CujoDropsSchleich.jpg

CUJO, RIVERA, WILSON ALL SCORE IMPRESSIVE VICTORIES!

Bedford, VA's Scott "Cujo" Sigmon (7-1, 3KO's) scored a third-round TKO over Nicholas Schleich of Columbus, Nebraska (7-3, 3KO's) on Saturday at The Lynchburg City Armory.  Sigmon began the bout by going right at Schleich and working the body of his 6'4" foe.  "That body was a big target and I knew I had to take away his jab" said Sigmon.  "After a few hard rounds downstairs I picked up the pace upstairs and went for the knockout."  Sigmon dropped Schleich midway through the third round with a hard overhand right.  The determined Schleich was trying to get to his feet when referee Chris Wollenson waived off the bout.

Charlottesville, VA's "WARTIME" George Rivera (11-4, 4KO's) also won by third-round TKO over Jesse Williams of Youngstown, OH.  Rivera dropped the southpaw Williams three times in the second round all with straight right hands.  Referee Wollenson allowed the bout to continue into the third round where another straight right hand by Rivera dropped Williams and finally convinced the referee to stop the bout.

Fairfax, VA's "WHITE LIGHTNING" Todd Wilson (6-0, 1KO) remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over Lynchburg's Maurice Chalmers.  In a battle of two classy southpaws the smaller Wilson, giving up nearly ten pounds to Chalmers, did just enough to win every round of the four round bout.

Former USBA Cruiserweight champion Emmanuel Nwodo of Baltimore, MD scored a first-round TKO over veteran Lenzie Morgan of Youngstown, OH.  The hard punching Nwodo dropped the durable Morgan three times in the first round.  Nwodo's vicious overhand right prompted one former pugilist sitting ringside to say, "I would certainly hate to get hit by that guy!"

Roanoke, VA junior welterweight David "D-Hop" Hopkins (3-0, 1KO) won by four-round unanimous decision over Antwon "Supreme" Barrett of Portsmouth, VA.  Hopkins outworked and outhustled the taller Barrett to win every round of the contest.

Rounding out the bout, Brazilian super middleweight Issac Rodrigues (18-0, 17KO's) won a very close and highly competitive eight-round unanimous decision over veteran Marcos Primera of Asheboro, NC.

"I'LL FIGHT LANGE!"

WAR TIME RIVERA READY TO STEP IN TO FIGHT JIMMY LANGE IN GREENSBORO!

"I was on my way to the gym today when I found out" says Promoter Joe Hensley referring to the fall out of the Jimmy Lange-Jimmy LeBlanc fight scheduled for July 25th in Greensboro.  "And when I got to the gym George had just stepped in the ring for the first round of fifteen straight rounds of great sparring."  Rivera went 3 rounds with undefeated welterweight David "D-Hop" Hopkins, 3 rounds with amateur standout Christian Steele, 4 rounds with cruiserweight "EL GUERRO" Juan Carlos Robles, and 5 rounds with middleweight Scott "CUJO" Sigmon.

"After George was done I went over to him and told him that Jimmy LeBlanc wasn't able to fight Jimmy Lange on July 25th in Greensboro.  Without hesitation George said I'll fight him."

"Jimmy Lange is a very good fighter, very strong and very smart.  But I'm in this game to fight the best and I think he's one of the best.  I'm in great shape now and I'm up for the challenge" said Rivera.

Added Hensley, "I think a fighter like Lange will bring the best out of Rivera.  The two best fighters George has fought are Jesse Nicklow and Sonny Bono and those fighters brought the best out in George and George beat them easily.  I think Lange is good but he's not as good as Nicklow or Taylor and I think George will beat Lange more than likely by knockout.  We'll fight Lange in Greensboro, we'll fight him in Charlottesville, we'll fight him in Fairfax, we'll fight him in Mongolia, we'll fight him on the moon!  It doesn't matter where George fights Lange because it won't go to the judges' scorecards.  War Time will knock him out!"

Hensley went on to say, "It's funny how things work out.  Back on June 12th George was supposed to fight Jonathan Reid from Season One of The Contender.  Reid pulls out of the fight a day before the fight claiming a back injury.  I'm not saying that Reid wasn't legitimately hurt but I also knew that if he was faking there was nothing I could do, even with a signed contract.  Within a matter of days Jonathan Reid had a contract to fight Jimmy Lange on September 29th in Fairfax, VA.  I don't know if Reid has signed that contract or if he'll fight Lange in September.  All I know is that it looks awfully suspect to pull out of a fight and then get a contract for another fight in virtually no time at all.  Now I hear from a legitimate source that the reason why Jimmy LeBlanc can't fight Jimmy Lange in Greensboro is because some outside entity, and I have no idea of who this person is, put a huge amount of pressure on the North Carolina Commissioner saying that the Jimmy Lange-Jimmy LeBlanc fight was a mismatch in favor of Lange and that it should not be approved by the North Carolina Boxing Commission.  I don't agree with this.  I feel badly for Jimmy LeBlanc and his camp.  I feel that LeBlanc had a legitimate chance to upset Lange in the fight.  Let's face it, with Lange what you see is what you get.  Yes, he's in great shape and he's a tough guy.  But he's got one style and one style only.  I don't care who trains him, Angelo Dundee, Buddy McGirt, Don Turner, or President Obama, he's still the same guy.  You solve that style, and George Rivera can definitely solve that style, and you beat Jimmy Lange like a drum.  We would love a shot at Lange and George Rivera will knock him out.  We're ready to go right now.  So to Johnny Lange, J.D. Brown, or whomever it is from your camp that wants to make the fight, give Joe Hensley a call and we can get this fight done."

CUJO RETURNS AUGUST 29TH!  TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

Scott "CUJO" Sigmon and Major League Boxing return to The Lynchburg City Armory in downtown Lynchburg, VA on Saturday August 29th!  Cujo will be facing an opponent to be determined in the Main Event of The Major League Boxing card.  "We tried to get Tony Jeter to fight us a while back" says Sigmon "but he told my Promoter that he wanted an obscene amount of money.  There are all kinds of ways to say that you don't want to fight somebody and pricing yourself out of the fight is one of them.  We'll get somebody soon."

"We're working on a handful of guys right now" says Joe Hensley Promoter of Major League Boxing.   "We should have something finalized within a week."  Added Hensley, "We were so thrilled with the Lynchburg area's support for Cujo that we couldn't wait to return.  We gave them a candidate for Fight of The Year with Cujo vs. The Bull in April.  Now we're looking to match or exceed the April card.  Every time Cujo fights  you're going to see a real fight with a lot of action and a lot of intensity.  If you missed the last one you've got to see for yourself what everybody is talking about!"

In addition to Lynchburg's Sigmon, several prominent Virginia based prospects are scheduled to compete including Charlottesville's "WAR TIME" George Rivera, Lynchburg's Maurice "MAD DOG" Chalmers, Roanoke's David "D-HOP" Hopkins, and Fairfax's Todd "WHITE LIGHTNING" Wilson.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through this site by CLICKING HERE or clicking the BUY TICKETS link above.  First Row seats are $55, Second Row Seats are $45, and General  Admission Seats (3rd Row and Back) are $25.  Tickets are $10 more at the door so make sure you buy in advance and save!  Doors open at 6:30PM with the first fight scheduled for 7:00PM.  Tickets are also available at The Jamerson YMCA and Buffalo Wild Wings on Wards Road in Lynchburg.  The Lynchburg City Armory is located at 1219 Main Street Lynchburg, VA 24504 in historic downtown Lynchburg, VA.

CUJO Featured In The Bedford Bulletin!

Mike Forster is the longtime sports editor of The Bedford Bulletin in Bedford, VA.  The Major League Boxing card on April 11th at The Lynchburg Armory marked the first time that Forster had  covered professional boxing in a live setting.  Said Forster, "It far exceeded my expectations!  It was a beautiful card!"  Joe Hensley, Promoter of Major League Boxing who, along with Scott "CUJO" Sigmon, originally hail from Bedford says, "I tell people all the time, if you've never been to a live professional boxing match, you don't know what you're missing!  And when you have a fighter as tenacious and exciting as Cujo fighting, you just have to see it!"  Well now Forster, and most of those in attendance know what they have been missing.  The card featured competitive bouts from top to bottom, devastating knockouts, incredibly fit professional athletes, and it was topped off by The Main Event of the evening, an early candidate for Fight of The Year, Scott "CUJO" Sigmon vs. Toris "THE BULL" Brewer.  To check out Mike Forster's great article entitled BEWARE OF DOG, INDEED! BEAUTIFUL BRUTALITY!  CUJO BEATS THE BULL IN LYNCHBURG!

cujobull1.jpg
PHOTO COURTESTY CRAIG SHAFFER

Fighting in front of a packed house at The Lynchburg Armory, Bedford, VA's Scott "CUJO" Sigmon pounded out a hard fought 8 round unanimous decision over Charleston, SC's Toris "THE BULL" Brewer.  Officials scores were 78-74, 78-74, and 77-75.  With the win Sigmon improves to 6-1, 2KO's while Brewer's ledger now sits at 14-3, 6KO's.

