My previous toy car was a 1970 Opel GT. The Opel GT is a classic, small German sports coupe.
Opel is a German car maker owned by General Motors, and Opels were sold at Buick dealerships. Sharing its styling with the 1968 Corvette but less expensive than its GM cousin, the Opel GT was nicknamed
the “Poor Man’s Corvette” or the “Mini-Corvette.” The
GT was produced from 1968 to 1973.
My Opel was completely
restored. The original 1.9 liter engine was bored out to 2.0 liters. An after market air conditioner system was added.
The body modifications
included “Steinmetz” flares, front spoiler and side skirts, and bullet style side mirrors. The paint is Viper Blue Pearl.
The interior was completely
redone including a new dash cover, new carpet, new headliner, new door panels, and Recaro seats, and stereo with CD.
The 3 piece wheels were 7 1/2"
x 15” front and 8 1/2" x 15” rear (with Opel "blitz" decals in the
centers!). Tires are BF Goodrich Euro T/A 225/50 R15 fronts and 245/50 R15 rears.
I sold it to make room for (and help pay
for) the Cobra project. It was bitter-sweet selling it. It was a fun car, but its departure brought me closer
to getting the kit from Factory Five.
