About Us

The History of PBA Local 382 & How We Came About.

PBA Local 382 was formed in March of 2004 and was the result of a merger between two previous PBA Locals at our two prior county jails. Local 153 was from the old Essex County Jail in Downtown Newark NJ and Local 157 was from the old Essex County Jail Annex in North Caldwell NJ. Those two former locals were both chartered in the early 1960's just before state laws were changed to incorperate correction officers into the law enforcement family.

Just before our new jail opened in 2004, we brought both former executive boards together from our two former locals to obtain unity amongst all county correction officers which we never had due to having two seperate jails and our merger was a complete success story.

By mixing the boards from the two jails we achieved true diversity to better represent our membership. Since the merger we have had official elections and we were happy that the membership voted in a way that helped us to continue that diversity.

The PBA as the elected bargaining unit in our department is responsible for the protection of our legal rights, to negotiate our labor contracts and to basically do everything within our legal power and within the guidlines of state labor law to advance the careers of Essex County Correction Officers. Our original contract was negotiated and was ratified with the county in 1971 and the PBA has been the chosen and elected union who has negotiated every single contract from 1971 to present.

The efforts made in the protection and advancement of Correction Officers in this county and also state wide is done in conjunction with our state organization and that very important to acknowledge.

Every single benefit and job related recognition that we have which defines us as correction officers and what state law refers to as "Peace Officers" has been negotiated and obtained by the NJSPBA on both a state and local level.

The agenda and long list of accomplishments of the PBA is clear and historically embedded in the annals of state labor laws and collective bargaining regulations and we are very confident that the PBA will long remain the chosen labor organization in the NJ Law Enforcement Community.