Sigmon began the fight intent on establishing his jab.  By the middle of the round Sigmon began following the jab with straight right hands and left hooks.  One of those right hands caused Brewer to retreat to the ropes and cover up.  Sigmon jumped on Brewer and immediately went to his body and back upstairs to the head trying to finish off his opponent.  Brewer fired back with a straight right of his own that momentarily kept Sigmon at bay.

Sigmon put on a tremendous display for the raucous crowd in attendance at The Lynchburg Armory.  Lynchburg, VA has not had a professional boxing match in 27 years but even then it is safe to say they didn't see a fighter as exciting, relentless, and undeniably entertaining as Scott "CUJO" Sigmon.  Throwing over 100 punches per round, many of them huge right hands and left hooks, Sigmon battered Brewer throughout the eight round contest.  But this is not to say that it was a one sided fight.  It was not.  The Bull would fire back with big shots of his own but he just could not keep Sigmon off of him for most of the fight.  Brewer was a game opponent but Sigmon's tenacity helped him sweep most of the rounds in the fight.  By the end of the fight Brewer sensed that he must be behind on the scorecards and went for the knockout.  Brewer found Sigmon a willing target and the two exchanged punches during the latter rounds.  Brewer was landing effective punches but Sigmon landed punches that effectively hurt Brewer, and a lot of them, which enabled Sigmon to gain the hard fought 8 round unanimous decision.

After the scorecards were read Brewer, claiming a hometown decision for Sigmon, asked Cujo for a rematch.  Cujo grabbed the microphone and announced, "Toris Brewer wants a rematch.  He's not getting a rematch.  He just had me and he couldn't do (bleep) about it!"

The undercard saw William "THE STORM" Bailey defeat "EL GUERRO" Juan Carlos Robles by unanimous decision in a 6 round cruiserweight matchup.  Scores were 58-56, 58-56, and 59-55 for Bailey.  Robles falls to 12 and 3, 5KO's.  Two of Robles' three losses have come to Bailey who raises his record to 10-16, 5KO's.  Said Bailey after the decision was announced, "I've got his number."

The knockout punch of the night was landed by Roanoke, VA's David "D-Hop" Hopkins against The Outer Banks, NC's David "Do Or Die" Derby.  A crushing right hand by Hopkins left Derby in a heap face down on the canvas in the third round.  Derby was taken to a nearby hospital for observation but was later released with a clean bill of health under his own power.

If it weren't for the Sigmon-Brewer Main Event, the fight of the night would have been Roanoke, VA's Dwayne Davis against Palm Bay, FL's Richard Grant.  The two fought at a ferocious pace for the duration of their 4 round middleweight bout.  In round two the two exchanged right hands which caused the rarest of occurrences in boxing, a double knockdown.  But the referee only ruled a knockdown for Grant and began counting Davis.  Round three saw Grant land a huge right hand that froze Davis momentarily in his corner.  But the game Davis fired back in round 4 and took the round.  When the judges' scorecards were read it was announced that Richard Grant was the winner by unanimous decision over the very game Dwayne Davis in a thrilling 4 round war.

The opening bout of the evening saw a chiseled Francois "The African Warrior" Ambang, Richmond, VA, pound out a 4 round unanimous decision over the debuting Darryl Johnson from Charleston, SC in a cruiserweight contest.

The walkout bout of the evening saw Ivanhoe, NC's Donnell "The Real Touch of Sleep" Holmes stop Danville, VA's Curtis Taylor in the second round of their heavyweight bout.

Juan Robles Now Fighting William Bailey In Rematch On April 11th!
WEST VIRGINIA'S PEARL DOTSON OUT AS ROBLES OPPONENT!

Waynesboro, VA’s “EL GUERRO” Juan Carlos Robles holds an outstanding professional boxing record of 12 wins and 2 losses.  Robles is currently the 22nd ranked American cruiserweight according to BoxRec.com.  One of Robles’ losses occurred against Portsmouth, VA’s William “THE STORM” Bailey on August 16th of last year.  It was a classic battle between two talented  professional boxers that left about half of those in attendance feeling Robles won, while the other half gave Bailey the nod.  “I’m excited about the rematch” says Robles.  “This time I don’t want to leave it in the judge’s hands and I plan on winning the fight on April 11th by knockout!  After I erase the loss against Bailey, I want Bobby Gunn for the titles and rankings he has.”  Bobby Gunn is currently ranked in the Top 15 in the World by both the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Council.  If Robles defeats Gunn, he will gain Gunn’s Top 15 ranking and be eligible for a World Title shot.  “I’m not looking past Bailey.  In fact, I can't wait for the rematch!” says Robles “but he’s standing in the way of a huge fight in the future and I just can’t have that!”  Tickets for the Robles-Bailey rematch, as well as Scott "CUJO" Sigmon vs. Toris "THE BULL" Brewer, "WAR TIME" George Rivera vs. Michael Corleone, and more are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking HERE!

Lynchburg, VA BEWARE OF DOG! CUJO UNLEASHED!  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO APPREHEND!
LYNCHBURG'S SCOTT "CUJO" SIGMON VOWS TO CLEAN UP THE GARBAGE IN BOXING STARTING WITH TORIS "THE BULL" BREWER ON APRIL 11TH AT THE LYNCHBURG ARMORY!

badboysbigsize.JPG

Lynchburg, VA's Scott "CUJO" Sigmon (5-1, 2KO's) calls himself "Boxing's Uncrowned King and Savior" and has been called the Real Life Rocky Balboa and The Man That Loves To Fight.  "I will be World Champion" Sigmon says giving a look that lets you know he is 100% serious.  "I am what boxing needs.  A fighter who loves to fight and loves the sport of boxing.  And I take it personally when these so called fighters like Toris Brewer fight bum, after bum, after bum and get an inflated record like he's got at 14 and 2.  I've already gone on record and called Toris a bum months ago.  I told my Promoter to do whatever it took to get me the fight with Brewer.  Toris signed the contract and I can't wait for April 11th.  As long as boxing has fighters like Toris Brewer fighting, boxing is sick, it is diseased.  Toris Brewer is the disease and I am the cure!  You will see on April 11th!"

Asked if Toris Brewer's record of 14 wins, 2 losses, and 6KO's gives him any cause for concern Sigmon replies, "Have you been listening to me?  Everything I'm telling you I mean.  I don't lie, I'm speaking the truth.  He's a bum and I'm going to expose him on April 11th.  I'm going to knock him out.  There is no way he can go 8 rounds with me.  I'm in great shape.  I spar 15, 20 rounds at a time with great sparring partners.  I do more roadwork than anybody in boxing.  I'm ready to fight right now!  If I get a call and somebody tells me Toris is down the street then I'll meet him in the street and I'll whip him!  He's got it coming to him!  Toris Brewer is garbage and April 11th is trash day and I'm taking out the garbage!"

Upon further review, Brewer's record reveals a quality win over respected DC area light heavyweight Carlos Jones, a fighter known as a spoiler in local boxing circles.  "He's talking about me and who I've fought.  Who has he fought?" says a disgruntled Brewer.  "Jones ain't no chump.  He's better than the guys he beat.  If he thinks I'm coming all the way up there to get whipped he's flat out wrong.  I'm coming up there to whip a dog!  I'm going to beat him like a dog!  I'll turn Cujo in to my pet.  They say have your pets spayed or neutered.  He's just a stepping stone to me.  He ain't nobody!"

The Co-Main Event of the evening features a solid cruiserweight matchup between Waynesboro, VA's "EL GUERRO" Juan Carlos Robles (12-2, 5KO's) and Huntington, WV's Pearl Dotson (7-2, 4KO's).  Robles' most recent outing saw him score an impressive victory over the talented Francois Ambang.  "I'll be ready for this guy on April 11th" says Robles.  "I've been training hard and I'm in great shape.  I'm not looking past him but after I beat him I want Bobby Gunn and that title and ranking he has."  Gunn is currently ranked #15 in the world in the WBC and #11 in the world in the WBA and holds the USNBC and NABA Cruiserweight titles.  But in order to get to Gunn, Robles has to cope with a rough customer in West Virginia's Pearl Dotson.  Dotson hails from a boxing family and is considered one of the best cruiserweights in the region.

Charlottesville, VA's "WAR TIME" George Rivera (10-4, 3KO's) takes on Long Island, New York's Michael "THE GODFATHER" Corleone, a veteran of 35 professional fights and the former IBO World Champion as well as a former World Kickboxing Champion.  "I'm working hard and staying active" says Rivera.  "I want to continue to improve each time I fight and I want to fight as often as possible."

In addition, Roanoke, VA's Dwayne Davis will be taking on Palm Bay, Florida's Richard Grant in a middleweight battle.  Also, Roanoke's David Hopkins will be taking on North Carolina's David Derby in a junior welterweight fight.  Rounding out the card is a special attraction heavyweight bout between undefeated North Carolina heavyweight Donnell Holmes who will be taking on Danville, VA's Curtis Taylor.

