College Creek History

After some exploratory late winter and spring hawkwatching at several sites around Williamsburg during the 1990's, a regular stream of migrating hawks and other birds was found to cross the James River, from Hog Island Wildlife Management Area in Surry County to the place on the north shore where College Creek empties into the James River in James City County. There are a number of articles in the Virginia Society of Ornithology's journal, THE RAVEN, about the site. Annual hawkwatching, staffed with volunteers, began in 1997. The site is operated by Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory and normally runs from mid-February through May. Flights are generally from mid-morning to early afternoon, as birds cross on the warming air.
