This painting is a copy of a slide picture of me baptizing a young man in a Hickory NC river. My wife and some other
church members are standing on the bank singing, "Shall We Gather at The River?"
When I stepped back with my right foot to baptise Ernie I suddenly realized the current had washed
away the sand and I stepped into a deep trench. My left foot was still touching ground otherwise I would have gone under also.
I managed to kick fast and hard with my right leg and was able to push Ernie back up. It turned out OK and some of the
folk didn't even notice the problem. <{:-)
North Carolina has a variety of beautiful scenery. It is too bad the man who took this photo
didn't appreciate it enough to be grateful and happy. He committed suicide less than a year later. It was a terrible
surprise to all of us. But we carry on!