George Rivera's Interview With Charlottesville's CBS 19!

WAR TIME WINS BIG IN FRONT OF HOMETOWN FANS!

Robles And Cujo Also Victorious!

“WAR TIME” George Rivera, 156 lbs. Charlottesville, VA won a 6 round unanimous decision over the very game Ike ”THE PRESIDENT” Ezeji 153 lbs., Bronx, NY in front of Rivera’s hometown fans at The Fluvanna High School Gym.  Official scores were 58-56 on all three judge’s scorecards.  Ezeji came to fight and actually scored an official knockdown of Rivera in the first round.  From the second to the 6th Rivera swept every round and almost stopped Ezeji at the end of the fight.  Ezeji had several moments of his own and proved to be a spirited opponent for Rivera for the duration of the bout.  With the win Rivera goes to 10 and 4 with 3KO’s.  Rivera will return on April 11th at The Lynchburg Armory against Rodney Green.  This will be a rematch for the Mid-Atlantic Jr. Middleweight Championship previously held by Rivera and now held by Green.

Juan Carlos Robles, 200 lbs. Waynesboro, VA won a 6 round unanimous decision over Francois “The African Warrior” Ambang, 196 lbs. Richmond, VA.  Scores were 59-55, 59-55, and 58-56 for Robles.  Both fighters showed high levels of skill in their six round showdown with Robles showing he is a contender on the verge of something big and Ambang showing he is a solid young prospect on the rise.  Ambang caught Robles with a solid overhand right in the first and a nice left hook in the second.  Robles worked behind a stiff left jab for most of the bout and in the middle rounds began following up with solid power combinations.  It was a true professional prize fight between two guys that can fight.  Very good performance by both men.  With the win Robles goes to 12 and 2 with 5KO’s.  Robles will return on April 11th in Lynchburg, VA against an opponent to be determined.

Scott “Cujo” Sigmon Bedford, VA 171 lbs., stopped Virginia Beach, VA’s previously undefeated Frankie “The Freight Train” Filippone 168 lbs. when Fillipone couldn’t come out for the third round due to an injured, and possibly broken, hand.  The first round was all Filippone as Sigmon had a hard time with Filippone’s southpaw style.  Filippone hit Sigmon with just about everything in the first.  But in round two Cujo hit Filippone on every part of his body, arms, shoulders, chest, that he legally could.  Cujo turned it in to a brawl and swelled up Filippone’s eye and bloodied his nose in the second.  If the fight wasn’t stopped this one would have been a rock ‘em, sock ‘em classic!  Good fight anyway.  With the win Sigmon goes to 5 and 1 with 2KO’s.  Next up for Sigmon is a fight that he has wanted his whole career, an 8 Round showdown against South Carolina’s Toris “The Bull” Brewer 14 and 2, 6KO’s on April 11th at The Lynchburg Armory in Lynchburg, VA.

The opening bout of the night saw Akron, OH’s Dannon Svab 198 lbs., stop the debuting Duane Douglas Pittsburg, PA 227 lbs., with a big right hand about 30 seconds in to the fight.  Douglas couldn’t beat the count of ten.

The card was promoted by Major League Boxing.

Professional Boxing Returns To The Greater Charlottesville Area March 7th Featuring Fluvanna’s “WAR TIME” George Rivera!

Card Also features Waynesboro’s Robles, Bedford’s Sigmon, and Roanoke’s Norwood!

FluvannaPoster.JPG

Pro Boxing returns to the Greater Charlottesville area for the first time in 30 years on Saturday night March 7th, 2009 at The Fluvanna County High School Gym.  The Main Event will feature Fluvanna’s own “WAR TIME" George Rivera (9-4, 3KO's) taking on Billings, Montana’s Daniel “Magic” Gonzalez, a veteran of over 30 professional fights, in a junior middleweight (154 lb.) battle.  “It’s funny” joked Rivera, a graduate of Fluvanna County High School in Palmyra “when I went here I got kicked out a few times for fighting.  Now they are letting me back in to fight!”  Added Rivera, “I am very excited to be boxing in front of my hometown fans for the first time as a pro.  I hope everyone comes out and has a good time.  It’s going to be a heck of a show!”

Rivera ended 2008 by becoming the first (and still only) man to defeat Baltimore’s Jesse “THE BEAST” Nicklow.  Nicklow was 19 and 0 going in to his November 2008 bout with Rivera.  Rivera also became the first Virginia based boxer in over five years to compete in a featured nationally televised bout when he took on Philadelphia’s Latif Mundy in the Co-Main Event of  The Telefutura Network’s Solo Boxeo Series in May of 2008.  Rivera looks to build on a big 2008 with an impressive peformance in Fluvanna.  “I can’t wait for March 7th!  Everyone is excited about the show and I am going to do my best to deliver a knockout victory for the fans!  After that I am going to get my belt back, then it’s on to bigger and better things!”

In addition to Rivera, Waynesboro's "EL GUERRO" Juan Carlos Robles (11-2, 5KO's) will be taking on Winston Salem, NC’s Gary Lavendar (8-11, 6KO’s) in a cruiserweight (200 lb.) clash.  Robles defeated the highly respected Ed “Iron Man” Gutierrez in his last outing in January of this year at The Staunton Armory.  With this win Robles took a huge leap in the cruiserweight rankings and is now the 22nd ranked American cruiserweight according to BoxRec.com.

Bedford, VA’s Scott "CUJO" Sigmon (4-1, 1KO) will be taking on Virginia Beach Police Officer Frankie “The Freight Train” Filippone (2-0, 1KO) in a light heavyweight (175 lb.) battle.  Sigmon electrified the Staunton Armory in his most recent outing winning in a thrilling fight against Alex “SUPERMAN” Dill earlier this year.  “My goal is to detox the scum in boxing” says the smiling yet deadly serious Sigmon “and I’m going to do that one fight at a time!  I can’t wait for March 7th!”  Filippone is eager for the challenge and wants to keep his undefeated record intact.  "I've had a few fights fall out recently and I'm really looking forward to this one."

Rounding out the card will be Roanoke, VA’s Charles “Murdock” Norwood (3-3, 1KO) taking on Richmond’s Christian Brinkerhoff (7-2, 3KO’s) in a middleweight (160 lb.) bout.  Several other bouts are also scheduled.

Robles, Cujo Victorious In Staunton!

PLUS Staunton Boxing Club Amateur Results!

Waynesboro, VA's "El Guerro" Juan Carlos Robles improves to (11-2, 5KO's) with an impressive six round unanimous decision victory over Oakland, CA's Ed "The Iron Man" Gutierrez (15-7, 6KO's) in front of a capacity crowd at The Staunton Armory in Staunton, VA.  All three judges scored the bout 60-54.  Robles dominated the fight from bell to bell with an impressive arsenal that showed his hand speed, athleticism, power, and boxing ability.  "I think this is the smartest fight Juan has ever fought" says his Manager and Trainer Bruce Frank.  "This was a real guy in there with Juan and he's been in there with some of the best in the world in David Tua and Matt Godfrey and Juan dominated him.  That really says something!"

Bedford, VA's Scott "Cujo" Sigmon (4-1, 1KO) defeated Virginia Beach, VA's Alex "Superman" Dill (5-6, 2KO's) by way of a thrilling six round decision.  Cujo was a human windmall of non-stop punching and aggression against the talented Dill.  From the opening bell Sigmon jumped on Dill and rarely took a backwards step for the remainder of the fight.  Dill came to fight and he did not make it an easy night for Sigmon as he rocked the Bedford native with a big left hook in the middle rounds.  But coming down the stretch Sigmon's stamina and chin became the deciding factors as Sigmon swept the later rounds.  Sigmon also wobbled Dill badly in the 5th round with a huge uppercut.  But the determined Dill steadfastly refused to go down and remained on his feet for the duration of the bout.  After the bout, Sigmon grabbed the mic and addressed the capacity crowd, most of whom were there to see him perform, and thanked them for their support.  What's next for Cujo?  Stay tuned to MajorLeagueBoxing.com for details!

Charlottesville, VA's George "War Time" Rivera (9-4, 3KO's) was on the short side of a split decision against Wilson, NC's "Mean" Rodney Green (7-5, 2KO's) for Rivera's Mid-Atlantic Junior Middleweight Championship.  The extremely talented Rivera appeared a little bit off his form that saw him win a decisive victory over Baltimore's Jesse "The Beast" Nicklow in November of last year.  The judges scorecards confirmed that it was a fight that could have gone either way as one judge scored the bout 59-55 for Rivera, while the other two judges had it 58-56 and 58-55 for Green.  "I felt off tonight" said the dejected Rivera after the bout "but I thought I did enough to win the fight.  I hurt him in the first and last rounds and he really never hit me with any big shots.  I'll take some time to figure out what I'm going to do next."

