Misplaced Loyalty

Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem
"PIVOTAL QUOTE"
It is not upon anyone to ascribe himself to a particular Shaykh and to have walaa‘ with those who follow him, or to have ‘adaa based upon that. Rather, he should have walaa‘ for everyone from the people of eemaan (i.e. he is a Muslim) and is known to have taqwaa (piety and obedience to Allaah and that which He has ordered and prohibited), from the Shaykhs, or from others.

THE BASIS OF RIGHT GUIDANCE
Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (d.728H) - rahimahullaah - said:
"The Religion of the Muslims is built upon following the Book of Allaah, the Sunnah of His Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and that which the Ummah has agreed upon. So these are the three infallible usool (fundamentals). So whatever the Ummah differs in, then it is referred back to Allaah and His Messenger. Thus, it is not for anyone to set up a person for the Ummah, and to call to his way and form walaa’ (love, loyalty and allegiance) and ‘adaa (enmity and hatred) based upon that, except for the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). Nor is any speech set up for them based upon which they form walaa’ and ‘adaa except for the Speech of Allaah, and that of His Messenger, and that which the Ummah has agreed upon. Rather, this is that practice of the people of innovation, who set up a person or a saying, with which they cause splits in the Ummah; forming walaa‘ and ‘adaa based upon that saying or ascription." [1]
Imaam Ibn Taymiyyah - rahimahullaah - said:
"It is not upon anyone to ascribe himself to a particular Shaykh and to have walaa‘ with those who follow him, or to have ‘adaa based upon that. Rather, he should have walaa‘ for everyone from the people of eemaan (i.e. he is a Muslim) and is known to have taqwaa (piety and obedience to Allaah and that which He has ordered and prohibited), from the Shaykhs, or from others. No one should be particularised with an increase in walaa’, except if he sees in him greater eemaan and taqwaa. So precedence is given to those whom Allaah and His Messenger have given them to. Allaah the Exalted said:
"O Mankind! Indeed we created you from a man and a woman and made you into tribes and nations so that you may know one another. Indeed the most noble of you with Allaah are those that have the most taqwaa (piety)" [Sooratul Hujuraat 49:13] [2]

SECTARIANISM AND MISPLACED LOYALTIES
Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said:
"Indeed the people of the Sunnah do not follow anyone (unconditionally) other than the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam); who does not speak from desires, rather it is nothing less than Revelation sent down to him. So it is obligatory to affirm all that he informs, and to obey all that he commands. This status is not given to anyone else from this Ummah. Rather, everyone's statement can be taken or left except for that of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). So whoever sets up an individual other than the Messenger of Allaah(sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam); such that the one who loves and agrees with him is reckoned to be from Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa‘ah, and the one who differs with him is reckoned to be from the people of innovations and sectarianism - as happens with those groups who follow certain Imaams of kalaam (rhetorical speech) - then the person doing so is from the people of innovation, deviation and sectarianism." [3]
He - rahimahullaah - further stated:
"Indeed many - from the people who say such things - follow their desires in this, in order to elevate their egos, or to gain leadership, or whatever is connected to it. Their intention is not to make the Word of Allaah uppermost, nor is it to make the Religion purely for Allaah. Indeed they have hatred for those who oppose them, even if it is a mujtahid (a scholar striving his utmost to arrive at the truth) who is excused and whom Allaah is not angry with. Likewise, they are pleased with those who agree with them - even if it is an ignorant person with evil intentions - who neither has any knowledge or good intent. This leads them to praise those who Allaah and His Messenger have not praise and to censure those whom Allaah and His Messenger have not censured. It also causes them to have walaa’ (love and allegiance) and ‘adaa (enmity and hatred) based upon their own self-desires and not upon the Religion of Allaah and His Messenger ... So whoever does this will only bring about fitan (trials and tribulations) between the people." [4]

