Alpacas are members of the Camelid family and were bred by ancient Incans to make garments for the Royal family. Today
their ancestors are being raised on our ranch, living a comfortable, somewhat spoiled lifestyle.
We
breed our female Alpacas in the fall, and 11.5 months later their cria are born. Two weeks after giving birth, they are re-bred.
Alpacas have one baby at a time and nurse them for six to eight months.
Alpaca fiber is very soft.
It ranges somewhere between wool and cashmere, leaning more towards cashmere. We shear our Alpacas in June each year. We then
sort and skirt all our fleeces. Some are saved for show, others are available for purchase. Some goes to a local mill for
processing into batting, roving and yarn. But the bulk of it we process into yarn, all by hand. Most of our product line
is made from Alpaca and you will find that under the Product line link.
