Pencil and Paper.gif (245 bytes)Windows® Script v2.1.10Pencil and Paper.gif (245 bytes)

That's right, yet another Windows® script program. The big difference is that this one is free and you get the source, but wait if you order now we'll throw in the Ginsu knives, the apple peeler and the four-in-one kitchen wonder. That also means that if you want to change it you can, but don't come back to the author with your 300 line hack wanting him to fix "his" program. You break it, you own it.  That doesn't mean I don't want to hear about legitimate bugs (fixes are welcome) or enhancements (kudo's are also welcome), just that I don't have the time or facilities to debug someone else's code.

I kept script simple because I had simple needs. If your needs are more complex you probably want to look elsewhere, there are several excellent scripting programs available which will undoubtedly fit the bill.

Why did I write it?

Because I needed it (duh), I'm a cheap s.o.b., and frankly I just don't see how anyone can charge for something like this.

What does it offer?

It's small (38k), autonomous (no dll's, no ini's, no registry entries), and it allows you to automate routine annoying tasks (like typing nine passwords every time you log in).

Ok, what does it offer that I can't do in a DOS batch file?

You can wait for a particular window to open, send keystrokes to a window, branch on results, and display a message box.

What do the others offer that script doesn't?

Script doesn't have a nice integrated editor (notepad works fine), there is limited support for variables, and it has no scheduling abilities (however...).

If it's free, doesn't that mean that it's crappy junk?

Yeah, probably.  But if you feel that it's the most wonderful piece of, er, software you've ever owned and your conscience won't let you use it without paying for it, then I suggest you send a couple of bucks (or whatever your local currency is) to your favorite charity in my name.  You feel better, your charity is happier, and I get a tax write off in New Zealand (or someplace else I've never been.)
