them in the final regular season week, on October 26.

The key to the victory was that the Mobscene applied consistent pressure to Slugger's QB, creating 3 turnovers to help their cause.  Their offense did their part by generating numerous big plays through the air, especially down the middle of the field.

The 16th season of OFFA is scheduled to begin on Sunday, September 13, 2009.

Joey's Mobscene Wins Twice, Gets Rematch with Sluggers in OFFA Bowl XV

For the second straight year, Joey's Mobscene will play Sluggers in the OFFA Bowl.  Joey's is the #3 seed and won two playoff games on Sunday, beating #4 seed Lakerz 12-0 in the first game, then knocking off #2 Paul Trapp Builders 38-6 in the semi-final game.  They avenged a 1-point loss to Paul Trapp earlier this year on a last second field goal.

Joey's Mobscene is also the defending champs, looking for their second OFFA title, while Sluggers is looking for their 3rd OFFA Bowl win in the past 4 years.  Last year, Mobscene (formerly called Culver's) scored with 4 seconds left in the game to beat Sluggers for their first title.  Mobscene is now 8-2 this year, while Sluggers is the #1 seed after finishing 7-1.  Sluggers only loss was last week to Joey's Mobscene, 26-16.

Game time is set for 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 9 at the Oconomowoc High School practice fields.

OFFA Playoff Matchups Set for Sunday

The playoffs will begin this Sunday, November 2 at 9:00 a.m. with the #3 seed, Joey's Mobscene (6-2), playing the #4 seed, Lakerz (2-6).  The winner of that game will then play the #2 seed, Paul Trapp Builders (6-2) at 10:15 a.m.

OFFA Bowl XV will be played the following week, Sunday, November 9 at 10:30 a.m.  Sluggers (#1 seed, 7-1) will play against the survivor of this weekend's games.

Sluggers and Joey's Mobscene have accounted for all of the last three championships.  Joey's Mobscene, formerly called Culver's, is the defending champs from 2007, but Sluggers won two titles of their own, in 2005 & 2006.

Weather is expected to be favorable for this weekend's playoff games.

2008 Season About To Begin!
Captain's Meeting Set for Aug. 26 in Oconomowoc

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Oconomowoc Flag Football Association (OFFA), a men's league, is preparing to start its 15th season of play this fall.  There will be a mandatory Team Captain’s meeting on Tuesday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. at The Next Bar (119 S. Main St.) in downtown Oconomowoc. Games are played on Sunday mornings, with the season starting September 7 this year and concluding with two weeks of playoffs in November.  Game play is 8-on-8, with up to 25 on a roster.

“We are looking forward to another exciting year of football,” said Steve Rhoads, the league’s director and also a player.  “With this being our 15th year (since 1994), we have to be one of the longest consecutive running football leagues in the state,” said Rhoads.

“We now have teams and players from all over.  In addition to Oconomowoc, we have guys from Waukesha, Watertown, Milwaukee, Madison—even as far away as Appleton and the Fox Cities.”  He added, “It is pretty competitive, but also provides a nice outlet for guys to continue playing football and have some fun on the weekends.”  Many of the guys watch the NFL games afterwards, along with their teammates.  “We have now officially outlasted Brett Favre in the state,” joked Rhoads.

The defending champs, Culver’s (from Watertown/Johnson Creek), will be back to try to defend their title.  They knocked off two-time champ Slugger’s on the final play of last year’s championship game.  In doing so, Culver’s (9-1 last year) became just the fifth different team to win the league title since 1994, joining Hideaway (5 championships), Mapleway Bowl (4), Lakerz (2) and Slugger’s (2).

Rhoads said he expects 7 or 8 teams again this year, as in the past.  Aside from Culver’s and Slugger’s, Winger’s, Lakerz , and Paul Trapp Builders were the other playoff teams in 2007; all will be back in 2008.  SWGD and Mapleway also competed last year.  A new team from the Oconomowoc-area is also expected to join this year.

“Last year was another very competitive year with somewhat of an upset in the OFFA Bowl,” said Rhoads.  He noted that the league was so strong that traditional powerhouse Mapleway finished 0-8, a year after making the championship in 2006.  Mapleway is the only team who has been in the league since its inception in 1994.  He said that many of the games were so close they were not decided until the final minute.   “I expect many more close games this year because there is not that much that separates the teams, in terms of talent.  Usually we have 1-2 new teams in addition to the regulars,” said Rhoads.

“What sets us apart are the ‘Live ball’ rules.  We have live fumbles, punts and kickoffs, which most leagues don’t,” said Rhoads.  “Some leagues in Madison are going more to our live ball rules, after watching our games.  It adds an extra element of excitement.”  The winner of the league will go on and compete in a state tournament in the Madison-area, to represent OFFA the weekend of November 15-16, where OFFA teams have done well in the past few years.

Interested teams or individual players should call Steve Rhoads at 414-651-5245 for more information.  The league’s website is www.OFFAonline.com, which includes news, league standings, game summaries, history, and even weekly power ratings.

Culver's Reigns Supreme in '07!

Wins OFFA Bowl XIV, then Captures State Title

Culvers defeated Slugger's 30-28 to win OFFA Bowl XIV on November 4.  It was the first OFFA championship for Culver's, which has been in the league for nearly a decade.  Their win also prevented Slugger's from a "three-peat" of league titles, as they won it in 2005 & 2006.  The game literally came down to the last play.  With Culver's down 28-24 and under 30 seconds left in the game, they fumbled on the 2-yard line, but recovered then scored on the next play with a 2-yard TD pass with just 4 seconds left.

A week later, Culver's captured the STATE championship, which was played in the Madison-area on November 10 & 11.  So, OFFA can boast having the top team in the state.  They were the first OFFA team to win the state tournament in Madison, sponsored by Legendz Sports.  Congratulations to Culvers!