In the first ever sanctioned ProAm boxing event in the state of Virginia's history Gator Boxing's Allen Kratz defeated The Staunton Boxing Club's Clay Davis by 3 round unanimous decision in a middleweight contest.  Laurel Boys and Girls Club Patrick Genova defeated The Staunton Boxing Club's Ash Poole in a light middleweight matchup.  The Staunton Boxing Club's Christian Steele defeated Team Norfolk's Eric Gibson.  Staunton Boxing Club boxer Tito Bryant lost a close decision to the Hagerstown Boxing Club's Cody Davis.  And The Staunton Boxing Club's 8 year old phenom "El Tigre" Kavon Robertson defeated 9 year old Chris Norville from The Laurel Boys and Girls Club.

BREAKING NEWS
January 31st Card To Feature Two Title Bouts!
PLUS:  The Staunton Boxing Club To Defend On Home Turf!

The January 31st show at the Staunton Armory has already garnered attention for its lineup of competitive fights.  But now two of those fights have a little something more at stake as titles will be on the line in the bouts featuring Thaddine "Swift Eagle" Johnson vs. Amy Iwasaki and "War Time" George Rivera vs. "Mean" Rodney Green.

Durango, Colorado's Thaddine "Swift Eagle" Johnson will be defending her Women's Professional Boxing Association Intercontinental Lightweight Title against New York, New York's (by way of Japan) Amy Iwasaki.  The Johnson-Iwasaki fight is the first ever female title fight in Virginia's boxing history.

In addition to the ladies' title bout, "War Time" George Rivera will be defending his Mid-Atlantic Junior Middleweight Boxing Title against "Mean" Rodney Green.  Rivera's most recent outing was a win over Baltimore's Jesse "The Beast" Nicklow, who was 19-0 going in to that bout and the reigning East Coast Champion.  Shortly after his win over Nicklow, Rivera was declared The Mid-Atlantic Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion and his fight with Rodney Green marks the first defense of that title.  "I'm glad to have a belt" says Rivera.  "It's not the only belt I'm going to get.  I eventually want to get that World Title, but this is a nice start.  I'm happy that I'm being recognized for my big win over Nicklow.  When he fought me the second time a lot of people assumed his belt was on the line but it wasn't.  I beat him and now I've been recognized as a champion!"  Added Rivera, "I've seen tapes of Rodney Green.  He is a good, solid professional fighter.  I have my work cut out for me but I'm looking forward to putting on a good show for my fans and come out with the victory."

In addition to the title bouts the show features 6 amateur boxing matches and 2 special attraction professional matches.  Scheduled to appear on the amateur portion of the card are:  Kevon "El Tigre" Edmonds, William "Tito" Bryant, Jennifer "Money" Barnes, Clay Davis, Christian Steele, and Ash Poole.

Kevon "El Tigre" Edmonds has been boxing since he was 5 years old and has already made several appearances at professional cards.  During the intermission of several of our past shows, Edmonds, now 8 years old, has wowed audiences with his incredible hand speed and combination punching in punch mitt demonstrations.  Edmonds will be competing against James Haynes, Jr. from 757 Boxing in Virginia Beach, VA.

Jennifer "Money" Barnes is a Mary Baldwin College student who is undefeated in her amateur boxing career.  She recently decided to forego a promising career as a basketball player in favor of the sweet science.  "I developed a passion for it.  I think about boxing all the time" says the smiling Barnes.  Barnes will be competing against an opponent from Kentucky.

William "Tito" Bryant recently moved to Staunton, VA from his native Puerto Rico.  Prior to setting foot in Bruce Frank's Staunton Boxing Club, "Tito" as he is affectionately called by those around the gym, had never laced up a boxing glove.  He has impressed those around him with his great balance, footwork, and work ethic.  Tito will be competing against an opponent from Gator Boxing in Roanoke.

Ash Poole is originally from England and is a boxer/puncher who is known for his incredible fitness, work ethic, and work rate.  A short and stocky southpaw, this Englishman fights like a left handed Joe Frazier with a right hook resembling Smoking Joe's left!  Poole will be competing against Troy Browning, Jr. from 757 Boxing in Virginia Beach.

Christian Steele has impressed onlookers in both the amateur and professional boxing ranks with his speed and athleticism.  "He already has a pro style" remarked several within the boxing game.  He has sparred with pros Andrew "The Doo Man" Farmer, "El Guerro" Juan Carlos Robles, Scott "Cujo" Sigmon, and George "War Time" Rivera.  One noted area boxing trainer, in particular, pegs Steele as one that will go far in the amateur and professional game.  Steele will be competing against Eric Gibson from Team Norfolk.

Clay Davis is a long and strong amateur who currently attends James Madison University in Harrisonburg.  Although new to the sport, Davis has picked up quickly on the finer nuances of the sweet science.  Known for his stiff jab and in your face stye, Davis plans to bring it on January 31st.   Davis will be competing against an opponet from Gator Boxing in Roanoke.

In addition to the Professional title bouts and the amateur bouts, the show features two special attraction matchups.  One of the evening's most highly anticipated bouts features a battle of the big boys in heavyweights "El Guerro" Juan Carlos Robles and Ed "The Iron Man" Gutierrez.  "I'm really looking forward to the challenge of Gutierrez" says Robles.  "He fought David Tua and Matt Godfrey and they are both big names in boxing.  This is a really big fight for me.  I'm glad I can count on the support of my hometown for such an important fight."  According to event organizers, "The Robles-Gutierrez matchup is the type of fight you would see on ESPN and we are bringing it to the intimate confines of The Staunton Armory.  Don't miss it!"

Rounding out the card is the highly anticipated light heavyweight battle between Scott "Cujo" Sigmon and Alex "Superman" Dill.  Sigmon has a reported 150 fans making the trip to Staunton from the Greater Lynchburg area to see his battle with Dill.  Cujo is known for his take no prisoners aggressive style.  "I'm going to come forward, I'm going to throw a lot of punches and sooner or later I'll catch Dill and knock him out!  They call this guy Superman but I've got the kryptonite right here baby!" says the charismatic Sigmon as he holds up his fists!

Tickets for The Staunton ProAm Boxing Classic start at only $25 for General Admission.  First Row seats are $55, Second Row seats are $45, and Third Row seats are $35.  All seats are $10 more at the door so please buy in advance!  Tickets are on sale at www.MajorLeagueBoxing.com or The Staunton Boxing Club located at 902 Jackson Street in Staunton, VA.

Waynesboro, VA's cruiserweight sensation "EL GUERRO" Juan Carlos Robles (10-2, 5KO's) will be taking on Oakland, CA's Ed "THE IRON MAN" Gutierrez (15-6, 6KO's) in one of the evening's featured bouts.  Robles, who is coming off an impressive knockout victory over Tommy Washington at the end of 2008, is looking to keep the momentum going with a win over the respected heavyweight Gutierrez.

Gutierrez most recent outing was a ten round loss against the third ranked cruiserweight in the world, Matt Godfrey (18-1, 10KO’s).  And although Gutierrez lost that bout he had some huge moments of his own and went the distance with the highly ranked fighter.  "I am in good shape right now" says the humble Gutierrez "but on January 31st I'll be just right for the fight with Robles."

Robles has been quoted as saying, "You can't get anywhere in boxing fighting chumps.  I want to test myself against the best and I want to be Champion of the World!"  He will get that test in Gutierrez, who in addition to Godfrey, has fought the likes of former heavyweight title challenger David Tua and current heavyweight prospects J.D. Chapman, Bermane Stiverne, and Derrick Rossy.  Look for the winner of the Robles-Gutierrez bout to make huge steps in 2009.

Charlottesville, VA's junior middleweight star "WAR TIME" George Rivera (9-3, 3KO's) will be tangling with Wilson, NC's "MEAN" Rodney Green (6-5, 2KO's) in another one of the evening's featured bouts.  Rivera ended 2008 with a bang by becoming the first man to defeat Baltimore's Jesse "THE BEAST" Nicklow, now 19 and 1, in November of last year.  "WAR TIME" plans on keeping his winning streak alive against the game Rodney Green.  Green, who is no stranger to fighting in Virginia, has won two out of the three times he has competed in The Old Dominion.

Rivera is looking to make a statement with Green and show the boxing world that he has what it takes to become a World Champ.  "I'm looking to go in there and take care of business on January 31st.  I want a lot of momentum going in to my fight in Fluvanna on March 7th.  I'm not looking past Rodney Green, I know it will be a tough fight, but I'm going to make some noise on January 31st and put on a great show!”

In the third featured bout of the evening Bedford, VA's own Scott "CUJO" Sigmon (3-1, 1KO) will be taking on Virginia Beach, VA's Alex "SUPERMAN" Dill (5-5, 2KO's) in a special attraction light heavyweight clash.  Sigmon is coming off a unanimous decision win over Baltimore's Billy Johnson at the end of 2008 and vows to be victorious over "SUPERMAN" Dill.  "If he's Superman then I've got The Kryptonite right here baby!", Sigmon says as he's holding up his fists during a recent sparring session.  "I'm knocking this guy out!"

