Black Me

[WRITER'S NOTES]
This is another one of Raven's earlier songs, written before Tyler joined the effort. The lyrics were adapted from one of Raven's poems. This was probably the very first song she ever attempted writing, based on a fellow musician's suggestion. It turned out to be too difficult to adapt to that musician's songwriting method, and Raven had to take the time to figure out her own songwriting methodology. This is the end result. This is a single track, live recording.

Black Me
[lyrics]
The Color Black was born to me.
I claim it as my own true self –
if, a color I may be...yeah
While others may be brighter hued
like those who glow in shades of red,
or vivid shades of green and Blue
... ain’t nothin’ true ‘bout ya, Darlin’…

It’s quite all right, I’m happy here.
I’m better than the way you left me, Dear.
At first I thought I’d miss you gone…
but I took your hint
and I’m moving on without You...
Can’t cry the blues ‘bout ya, Darlin’…
You didn’t love me good enough,
now it’s too late …

This Color Black was born to me,
a dreaming space, a soul set free.
I claim it as my own true self –
if, a color I may be
My Black is not of melancholy,
nor a burden thrust upon me.
Here in my Black, I dare to speak
and the truth has rescued me
Yeah the truth has set me free

Here, in this Black, I dare to dream
of coal-dark eyes and lover’s songs,
Shimmering stars in falling flight,
or twilit skies before the morning light.
There’s lots of fish out in this sea,
so happy baby that you set me free.
You’ll never find another me,
but I’ve learned that some things
are not meant to be.

Don’t you think I’ll shed a tear
cause here in my Black,
it’s very clear now.
Somethings ain’t worth holding on,
Now I know you’re not the one, yeah-
You’re gonna be so sorry-
it’s gonna get ya, Honey -
just wait ‘n see …

This Color Black was born to me,
a dreaming space, a soul set free.
I claim it as my own true self –
if, a color I may be
My Black is not of melancholy,
nor a burden thrust upon me.
Here in my Black, I dare to speak
and the truth has rescued me
This Color Black has set me free,
from these Blues
you tried to lay upon me.
I claim it as my own true self –
if, a color – a color I may be.
