Sometimes our map scans do not come out quite good enough. They can be used, but could use some minor improvement. I will show you some easy ways to fix these scans using software you may already have. These fixes only take a few minutes and can be done by anyone with very little effort or experience.
For my example I will use Adobe Photoshop LE, But you can also use Photoshop Elements, Paint shop Pro or Irfanview.
Step One -- Adjust Levels
On the menu Click "Image--Adjust--Levels" Move the sliders and adjust the image to your taste. Play around and see what looks the best. Make sure "Preview" is checked so you can see your changes. I like the maps to usually be a little darker. Click "OK" to make the change or "Cancel" to not.
You could also use "Image--Adjust--Auto Levels"
Step Two -- Unsharpen Mask or Filter
On the menu click "Filter--Sharpen--Unsharpen Mask" In the dialog, play around with the "Amount" setting. Make sure "Preview" is checked so you can see your changes. Do not overdo it. When you are happy, click "Ok". Here unsharpen actually sharpens the image, don't ask me why.
Usually these two adjustments are enough, but you could also adjust the Color Balance, Curves and the Brightness/Contrast.
There you did it, simple wasn't it. I hope this helped you and gave you a quick intro to image adjustment. Take Care!!
