Area students learn to talk turkey
The ____________________ chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation is helping
local children learn about wildlife and conservation.
The chapter, one of 1,600 volunteer chapters of the NWTF across the country and
in Canada, has donated the award-winning Wild About Turkey Education Box to ____________________ elementary school in ____________________.
The National Wild Turkey Federation’s Wild About Turkey Education Box
answers the call from teachers searching for educational materials about wildlife and tells the restoration story of the wild
turkey in an exciting and colorful way.
The award-winning box is a one-of-a-kind educational tool designed specifically
for use in the classroom. It was created as a direct result of requests by educators across the country for a resource to
use in their classrooms during Thanksgiving. The NWTF went one step further: they created a tool that can be used in classrooms
year-round. The box is a scaled replica of an NWTF Making Tracks transfer box, exactly like the ones used by wildlife agencies
to transfer thousands of turkeys each year to areas of low turkey populations. Inside, the box is filled with teaching tools
such as a complete set of multi-curriculum lesson plans, a full-color bulletin board kit, an entertaining video and multimedia
CD-ROM, a fun poster, reference material and keepsakes for the students.
The bulletin board kit includes big, bright pictures of wild turkeys in different
situations ranging from roosting to nesting to feeding. Everything is included to construct a fun and educational display.
The "Return of the Wild Turkey" with "Roll Call" video is also included in the box. "The Return of the Wild Turkey" is a brief
history of the remarkable comeback of the wild turkey from the brink of extinction to a thriving population of more than 5.4
million birds today. "Roll Call" is a three-minute presentation featuring wild turkey vocabulary. The segment provides visual
and auditory support while teaching students the wide range of sounds made by wild turkeys in their natural environment. The
multimedia CD-ROM is full of educational tools including an audio track, printable NWTF Wildlife Bulletins, five Project Wild
activities for grades K-12, a printable special issue of the NWTF’s JAKES Magazine and much more.
The Know Your Wild Turkey Tom poster points out the differences between wild turkey
hens and gobblers as well as provides a brief description of the anatomy of the wild turkey.
Combine all of these great contents with the complete kit of multi-curriculum lesson
plans (including math, science, history, English, creative writing and art) and everything is provided for a fun and exciting
educational experience.
Plus, with 30 bookmarks, rulers and pencils, the children can take home the memory
of how the wild turkey was restored to its abundant numbers today.
The National Wild Turkey Federation has, for years, been a leader in introducing
children to the wonders of the outdoors and wildlife conservation through their JAKES program. JAKES stands for Juniors Acquiring
Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship and is the NWTF’s membership program for nearly 115,000 children 17 years old and
younger throughout North America.