Rounding out the card will be a special attraction female bout featuring Native American Thaddine "SWIFT EAGLE" Johnson (2-0, 2KO's) taking on the debuting Amie Iawaski.

Seating is very limited in the 400 seat Staunton Armory.  Don't be left out in the cold on the day of the fight!  Get your tickets today for The Staunton ProAm Boxing Classic at www.MajorLeagueBoxing.com or at The Staunton Boxing Club located at 902 Jackson Street in Staunton, VA.

WAR TIME GEORGE RIVERA DEFEATS NICKLOW!

RiveraVictorious2.JPG

Charlottesville, VA's "WAR TIME" George Rivera (9-3, 3KO's) became the first man to defeat Baltimore's Jesse "The Beast" Nicklow (19-1, 7KO's) by 8 round unanimous decison in Fairfax, VA.  Rivera used a fast, crisp jab and effective boxing skills to keep the strong and agressive Nicklow at bay for most of the fight.  Rivera used his here one second and gone the next style and displayed an arsenal of speed, athleticism, intelligence, and power which kept the game Nicklow a step behind for the entire fight.

RiveraVictorious22.JPG

Rivera dominated almost every round with the jab but he did have Nicklow hurt twice in the fight, once in the 4th and again in the 8th and final round.  Nicklow, to his credit, showed world class skill, determination, and ability but WAR TIME Rivera, who was accompanied to the ring by La Madre de La Familia, Ines Rivera, would not be denied on this night.  Expect big things from WAR TIME George Rivera in 2009!

Robles Featured On Washington, DC's ESPN980 Radio!

Special thanks must go out to the one and only Gary "Digital" Williams for giving me the heads up on this one.  The Washington Times story written by Thom Loverro caught the interest of Washington DC's ESPN 980 Radio and their afternoon drive time hosts Hall of Famer and Washington Redskin great John Riggins, Steve Czaban, and Andy Pollin.  They discussed The Washington Times article in depth which led to a segment on the toughest and/or craziest men in Pro Football.  Juan's toughness was mentioned alongside some of all time greats of the gridiron including Chuck Bednarik, Dick Butkus, Mike Curtis, Doug Atkins, and Conrad Dobler!  Digital Williams even called in to the show and told them a Juan Robles hunting story!  For those of you who know Juan, you know what I'm talking about!  For those of you who don't, let's just say he goes hiking for a week at a time in the dead of winter and he doesn't take any food with him!  And he doesn't take a gun either.  How does he do it?  We'll tell you that one later!  Thanks again Digital for the heads up and make sure you check out Digital William's incredible boxing blog for the latest and most extensive news in professional boxing in the DC, MD, VA, and Beltway area and beyond here:  www.BoxingAlongTheBeltway.Blogspot.com.   Also, check back to www.ESPN980.com for an archive of the radio broadcast featuring the segment on our own "El Guerro" Juan Carlos Robles!

Fairfax, VA --- One of the year’s most-highly anticipated Beltway bouts has been officially made and fight fans will see undefeated Jesse “The Beast” Nicklow (19-0-1) of Baltimore and Charlottesville’s George “War Time” Rivera (8-3, 3 KOs) slug it out again in an eight-round rematch on Saturday, November 1 at the Patriot Center.  Ice Promotions officials announced today that the Nicklow-Rivera bout will serve as the co-feature on its card featuring popular Northern Virginia headliner Jimmy Lange taking on Grover Wiley.

The junior middleweight fighters squared off on September 5 at Baltimore’s Du Burns Arena with Nicklow pulling out the unanimous eight-round decision, but not without controversy or last-minute efforts on the part of Rivera.  The Maryland native was seemingly well on his way to his 19th victory displaying effective punching power and knocking Rivera down in the fourth round.  However, Rivera became re-energized after being slugged by Nicklow after the referee advised both fighters to retreat to his respective corner before the start of the eighth round.  The controversial incident caused a stir among both camps and the crowd, which Rivera took full advantage of by charging forward and dropping Nicklow twice in the final round.  Nicklow was able to pull himself together and pull out the unanimous decision.

The 10,000 seat Patriot Center on a Jimmy Lange-headlined card provides an ideal location and stage for the warrior’s to come back and battle again.  Baltimore is just 55 miles north of the George Mason University campus, while Charlottesville is a short, two-hour trip northeast.

A mainstay in and around Baltimore over the past three years, this will be Nicklow’s first fight in Virginia and only second outside of Maryland (he fought in Washington, DC on May 25, 2007).  He trains out of Jake “The Snake” Smith’s Baltimore Boxing Gym.

Rivera has been a frequent fighter in Northern Virginia with his last local bout at the Jimmy Lange-sponsored Diego Corrales benefit held last October in McLean.  Originally from Spanish Harlem in New York and now fighting out of Staunton Boxing Club, Rivera is looking to get back on the winning track after winning nine of first with setbacks in his last two fights.

Hometown hero Lange returns from a 17-month layoff due to an injured shoulder to face veteran Wiley in the Main Event.  Two more local fighters, Jaime “The Punisher” Palma (13-12-1, 6 KOs) of Alexandria, Va., and Smithburg, Md.’s Dean “Pitt Bull” White (14-9-1, 3 KOs) will face off in an eight-round welterweight rematch.  Also on the card will be Fontaine Cabell (22-8-2, 17 KOs) taking on Chad Greenleaf (10-10-1, 4 KOs) in an eight-round bout.

Robles, Wilson, and Cujo Win Big In Maryland!
Waynesboro, VA's "El Guerro" Juan Carlos Robles (10-2, 5KO's) 197 lbs. used a two fisted attack from the opening bell to beat down the durable, and much bigger, Tommy Washington, Jr. (3-6, 2KO's) 216 lbs. en route to a 3rd round TKO.  Robles set a torrid pace from round 1 that had Washington on the defensive from the onset of the bout.  As Washington began to tire in round 2, Robles continued to batter away with 3 and 4 punch combinations that the heavyweight Washington was seldom used to seeing.  Robles punctuated round two with a tremendous left hook to the body which really took the wind out of Washington's sails.  As round three began, Robles pounced on Washington scoring with hard pinpoint shots throughout the round.  Robles again almost dropped Washington with a huge right hand that snapped the bigger man's head back in dramatic fashion.  Having had enough, Washington refused to come out of his corner for round 4.  Official time of the stoppage was 3:00 of the 3rd round.

toddwilsonversusdenby2.JPG

Arlington, VA's "White Lightning" Todd Wilson (5-0, 1KO) 140 lbs. proved that he is a prospect on the rise with a dominating performance over Felton, Delaware's Mike "Strictly Business" Denby (2-2-2, 2KO's).  As the first round was about to start Denby assumed a stalker's stance waiting for the bell to ring.  When the bell rang Denby attempted to pounce on Wilson who calmly and smoothly spun to his left and fired off a three punch combination followed by a 1, 2 with the left cross clearly hurting Denby leaving him stiff legged for several moments.  Wilson was all over Denby who refused to go down even though Wilson was hitting him with everything but the kitchen sink.  As round two began Wilson began boxing nicely, constantly moving in a circle and keeping the strong punching Denby just one step behind.  When Denby got close, the straight left hand from Wilson landed hard almost every time.  Rounds 3 through 6 were very similar to rounds 1 and 2.  A stalking and agressive Denby was negated by Wilson's effective boxer puncher style.  When Denby got close, Wilson tagged him with hard shots.  When Denby tried to trap Wilson in a corner, Wilson would skillfully spin out making Denby miss and then Wilson would make Denby pay with punches that were always thrown in combination.  Official scores were 59-55 across the board.

Beford, VA's Scott "Cujo" Sigmon improved to (3-1, 1KO) with an entertaining and exciting 4 round majority decision over Baltimore's Billy "The Kid" Johnson (3-3, 1KO).  Round 1 saw Billy The Kid come out with guns a' blazing as he caught Sigmon with a variety of jabs, hooks, and crosses many of which landed very hard.  Sigmon, to his credit, took all of those shots without flinching and fired back with left hooks and right crosses of his own which got Johnson's attention.  The first round went to Johnson.  As the second round started Johnson tried to repeat what he was doing in the first but now Johnson's blows seemed to have little effect on the man known as Cujo.  When Sigmon was in close he would dig rights and lefts to Johnson's body as Johnson was trying to take a rest.  It was now turning in to a brawl and that clearly was Sigmon's best chance to win the fight.  Round 3 saw Sigmon batter a tiring Johnson to the ropes.  A strong right cross, left hook combination by Cujo stunned Johnson which clearly gave Sigmon the round.  Round 4 saw Johnson attempt to get his breath but Sigmon refused to play Johnson's waiting game and pressed the fight.  Sigmon was always throwing something and it usually scored with effect on the tiring Johnson.  Round 4 was clearly Cujo's round.  Official scores saw it 39-37, 39-37, and inexplicably 38-38 for the man who just loves to fight, Bedford, VA's Scott "Cujo" Sigmon.