PRESERVING LOVE AND UNITY
Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez Ibn Baaz (d.1420H) - rahimahullaah - said:
"The Religion of Allaah orders to judge (with justice) in all matters and not to have walaa’ (love, loyalty and allegiance) with your brother merely because he agrees with you, or to have ‘adaa (enmity and hatred) merely because he disagrees with you on a certain opinion or issue. This is not from justice at all! The Companions (radiyallaahu ‘anhum) differed in many issues, yet this did affect the overall happiness and sincerity between them, nor their walaa’ and love for each other - may Allaah be pleased with them all. So the Believer acts upon the Sharee‘ah (prescribed and divine Islaamic Law) of Allaah, follows the truth, gives precedence to the evidences before anyone - yet in doing so, he does not oppress his brother, nor negate doing justice to him when he differs regarding any issue of ijtihaad (personal reasoning) in which the evidences are not so apparent. Likewise is the case for those issues in which differences occur due to different interpretations of the text. So in such instances he is excused and it is upon you to sincerely advise him and to love only the good for him and not to split-up, nor to have enmity or hatred between you and your brother - and there is no might, nor power except with Allaah." The Salafiyyah

lbn Taymiyyah (d.728H) - rahimahullaah - said: "There is no criticism for the one who proclaims the way (madhdhab) of the Salaf, who attaches himself to it and refers to it. Rather, it is obligatory to accept that from him by unanimous agreement (Ittifaaq) because the way (madhdhab) of the Salaf is nothing but the Truth (Haqq)." [Majmoo al-Fataawaa 4:149]

10 Points on the Salafi Manhaj

AUTHOR:  Shaikh Ahmad bin Yahyaa An-Najmee
SOURCE:  Al-Fataawaa al-Jaliyyah `anil-Manaahij Ad-Da'wiyyah (pg. 56-
57) compiled by Hasan
Ibn Mahmood Ibn Mansoor ad-Daghreeri

The Salafee Manhaj

1. We worship Allaah by way of Tawheed. So we do not supplicate to
anyone besides Allaah nor do we seek refuge in anyone besides Him in
matters of bringing about good or repelling some harm. We perform
worship by having hatred and enmity for the polytheists. However, we
are obligated to call them to Tawheed first and clarify to them that
there is no Islaam without Tawheed and that whoever calls unto other
than Allaah has committed disbelief. So whoever persists after that,
then at that point we are obligated to distance ourselves from him
and hate him for the sake of Allaah.

2. The Creed of the Salaf is established upon the principle
that "Allaah is described with what He has described himself with in
His Book and upon the tongue of His Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa
sallam), without resorting to tahreef, tamtheel, tashbeeh, ta'teel or
ta'weel." [1]

3. We affirm for Allaah the best of Names, which He has affirmed for
Himself and which He has praised Himself with, whether they are
mentioned in the Qur'aan or the Sunnah.

4. We believe that there is no path towards achieving Allaah's
contentment, or a way towards Paradise, except through the Way of
Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). And whoever seeks
a way towards gaining Allaah's contentment through other than the Way
of Allaah's Messenger, then he has gone astray and been blinded from
the truth. And he has lost in this world and the next.

5. We believe that the Legislation of Allaah is what has been brought
down through the two revelations: The Book of Allaah and the Sunnah
of His Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). This is what our
Lord has indicated in his saying: "Then we placed you on a Sharee'ah
(Legislated System) based on Our Command, so follow it, and do not
follow the desires of those who have no knowledge." [Surah Al-
Jaathiyah: 18]

6. We believe that the Qur'aan is the Speech of Allaah, which was
revealed and not created, and that the Sunnah is what explains and
clarifies it. The Qur'aan is interpreted by the Sunnah and by the
interpretations of the Sahaabah (Companions) and those who followed
them in goodness. So the interpretation of the Qur'aan is by way of
the narration, meaning by way of the Sahaabah, the Taabi'een and the
Ahaadeeth concerning it. And the books that contain these
interpretations are the ones we are obligated to acquire and read,
such as the Tafseer of Ibn Jareer, the Tafseer of Ibn Katheer, the
Tafseer of Al-Baghawee, the Tafseer "Ad-Durr Al-Manthoor" of As-
Suyootee and so on.

7. We are obligated to take the Sunnah according to the way of the
Muhadditheen - in terms of their authenticity or weakness. So we take
what is found to be authentic and leave off what is weak.

8. We worship Allaah by obeying the rulers, as long as they are
Muslims who seek judgement through Allaah's Legislation and who
establish the prescribed punishments, and as long as they establish
the prayer. Obeying them is an obligation even if they commit
oppression. And whoever says something contrary to this and makes it
permissible to revolt against the Muslim leader, even if he may be
oppressive, then he is an innovator and a deviant. And it is
obligatory on the Muslim scholars to refute this statement of his and
to expose his deviance.

