More Tape Recorders

won.jpg

Got this gem today. Practically in new condition.
"Apolec" Model RA-11. The reels would not turn,
had to clean and lube the tape platters. Works
fairly good, some slippage due to hard rubber.
But as it warmed up, it stopped slipping.
2-17-06.
Edit: I played with it a day later, and it works perfectly. I guess the rubber had to be used some
so it would get traction. It plays perfect, it may not be as loud as it was when it was manufactured, but still
good enough.

Now this was a find. It works perfectly. It is a Realtone Courier 5 Tape Recorder. It had kids
playing and having fun. No doubt, I was just a
baby when the tape recorder was new. Typical
kids acting silly and having a good time, like I used to
on my Realtone Cassette Recorder. 2-17-06

This one is disappointing. Mechanically, it
works great. But there is no sound.
The seller did not include the reels as in the pic.
This is for display only. I am not much on delicate
soldering right now. Ross Super Corder.

.

I got a Ross tape Recorder model 200 from ebay
Feb.18, 2006. And it was the biggest disappointment
yet. Seller said it played perfectly, yet when I got it,
the batteries were all corroded inside. It's junk.
I did get a tape reel with kids and grown-ups on it.
Money back?? Neah. I only paid $16.50 TL, and the seller will not refund shipping and paypal costs, so I
wouldn't get very much back. Gave him a C+ and a positive feedback, because I'm a good sport.
If the cost was higher, I'd want my money back for sure.
EDIT: I got to fooling around with it, and did manage to get it working, by cleaning all of the spilled chemicals from the leaked batteries out of the battery holder. The connectors broke off, due to the corrosion. But I managed to make my own connectors (crude, but it works). It will play and rewind, although it plays back a little slow. I ordered 3 C battery holders from Radio Shack, and hopefully, I can make it work on 3 batteries (C) instead of just 2. It also uses a 9volt, but that connector was fine. I was almost ready to trash it, but glad I didn't!!!
2nd Edit: I added a third "C" battery, then used a length of wire to connect the battery positive terminal to the other, so it now has more power (parallel circuit). Now it plays as good as new!!!
Now, this has kids and a father talking and playing, a telephone conversation, and even a sound clip of a children's TV show, and someone mentioned 1970. I am sure the Tape Recorder was made before that. The disappointment turned out to be a joy!!!

Got this 2-22-06. No sound at all. Realtone. The seller (ebay) said it works (kinda). Said, it "plays and rewinds, but won't record".After I got it, I discovered there was no sound, either. So, when you buy used electronics on ebay, ASK if the SOUND works, as well as everything else. I did not pay a mint, so I'll let it slide. This is just going to be a display piece. Unless I can use it for parts on another purchase, if needed.

penncrest2332223.jpg

Here is a Penncrest tape Recorder. It resembles
a Mayfair. It works great, after cleaning the turntables and rubber idler wheel. But the rewind
is noisy, the rubber on the motor shaft is hard.
I lubed the spindles that the turntables sit on.
The sound was all distorted, like a lot of flutter. Must be because of the age of the tape. On the tape was old TV programs, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., and the 1964 version of Gilligan's Island (I can tell by the musical intro) Also heard the Winston commercial, "Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should". I remember those commercials. I tried a different tape in the recorder and it played perfectly. This is a pretty one, because of the chrome on the front, and tape guard.
I got it for $10.00 from ebay. Received 2-23-06.

magnavox.jpg

Got this beauty 2-27-06. It is a Magnavox, Model 1TR106M. It works pretty well, but could probably use a new belt.

miny433.jpg

This is a Miny. It is in Excellent condition. I did have to clean the rubber under the platters, and add a tension spring to make the rewind work, it is a beautiful unit, like new!!! It takes 3 C and 6 AA cells!!!
That's a lot of batteries!! 3-3-06
miny12.jpg

Same miny, showing the reels!!!

mysterymodel.jpg

This might not be as colorful, and be a no-name, but it works great with just 2 C cells!!!!! I used Turtle Wax on the clear cover to make it more transparent. 3-3-06

Edit:Just found out 3-9-06, the make of the recorder is a Claricon!!!

I have my 3 dogs barking on it, Tyler, Walter, and Captain. Only Tyler is alive as of 8-13-07.
