On this page I'll describe each mural and where it can be found. I might tell you some of the historical info too.

Mural #1
National Trail Hwy becomes Route 66

On the East facing wall of Leonardo's

This is the first mural that we put up on Main Street. I think we made every mistake possible on this one. It took a year and a half in our spare time. Jim Savoy was the master artist and Peggy DeFao, Kevin Varty, I and a few other part timers helped. It depicts the old National Trails Hwy ( a dirt road) before it became the famous Route 66 and got paved. It became the channel for people leaving the "dust bowl" and depression to come west for a better life.

Dusty Rusty
And friends
Al and Bruce

This is Dusty Rusty. He is 6 feet tall in this mural, not hard to spot. There was a contest among the elementary schools to "name the rabbit". That's how he got his name. He will appear in each and every one of the 30+ murals that are going up down town (kind of like "where's Waldo"). That way, when the adults drag the kids around to see the pictures on the walls, they can have fun trying to find Dusty.

Mural #2
General Beal and the Camels

This second mural was started by Kevin Varty. He took the desert photo for the background and found the pictures or drew them for the animals and soldiers. When he had finished sketching it out and had done the desert on the right side he found it necessary to find a "real Job" to support his growing family. That's when I stepped in. Painting the animals was easy because I could do it "my way" but trying to match the style of the painting for the desert was a real learning experience! This only took 2 years in my spare time. It is 10 feet tall and 32 feet long. I'm really proud of this. It is located on the side of Clemmer's Heating and Air Conditioning at 2nd Street and the alley, one block north of Main Street.

MURAL # 3
THE HARVEY HOUSE

scan0001.jpg

William Harvey and The Harvey Girls

This was the first one that I did all by myself, start to finish.
It features the founder of the Harvey House chain and 2 of the famous Harvey Girls. The buildings depict the layout when it was it's largest, before the flood of 1936 that wiped out the large buildings at the back left. They were the living quarters for the workers and the girls that worked there, as well as the library and several of the storage buildings. This one only took 2 months after the wall was prepped (again, ask me about it some time).

On July 15th we met early in the morning, before the temperature got above 100. Jane, David, Al and I set to work to hang the 6 portraits of the Explorers and the 6 legends telling about them. They were up by noon when it was 107 in the shade and the paint was drying before it got to the screw heads I was trying to paint over.

On July 20th we had a ribbon cutting with the Mayor and members of the Chamber of Commerce. The paper took pictures and we drank lemonaide.
