Rabbits and Bunnies!

Pennsylvania Dutch land is filled with rabbits and bunnies running amok!  Some have been known to play musical instruments!

The designs for all of these bunnies came from Dave Sabol, professional wood scullpture and all around nice guy.  Dave also is musically talented and his love of music has crept into several of his carving designs.  In this picture, we see a bunny playing bagpipes!  The pipes are all separate pieces add to the finished bunny.

Dave calls this piece the "Banjo Bunny".  However, when I took carved this during Dave's seminar, I had the idea of replacing the banjo with a guitar.  So, my bunny has both a banjo and guitar to play depending on his mood!  All of these bunnies are carved from wet pine wood using gouges and a knife.

A side view of the Violin Bunny!  As far as painting the bunny, I use Dave's technique.  That is using oil paints thinned out with Min-wax natural stain.  The mixture is applied wet and blended with other shades and colors as needed.  The final effect gives an earthy look to the piece as compared to the brightness that acrylic paints have.

The Violin Bunny was the toughest bunny to carve!  Not only did I have to carve a small violin, but I had to also ensure it would fit on the bunny's hand and shoulder.  Although it was tough to line everything up, I get the most positive comments about this particular piece.  I think the rabbit wearing the formal outfit with tails adds to the interest in the piece.
