Chad Payette
On Friday May 5th, 2006 seventeen year old Chad Payette of Raymond, NH had his life change in
an instant when he suffered a tragic trampoline accident resulting in permanent paralysis in both legs and partial paralysis
in both arms. Chad is a Raymond High School student who enjoyed the carpentry trade and hoped to pursue it when he graduated.
Prior to his accident he played Varsity Soccer and enjoyed spending time with his friends and girlfriend. Chad also liked
watching the Red Sox, ice hockey and watching his brother Robbie race at Star Speedway (in Epping) and Hudson Speedway.
Chad was also an employee at Hannaford in Raymond.
On the day of his accident, The 911 response team transported Chad to Exeter Hospital where he was
immediately airlifted to Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Our family was told the results of
the accident conclude extensive irreparable damage to the C4/C5 Vertebrae and have classified Chad as an incomplete spinal
cord injury.
Prior to the accident, Chad and his family lived in a mobile home that needed complete renovation,
contractors assessed and concluded the home needed to be rebuilt for structural safety reasons. People were absolutely
unbelievable; many families, contractors, and businesses have all pitched in and offered resources of all kinds
to build Chad and his family a home that would be suitable for his needs. Thanks to the Raymond and surrounding communities,
Chad is now in a new home that enables him to have the adequate space and surroundings necessary to give him as
much independence as possible. The Payette's were also fortunate enough through community efforts to obtain the handicapped
accessible transportation that is necessary to transport Chad to his physical and occupational therapy as well as his
daily activities.
This will however continue to be a challenging time of both financial and physical adjustment for Chad
and his family. Although Chad's dad has been able to return full time to work; Chad's mom, Ellen Payette has
been able to only return as a part time employee so she still has the flexibility to take Chad to necessary appointments.
Knowing the changes the Payette's have to face both emotionally and financially, they will need the
continued support from their family, friends and community. There are many medical expenses that health insurance does
not cover. According to the United Spinal Association, the average yearly expenses for a SCI patient with an injury such as Chad's are between
$50,110 - $122,334 annually. The average lifetime cost can range from: $964,608 - $1,585,906. These figures do not include
any indirect costs such as daily expenses and loss in wages due to work limitations.
If you wish to make a tax deductable donation to Chad's fund you may do so to the National Transplant Assistance Fund, in Honor of Chad Payette.
On Behalf of the Payettes and their family,
Thank You