Other results on the show from the Millersville Sportsplex in Millersville, MD saw Maryland's Shelly Sievert defeat Georgia's Carinne Hamlett by 4 round split decision.  Maryland's Mark "TNT" Tucker scored a 4th round TKO over DC's Carlos "The Headbanger" Jones.  Maryland's Tony "Mo Better" Jeter scored a 4 round unanimous decision over South Carolina's tough Chris "The Killer" Cook.  The opening bout saw Maryland's Ikem "The Warrior" Orji tested, but clearly victorious, in a 4 round battle over Maryland's Raymondo Elliott.

Robles, Wilson, and Cujo Prepare To Take A Bite Out Of Maryland!

On Friday Night, September 19th in Millersville, Maryland several Virginia based prospects face off against tough opposition at The Millersville Sportsplex in an outstanding debut card brought to you by Maryland promotional outfit Better Promotions and Promoters Christen Cunningham, Tony Jeter, Don Meringer, and James Wilkins.

Waynesboro, VA's "El Guerro" Juan Carlos Robles (9-2, 4KO's) makes his Maryland debut as he tangles with the tough and durable Tommy  "TGUNZTHAGREAT" Washington, Jr. (3-5, 2KO's) in a 6 round clash of talented cruiserweights.  Washington, Jr., who hails from Michigan, has been asking to fight Robles for over a year now.  "I'm coming to whip his as*!"  says a confident Washington.  Robles, who was one of the 18 finalists for Season 4 of The Contender says, "I'm just ready to get back in the ring and show what I can do.  I don't disrespect anybody but I'm ready for anything dude's got."

Northern VA's "White Lightning" Todd Wilson ((4-0, 1KO) will be participating in his first 6 round bout as he takes on Delaware's Mike Denby (2-1-2, 2KO's).  These two fighters have a common opponent in West Virginia's Henry Goss.  Wilson defeated Goss by unanimous decision and Denby drew with Goss in their clash a year ago.  When asked his opinion about who would win the fight Goss said, "You know, I go back and forth.  One second I think Todd will win and the next time I think Denby will win.  I really don't know.  I think it's going to be close."  Wilson says, "I've been training hard, I expect a tough fight.  This is an important fight for me."  Look for the winner of this bout to take a huge stride towards contender status.  This 6 round clash has all the makings of a great one.

Bedford, VA's Scott "Cujo" Sigmon will be taking on Baltimore's Billy "The Kid" Johnson in a 4 round light heavyweight fight that is sure to please.  Billy "The Kid" hasn't fought in several years and has picked a rough customer in the Bedford, VA native known as Cujo to come back against.  "I'm ready for this guy," says Billy The Kid.  Cujo, who is known for his rough and tumble style says "I just love to fight.  It's in my blood.  I can't wait for Friday!"

Also on the card are Maryland's Mark "TNT" Tucker taking on DC's Carlos "The Headbanger" Jones.  Maryland's Tony "Mo Better" Jeter will be taking on South Carolina's Chris "Short Order" Cook.  Maryland's Shelly Sievert battles it out with Georgia's Carinne Hamlett.  And rounding out the show is a battle of Maryland lightweights in Ikem "The Warrior" Orji and Raymondo Elliott.

Tickets for this show start at only $35 and can be purchased HERE!  Don't miss this exciting night of professional boxing!  It's got all the makings of one of the great shows of the year!  We'll see you at the fights!

WAR TIME George Rivera On The Wrong End Of Controversial Decision!

There is an old adage in the world of professional boxing that when you take a fighter on the road he's got to knockout the hometown fighter to win a split decision.  On Friday September 5th Charlottesville, VA's "War Time" George Rivera went on the road to face Baltimore's undefeated Jesse "The Beast" Nicklow on his own turf for the East Coast Junior Middleweight Championship at Baltimore's DuBurns Arena.  In the eyes of many Rivera clearly knocked out Baltimore's Nicklow only to have Nicklow saved by a weird set of circumstances which included long counts, referee stoppages, and melees with security.

Round 1 saw Rivera use his long jab and fast hands to pick apart the agressive Nicklow and clearly take the round.  Round 2 featured more of the same from Rivera with jabs, crosses, and movement.  By the end of round 2 Nicklow, to his credit, closed the gap slightly and began working his way inside catching Rivera with a variety of power shots.  Round 3 saw Nicklow land a low blow which dropped Rivera to his knees and in extreme pain.  When Rivera rose the course of the fight changed from Rivera dominating from the outside to Nicklow dominating from the inside.  Nicklow walked straight to Rivera and unloaded a volley of hooks and uppercuts to a laboring Rivera from the 3rd round to the end of the 6th round.  Rounds 3 through 6 were all Nicklow and included a crushing left hook to the body which dropped Rivera for an 8 count.  Rivera was also penalized one point for holding in round 4.  At the end of round 6 and in to round 7 Rivera got his legs back and began firing off jabs and right hands at a distance from the ever advancing and aggressive Nicklow.  Rivera caught Nicklow with a crisp left hook to take the round.

As round 8 began the fighters were instructed to touch gloves and go back to their corners.  Rivera turned his back on Nicklow and went back to his corner.  Nicklow followed Rivera and hit him with a hard left hook.  Rivera advanced on Nicklow only to have the referee intervene with Nicklow taking a shot at Rivera over the referee who was situated between the two fighters.  Rivera fired back, the referee fell down, and security stormed the ring and inexplicably tackled only "War Time" Rivera.  The skirmish ignited a fire under Rivera, and with instructions from his corner that he had to go for the knockout and not to let the fight go to the scorecards, Rivera went for it.  Just seconds in to the opening of the 8th and final round Rivera caught Nicklow with a blistering left hook that dropped Nicklow to the canvas.  Nicklow rose on shaky legs only to have problems with his mouthpiece which was eventually washed and replaced by his corner at least 1 minute after he was initially knocked down.  Rivera swarmed all over Nicklow with hooks, crosses, and uppercuts but the durable Nicklow would not go down.  At one point the referee intervened and stopped the action with Rivera raising his arms thinking he was the victor by knockout.  But the fight was not over.  What was the referee's interference all about?  There was no standing 8 count in the fight and the referee's intervention should have been the signal that Rivera was the victor by knockout.  When the fight commenced, Rivera was all over Nicklow once again and this time Nicklow went down hard.  At the count of 7 a glassy eyed Nicklow rose to his feet and stumbled in to the ropes which held him up.  The referee grabbed Nicklow's gloves, pulling Nicklow upright, and wiped Nicklow's gloves on his shirt.  Again there was a mouthpiece issue which caused another delay that was at least 2 minutes in length.  Rivera jumped on Nicklow again but now Nicklow, aided by the referee's stoppages in between knockdowns, appeared to have his legs somewhat underneath him.  As the two fighters came together there was a clash of heads which left Rivera with a cut just below his hairline.  As Rivera was going for the finish the referee stopped the action and had the ringside physician examine the cut on Rivera's forehead.  Ringside observers heard the referee tell the doctor that the cut was caused by a punch, that the cut was bad, and that the doctor should stop the fight.  The doctor would not be swayed by the referee's suggestion.  In fact, it's supposed to work the other way around.  The doctor is supposed to tell the referee to stop the fight or let it continue, the referee isn't supposed to tell the doctor.  Also, the fight should have never been interrupted at the time because it once again robbed Rivera, who was all over Nicklow with punches that were seriously hurting Nicklow, of a chance to score a knockout victory.  When the action commenced both fighters traded until the final bell.  The unofficial Major League Boxing scorecard had the bout scored 74 to 74 a draw.  Take out the dubious point deduction given to Rivera in round 4 for holding and Rivera wins by one point 75 to 74.  The official scores read 75-73, 75-73, and 77-72 all for Nicklow by unanimous decision.

Boxing is a sport with a rich, colorful, and often times controversial history.  The Rivera-Nicklow fight showed us what was great and beautiful about the sport but also what is loathsome and detestable about it as well.  There is only one way to settle this controversy and that is within what is sometimes called the chamber of truth, the four corners of a boxing ring.  For the sake of boxing let's hope that in the rematch the chamber of truth contains only truth, not the lies that we saw on Friday night in Baltimore.

SRHS Alum Sigmon on Salem fight card

By Mike Forster

An eight-bout boxing card this Friday evening will feature some local talent, as Scott Sigmon will take to the ring in a light heavyweight bout.

Sigmon, a graduate of Staunton River High School, will go up against Daniel Shull in a fight on the undercard of the Andrew Farmer-Cesar Vega light welterweight fight.

This will be Sigmon’s third pro bout, having split his first two fights. Shull will be battling for the fifth time.

Additionally, Sigmon won the Golden Gloves state championship and the Virginia USA Boxing state championship in 2007 at the light heavyweight (179 pounds) classification.

Sigmon seemed thrilled to have earned the opportunity to fight in front of some locals. “It means more to me than the money,” said the 21-year old. “Even my great-grandma is coming out (to the fight). That means a lot.”

Sigmon still cares deeply for his Staunton River roots. “I want to help build a winning mentality,” he said of the school. “I want to show that you can still be a winner by salvaging failures of the past.”

