Successful Fund Raiser Event Described Below Finished November 2006

Fundraising Begins for
Spotswood Orange Grove Project
by Martha J. Sukites, Regent,
Susannah Chandler Chapter, NSDAR

On October 1, the Susannah Chandler Chapter, NSDAR, announced the kick-off of their fundraising efforts for the benefit of the Spotswood Park Orange Grove Project at the Lake of the Woods Board of Directors meeting. To raise funds for the effort we introduced a commemorative coverlet throw created just for Lake of the Woods. The 100 percent cotton jacquard is of the highest quality and adds a cozy warmth to any bed, offers a snug addition to a couch, and speaks eloquently as a fine tapestry wall hanging.
Captain John Spotswood, descendent of Gov. Alexander Spotswood, built his home, Orange Grove, in the late 1700s on land that is now part of Lake of the Woods. Deeds and old documents authenticate this fact. A large home and many outbuildings existed in the vicinity of our Spotswood Park. A Spotswood family burial ground is around the corner from the park on Spotswood Road. Various other cemeteries have been found at Lake of the Woods and still need identification. Their preservation is under consideration.
Susannah Chandler Chapter, NSDAR, has accepted the challenge of research and recognition of this rich heritage. A bronze marker will be placed in Spotswood Park along with information about the house remains and burial grounds. A special day of celebration will be planned to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Lake of the Woods in the spring of 2007.
Lake of the Woods is our home and treasure. We should all be proud of our rich heritage for generations to come. Please join hands with us in partnership as we begin this endeavor.
