Listed below is a brief history of the major battles and actions the 1st Irish participated in during the years 1862-1865

BATTLE OF STONES RIVER
31st December 1862 - 2nd January 1863
 
 
Union objective: Force General Bragg out of Murfreesboro, TN
Confederat objective: Defend Murfreesboro at all costs
 
Union Commander: Gen. Rosecrans (43,400 effective troops)
Confederate Commader: Gen. Bragg (46,600 Effective troops)
 
35th IVI Commanded by Colonel Bernard F. Mullen
3rd Brigade (Price), Van Cleve's Division (Beatty), Crittenden's Corps
 
35th IVI Action:
-- Crossed Stone's River on Union left, first light Dec. 31
-- recrossed river when Confederate atack threatened to overrun Union right
-- remained on Union left west of river on Dec. 31
-- repelled Confederate cavalry attack
-- crossed Stone's River again on Jan. 1
-- skirmished all day, night Jan. 1
-- Confederates attacked afternoon of Jan. 2  (Breckinridge Orphan Brigade)
-- Held for 43 minutes before withdrawing across river again
-- massed artillery attack (58 guns) broke up Confederate attack
 
35th Losses: 27 killed, 78 wounded (5 mortally), 31 missing
 
 
BATTLE OF CHICKAMAUGA
September 19, 20, 1863
 
Union Commander: Gen. Rosecrans
Confederate Commander: Gen Bragg
 
35th Officer commanding: Major John Dufficy
3rd Brigade (Barnes), Van Cleve's Division, Crittenden's Corps
 
35th Indiana Infantry Actions:
-- Guarding Lee and Gordon's Mill at extreme right of Union army Sept. 16-18
-- shifted to left during day long fighting September 19
-- rejoined division overnight
-- moved up to support Wood's division at 8 am on September 20
-- confused fighting all day
-- positioned behind hole in Union line when Wood shifted to support Thomas
-- Longstreet attacked through the hole in Union line, crushed Union right
-- retired under fire, returned to Chattanooga, TN
 
35th Indiana losses: 8 killed, 24 wounded, 37 missing.
 
 
BATTLE OF LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN AND MISSION RIDGE
November 23-25, 1863
 
35th Indiana Commanded by: Colonel Bernard F. Mullen
2nd Brigade (Whittaker), 2nd Division (Geary), Twelfth Corps (Hooker)
 
35th Indiana Action:
-- Opening of "Cracker Line"
-- Advance from Brown's Ferry, cross Lookout creek on Nov. 24
-- charge up Lookout Mountain taking breastworks without firing a shot
-- Fighting around Craven House on slopes of Lookout Mountain
-- Confederates driven from Lookout Mt.
-- Attack on Confederate Left flank on Mission Ridge
-- November 25, advanced to Rossville in pursuit of Bragg
 
35th Losses in this action: 2 Mortally wounded
 
BATTLE OF KENESAW MOUNTAIN
June 18, 1864

35th Indiana Commanded by: Major John Dufficey
2nd brigade (Whittaker), 1st Division, IV Army Corps
 
35th actions:
-- May - June engaged in heavy skirmishing pressing Confederates
-- In front of Kennesaw Mt.
-- 11 o'clock, Confederates take advantage of pre-withdraw of the 35th position
-- 35th ordered to retake positions.  Hand to hand fighting for over 30 minutes. Major Dufficy killed
-- 35th retakes position with help from 51st, 99th Ohio, 96th Illinois
-- Confederates retire back to Kennesaw
 
35th Losses from May 3rd - June 30, 1864
14 Killed, 52 wounded, 8 missing
 
 
BATTLE OF FRANKLIN
November 30th, 1864

2nd Brigade (Whittaker), 1st Division (Kimball), IV Army Corps
 
35th Indiana Actions:
-- rearguard action during movement from Spring Hill to Columbia to Franklin
-- occupied right flank of trenches in defense of Franklin
-- saw little action besides artillery attacks
-- withdrew around midnight to the works defending Nashville
 
35th losses: 2 killed, 2 mortally wounded