The pugilist was a winner in his first professional bout, a fourth round technical knockout of Abdul Gilliard, in Fredericksburg.

In his next fight, he took on highly-regarded Farah Ennis, with few expecting Sigmon to leave the ring under his own power.

“Scott was matched against a very sharp fighter,” said co-trainer Maynard Quesenberry.

Despite losing a unanimous decision, Sigmon went the distance and was still going strong at the end. “I felt (Sigmon) won the last round,” said Quesenberry. “Scott took everything the guy could hit him with and kept coming.”

The fact that the bout was broadcast on HBO’s boxing live internet feed certainly gave Sigmon some positive publicity in the circles of the sweet science.

Getting to this point in his career was not easy for the 21-year old.

His time at Staunton River High School included getting into some trouble. After graduation, Sigmon found boxing to be an outlet for his aggressive nature.

The sport seems tailormade for him. “He’s as tough as they come,” said Quesenberry, who has been in the fight game for about 40 years. “He’s still learning but he is getting skilled. He’s in great shape and has a fighter’s heart.”

Sigmon is known for employing an orthodox fighting style. He takes a direct approach in the ring, coming right at his opponent with the goal of taking him out. He is not, however, a one punch fighter. “He just beats ’em and beats ’em,” noted Quesenberry. “Hopefully, they’ll fall.”

As a testament to his charge’s endurance, Quesenberry stated that Sigmon can easily spar for 20 rounds straight. “He’s like the Energizer Bunny,” said the trainer.

Well, it’s doubtful that the Energizer Bunny has a ring disposition as fierce as that of the Staunton River kid.

Sigmon, who also works at the Jamerson YMCA, acknowledges his ability to hang tough in a fight. “God just gave me an ability to endure,” he said.

He has had to endure outside of the ring as well as inside. A broken hand threatened to permanently sidetrack his aspirations. “I was broke and had to move back home,” he said. “It was terrible.”

The broken hand prevented him from boxing for eight months.

This Saturday’s eight-bout card starts at 7:30, at the Salem Civic Center.

Reserved seats are $25 and general admission is $15.

Other bouts include Jaywon Woods vs. Terry Roy (cruiserweight), Maurice Chalmers vs. Bayan Jargal (welterweight), David Novia vs. Dontre King (super middleweight), James Price vs. Nathan Petty (heavyweight), David Hopkins vs. Randolph Scott (light welterweight) and Dorin Spivey vs. Edward Anderson (light welterweight).

The match between Woods and Roy is especially intriguing, as both carry identical 7-0 records into it.

In the headliner, Farmer, of Front Royal, VA, brings his 10-1 record into the ring against Vega’s 10-14 mark. Vega is from Louisville, KY.

“It would mean a lot for the people of Bedford to come out,” said Sigmon.

Phildelphia Boxing Article By Ken Hissner on Robles and Rivera!

Boxing’s “The All-American Prizefighter” Rob Calloway (74-7-1, 58 KOs), of St. Joseph’s, Missouri, only strengthened his position as a cruiserweight contender in all 4 organizations with a sensational 9th round knockout at 3:05 of the round over previously unbeaten Juan Carlos Robles (9-1, 4 KOs), Waynesboro, Virginia, Saturday night with a packed house at the Day’s Inn, Allentown, Pennsylvania.

King’s Promotions, with Ty McNeill as matchmaker, put on a crowd pleasing show that had the fan’s screaming from the opening bout until the final one.  The fan’s included former WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, who is also trained by Marshall Kauffman, trainer of Calloway.  After the first round he went to the corner and offered his words of advice to “double up on the right hand.” What a right hand Calloway has.

Not to mention a rock hard left jab.  This was Calloway’s 12th straight win, 11 by knockout.  Only heavyweight Terry Smith (30-3-1) went the distance.

On the Monday prior to the fight this writer went to King’s Gym, in Reading, and saw a pretty sick Calloway slowly improving from a bad cold that kept him out of the gym the previous week.  It was quite obvious he had a breathing problem, but the show must go on.  Calloway, like his trainer, Kauffman, both are old school.  No excuses.

Robles, with a large following at ringside, all the way from Virginia, came to fight.  Considering he hadn’t gone beyond 6 rounds before, he was in the fight on an even basis for the first 4 rounds.  Kurt Wolfheimer of Fights News even had him ahead.

Calloway rocked Robles twice in the opening round with right hands hoping to make a short night of it considering his physical condition.  It seemed to bring out the best of Robles who came back with his own offense in the last 30 seconds of the round.  In the 2nd round Robles seemed to outhustle Calloway who later said “I never make excuses, but I was pacing myself through the first 4 rounds due to my breathing condition.”   Robles rocked Calloway with 10 seconds to go in the round.

In the 3rd round Calloway used his jab to control the round, always setting Robles up for the right hand as he kept moving to the right of his opponent.  In the 4th round Robles showed a good jab of his own causing Calloway’s nose to bleed.  The smell of blood only encouraged the Virginia biker who boasted having cut off his own finger with a wood chisel, Mohawk cut and ponytail made him look like something out of a warrior movie.  He was more than some club fighter, but a skilled one with limited fights.

In the 5th round, Calloway took over the fight rocking Robles with a straight right hand that had his opponent seriously dazed at the bell.  In the 6th round with encouragement from his corner Calloway went right hand crazy and had Robles on the receiving end throughout.  “I knew it was going to be a long night, the way this guy took a shot,” said Calloway.

In the 7th round with Robles still dangerous with a good left hook, Calloway simply outlanded him bringing blood from Robles nose.  In the 8th round Calloway came out with finish written all over his demeanor forcing Robles to the ropes throwing caution to the wind.  With approximately 5 seconds to go in the round Calloway hit Robles with a devastating right hand that put Robles down in Calloway’s own corner.  The referee Gary Rosato counted Robles out at 3:05 of the round.

It took about 15 minutes before Robles who was helped to the stool in Calloway’s corner was able to get to his feet.  “I couldn’t get away from his right hand,” said Robles.

A humble Calloway being thanked the crowd for adopting a fighter from St. Joseph, Missouri, and planned to bring his family east for a vacation.  “I would like to get a fight with WBA champion Firat Arslan who is planning on defending his title May 3rd in Germany,” said Calloway.  “I am 38 years old, with 82 fights, and feel this is my year for a title shot,” added Calloway.

A 4 round middleweight match had Charlottesville, Virginia’s George Rivera (8-1, 3 KO’s) a winner over late substitute Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor (12-14, 6 KOs), New Castle, Delaware, due to a very good left jab.  Judges Weisfeld and Gross had it 39-37 with LaRosa at 40-36.  Referee was Rosato.

JUAN CARLOS ROBLES VS. ROB CALLOWAY RECAP!

Robert Brizel, reporting ringside for the Boxrec .com

2008-03-15 : Rob Calloway beat Juan Carlos Robles by TKO in round 8 of 10

Location: Days Inn, Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA
Judge:
Robert Grasso
Judge: Dewey LaRosa
Judge: Steve Weisfeld

In an exciting main event that surprised the hometown Allentown crowd, unbeaten but unknown cruiserweight Juan Carlos Robles gave Rob Calloway all he could handle. With a hungry look in his eye that showed he came to fight, Robles proceeded to jab away and batter a calm Calloway through the first five rounds, giving Calloway a bloody nose and dominating the first half of the fight. For Robles, it was the chance of a lifetime against the aging 38 year old Calloway, who came into the bout with an eleven bout win streak and a world cruiserweight ranking.

However by the sixth round, Calloway started landing power shots, and Robles began to fade. Behind on points, Calloway, now 69-7-1 with 54 KO’s, played the part the part of one punch stalker. Near the end of round 8, Calloway landed a right hand bomb that sent Robles down and out through the ropes in Calloway's corner. Robles, now 9-1 with 4 KO’s, somehow beat the count, but was unable to continue even though the round appeared to have ended. The bout was stopped. Good decision. No quarrel from Robles, who recovered okay on Calloway's stool.

Ringside chatter was that the Calloway camp was now looking for a WBA cruiserweight title shot against Firat Arslan. This bout was the main event of a seven fight card presented by Marshall Kauffman Productions. It was a nice clean bout, with no fouls or holding throughout, with the referee's only action in over a half hour in the ring to stop the bout after Robles beat the count. Although Robles lost, he certainly comported himself like a world class fighter worthy of a much higher rating than Boxrec had indicated coming into this bout. Scheduled for ten, Calloway's Intercontinental title belt was not at stake. Former world heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman was present at ringside in a packed house at Days Inn Hotel Conference Center in Allentown in the most successful boxing card held in this venue in recent memory.

"WAR TIME" GEORGE RIVERA DEFEATS CLARENCE "SONNY BONO" TAYLOR!