9. We hold that it is not permissible to spread the faults of the
leaders, because doing this influences and brings about trials and
afflictions (fitan), and causes them to spread.

10. We are obligated to worship Allaah through the Sunnah, by
following it and by loathing innovations and the innovators. This is
based on the Prophet's saying: "Whoever does a deed, which is not in
accordance to our affair (i.e. the Sunnah) is rejected." And in
another narration: "Whoever introduces into our affair (Sunnah) that
which isn't part of it is rejected."

This is a summary and some brief words on the Creed of the Salaf,
which we are obligated to accept and follow if we truly want
salvation and the truth. And we must renounce those opinions of men,
which cannot be traced back to any source of evidence, since men are
known by way of the truth and the truth is not known by way of men.
Lastly, we must beg and implore Allaah to show us the truth as true
and enable us to follow it, and to show us the falsehood as false and
enable us to avoid it. Indeed Allaah is Responsible for that and Able
to make it happen. And may the peace and blessings of Allaah be on
Muhammad - the best, most dutiful, most pious and purest of creation -
and on his family and his Companions.

A Beautiful Sermon

Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem

"PIVOTAL QUOTE"

I swear by Allaah that had I wanted something else, namely, affluence, then it would have been easy for me to utter the word, aware as I am of the means for obtaining this.

Options:

alhamdulillaah was salaatu was salaamu alaa nabiyyinaa wa habeebinaa muhammad

According to Abdallaah bin Bakr bin Habeeb al-Sahmee: We were told by a man in the mosque of al-Junaabidh that `Umar bin `Abd al-`Azeez delivered a sermon to the people in Khunaasirah in which he said:

O people, you were not created in vain, nor will you be left to yourselves [See 75:36]. Rather, you will return to a place in which Allaah will descend in order to judge among you and distinguish between you. Destitute and lost are those who forsake the all- encompassing mercy of Allaah, and they will be excluded from Paradise, the borders of which are as wide as the heavens and the earth. Don't you know that protection, tomorrow, will be limited to those who feared Allaah [today], and to those who sold something ephemeral for something permanent, something small for something great, and fear for protection? Don't you realize that you are the descendants of those who have perished, that those who remain will take their place after you, and that this will continue until you are all returned to Allaah? Every day you dispatch to Allaah, at all times of the day, someone who has died, his term having come to an end. You bury him in a crack in the earth and then leave him without a pillow or a bed. He has parted from his loved ones, severed his connections with the living, and taken up residence in the earth, whereupon he comes face to face with the accounting. He is mortgaged to his deeds: He needs his accomplishments, but not the material things he left on earth.

Therefore, fear Allaah before death descends and it's appointed times expire. I swear by Allaah that I say those words to you knowing that I myself have committed more sins than any of you; I therefore ask Allaah for forgiveness and I repent. Whenever we learn that one of you needs something, I try to satisfy his need to the extent that I am able. Whenever I can provide satisfaction to one of you out of my possessions, I seek to treat him as my equal and my relative, so that my life and his life are of equal value. I swear by Allaah that had I wanted something else, namely, affluence, then it would have been easy for me to utter the word, aware as I am of the means for obtaining this. But Allaah has issued in an eloquent Book and a just example (sunnah) by means of which He guides us to obedience and proscribes disobedience. He lifted up the edge of his robe and began to cry and sob, causing the people around him to break into tears. Then he stepped down. That was the last sermon he gave before he died, may Allaah have mercy on him.

For variant versions of this sermon, see Ibn `Abd al-Hakam, Seerah 43-45, 132-33; Ibn Katheer, Bidaayah, IX, 199; This translation was taken from The History of al-Tabaree, Vol XXIV, by D.S.Powers/

In the same book, it is also related that, According to `Abdallaah - his father - al-Fudayl - `Abdallaah: I was told that `Umar bin `Abd al-Azeez wrote to the Syrian army as follows:

"As-salaamu `alaikum wa rahmatullaah. Now then, whoever contemplates death frequently speaks little, while he who knows that death is certain is satisfied with a little. Farewell."