Robert Brizel, reporting ringside for the Boxrec.com

2008-03-15 : George Rivera beat Clarence Taylor by UD in round 4 of 4

Location: Days Inn, Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA
Referee:
Gary Rosato
Judge: Robert Grasso 39-37
Judge:
Dewey LaRosa 40-36
Judge:
Steve Weisfeld 39-37

Middleweight George Rivera from Virginia, now 8-1 with 3 kos, won a found round decision over late substitute Clarence 'Sonny Bono' Taylor of Delaware, now 12-14-2 with 3 KO's. Taylor was a late sub for Pennsylvania fighter Keenan Collins.

Rivera was the busier of the two fighters and clearly deserved the decision. Taylor landed some good shots, though, and spent most of the bout holding and frustrating his opponent. Taylor appeared to be holding back, and might have been a better fighter than his performance.

MARCH 15TH THE RETURN OF ROBLES!  JUAN CARLOS ROBLES TO FIGHT ROB CALLOWAY!

Waynesboro, VA's own Juan Carlos Robles (9-0, 4KO's) returns to the ring on Saturday March 15th against world ranked Rob "The All American Prizefighter" Calloway (67-7-1, 53KO's).   The bout will take place in Allentown, Pennsylvania and will be contested over ten rounds in the cruiserweight division.  Calloway, ranked #14 by the WBA, #11 by the WBO, #18 by the WBC, and #15 by the IBF, represents the biggest fight of Robles' young career.  "We like the fight with Calloway and we will take full advantage of this opportunity" says Joe Hensley, Juan Robles' Promoter.  "Rob Calloway is a good fighter with a lot of experience.  He's a tough guy.  But he's got something that we want and that's a world ranking and he's in our way.  Juan is in the best shape of his life, he's strong as a bull, he's smart, and he's as hungry as any fighter in the game today.  Bruce Frank will have Juan in shape to go 20 rounds and he will devise a game plan to defeat this dangerous opponent.  Juan is going to win on March 15th and then he will be one step closer towards his goal of winning a World Title!"

There has been a recent trend of fighters with seemingly limited ring time tangling with more experienced foes.  Most recently cruiserweight Eric Fields at 10 and 0 took on former World Champion Kelvin Davis, a 30+ fight veteran.  Alexander Povetkin, now 15 and 0 and the #1 Contender for the Heavyweight Title, has been taking on experienced foes since the start of his career.  Other fighters that are on the fast track to a title are heavyweight Odlanier Solis (6-0, 4KO's) and junior welterweight Devon Alexander (14-0, 8KO's).  Solis turned pro against a fighter 32 and 7 and Alexander recently defeated former World Champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley in just his 14th pro fight.

Like these other future World Champions, Juan Robles has been tangling with veterans since the beginning of his career.  He fought Derek Amos, a 40+ fight veteran in just his 4th fight (and later his 6th).  Juan also fought Danny Sheehan, James Johnson, and Lenzie Morgan, veterans of 47, 52, and 48 fights respectively.  "If you can fight, you can fight.  And Juan's got what it takes to go all the way!" says Hensley.  "We are really looking forward to March 15th!"

In a classic crossroads battle, the young lion Juan Carlos Robles battles the dangerous and experienced veteran Rob Calloway on Saturday March 15th in Allentown, PA.  Tickets for this Mega-Event will be sold through this website!  More to come in future posts.  Stay tuned to www.MajorLeagueBoxing.com for details!

WAR TIME GEORGE RIVERA ROLLS IN SPRINGFIELD!

IT'S NOW 4 WINS FOR RIVERA AS "WAR TIME" SHOWS ANOTHER OPPONENT WHAT TIME IT IS!

Charlottesville, VA's prospect "War Time" George Rivera continued his ascent up the junior middleweight ladder in impressive fashion winning a 4 round unanimous decision over the previously undefeated Lawrence Jones in Springfield, VA.  Official scores were 40 to 36 (twice) and 39 to 37.  There were no knockdowns in the bout.  The quality win raises Rivera's record to 4-1 (2KO's) while Washington, DC's Lawrence Jones is dealt his first loss and now goes to 2-1 (1KO).

The southpaw Jones tried to establish his jab in the first two rounds of the bout but found Rivera an elusive target.  Jones began lunging with his punches and a measured Rivera took advantage of Jones' reaching by countering with lead straight right hands and hooks to the body.  In the 3rd and 4th rounds, Rivera set the pace and began letting his punches go more freely.  Jones attempted to cover up but many of Rivera's punches got through his guard.  And when Jones attempted to fire back, Rivera used a nice combination of head and lateral movement to avoid Jones' attack.  "I broke my southpaw jinx" said Rivera after the fight.

Both fighters had a large contingent of fans with chants of "WAR TIME, WAR TIME!" coming from George's army of supporters La Famila, who made the trip from Charlottesville to see their man.  The classy Jones appeared to be distraught after the bout but he is a talented fighter and has nothing to be ashamed of in his performance.

What's next for Rivera?  "War Time" will be fighting on October 6th at The McLean Hilton in McLean, VA.  Also appearing on this card will be the return of "JC Superstar" Juan Carlos Robles.  Look for details on this card in the very near future!

R.I.P. Robles’ Pinky!

Undefeated cruiserweight prospect “JC Superstar” Juan Carlos Robles is known as a really tough guy.  He was a multi-time, multi-state tough man champion, he’s held the extremely  dangerous job of being an underwater welder, he’s driven his motorcycle cross-country (as well as to the ring), and he’s an undefeated professional boxer.  But, as you will see, there’s tough and then there’s TOUGH!  As reported several months ago, Juan was involved in a motorcycle accident in which he broke his forearm and injured his knee.  He also damaged his right pinky finger.  In the months following the mishap, it became apparent that the damaged pinky would slow an otherwise speedy recovery.  So Juan did what does not come as a surprise to those who know him well.  He took the finger off himself!  “He didn’t have a doctor do it, he didn’t have any pain medication, no Advil, nothing like that” said Bruce Frank, Juan’s Manager and Trainer.  “He found out from the doctor how they would do it and he did it himself.  He put his finger on a sharp blade and he hit it with a big block.  The finger came off with one clean shot.  He did it yesterday and was back in the gym today.”  Juan’s wife Ginnie bandaged the wound and took him to the emergency room where the doctor remarked that Juan did a good job with the amputation.  After a couple of minor adjustments they dressed the wound and gave him antibiotics to stave off any infection.  When asked how it felt, Robles said, “It hurt a little, but no big deal.  Nothing I couldn’t handle.  I may be missing a pinky, but I still have the whole fist.  That’s all I need.”  WOW!  Look for “JC Superstar” Juan Carlos Robles to return to the ring, sans pinky, in September or October of this year.  As amazing as this story is you’re probably saying to yourself there’s just no way that this could be done.  Well, guess what?  Juan made a video of the actual amputation! Look for it on this very website in about a week!

"WAR TIME" GEORGE RIVERA RETURNS AUGUST 25TH!

Charlottesville, VA's "War Time" George Rivera (3-1, 2KO's) returns to the ring on Saturday August 25th in Springfield, VA as he takes on undefeated junior middleweight Lawrence Jones (2-0, 1KO) at the Robert E. Lee High School Gymnasium.  Rivera expects to make a big statement in his fight with the undefeated Jones.  "Step by step, we will bring a belt to VA" said the charismatic Rivera after one of his recent victories.  Jones represents a "step up" in class for Rivera and the undefeated southpaw is highly regarded in some local boxing circles.  Rivera is expected to be in the best shape of his life and is training under the watchful eye of the Staunton Boxing Club's erstwhile keeper of the flame, Bruce Frank, who also manages Rivera.  Undefeated cruiserweight sensation, "JC Superstar" Juan Carlos Robles, who is recovering nicely from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, is expected to make a guest appearance on fight night and will once again work the corner of his stable mate, Rivera.  Rounding out Team Rivera is longtime Staunton Boxing Club  trainer, Philadelphia's own "Gunboat" Art Leneghan, Promoter Joe Hensley, and of course, "LA FAMILIA" -- the most energetic and enthusiastic boxing fans on the scene today!  "LA FAMILIA's" team captain is none other than "EL CAPITAN" himself, Darryl Rivera, the brother of "War Time" George Rivera.  Tickets to see one of the hottest junior middleweights in the game today, George Rivera, start at only $35 and can be purchased at The Staunton Boxing Club.  For more information, please sign up for our mailing list, or call The Staunton Boxing Club at (540) 294-2117.  Thanks for your support and we'll see you on August 25th!

Robles Injured In Motorcycle Accident! June 23rd Fight With Bailey Off, Card Cancelled

"JC Superstar" Juan Carlos Robles was injured in a motorcyle accident on Saturday May 12th.  Robles wrecked his motorcylce at approximately 8AM after hitting a wet spot in the road near his home in Waynesoboro, VA.  He broke his right forearm and shattered his kneecap during the accident.  After a successful operation, Robles is recuperating at home.  His June 23rd battle with William "The Storm" Bailey for the Virginia State Cruiserweight Title is now off and the entire June 23rd card to be held at The Fredericksburg Fieldhouse has been cancelled.  He is expected to make a full recovery according to his Manager, Bruce Frank.  Our thoughts are with you Juan.  Get well soon!
