WHICH COMPUTERS MAY I USE?
The first two computers near the entrance are exclusively for the
online electronic catalog. The library’s holdings are accessed by
clicking the “Online Catalog” icon. InfoCentre is our online
patron access catalog or OPAC which lists library books and audiovisual materials and includes thousands of selected
web sites through WebPath Express.
The library’s last eight computers are for student research
but may be used for homework preparation only if the computers are not being used for research and assigned educational
activities.
PRIORITIES FOR COMPUTER USE
The following uses of computers take precedence over casual use.
1st
Student research – examples: catalog and database searches, and Internet use for classroom assignments
2nd Seniors using college programs or researching colleges
3rd High school student typing specially arranged projects
-
examples: yearbook, literary magazine, student council
4th Middle school student computer studies
and assigned practice with software - examples: Scratch, rocketry, or
teacher-assigned computer work
HOMEWORK may be typed on library computers if the librarians give
permission and no other students need computers for Internet research.
IMPORTANT:
Students must notify the librarians or Father Matthew when they are
accessing the Internet. Middle School students must be prepared to explain what
information they need and their research plan.
Web sites visited by students are monitored. Computer use in the library is a privilege and may be revoked at any time by librarians and form masters.
It is a student’s responsibility to visit appropriate web sites
on the Internet and display high-quality, educational information and images on the screen at all times.
*No student email may be sent or received without
permission from the librarians. Students must request using email programs; at
this time student email activity is not permitted freely on campus.
*No games are allowed to be accessed from library computers.
OTHER INFORMATION
Help and Logging In or Out
Ask for help anytime, especially if a computer is not functioning
normally. The login for the CPS network may be incorrect. Students may
not log off or log out in the library.
Do Not Change Screens
Do not customize or change the screens in any way. Students will not knowingly disrupt computer service to others or tamper with hardware or software. Students should have an interest in maintaining the computers exactly as they find
them for the convenience of all.
Close Your Personal Documents and Save Your Work on USB Flash Drives
Close your documents and applications. Don’t leave your
document open on the screen. If you save a document to the hard drive, it may be deleted by the librarian later in the day. Students should purchase and use flash drives, personal storage devices like USB memory sticks/keys.
Print FIVE pages free!
Five free printouts are allowed daily. A student must check with the librarian if he is printing a document longer than five pages. Five cents per page is charged beginning with the sixth print.
What if the printer doesn’t work?
Be patient when printing a document because all library computers
access one printer. If your document does not print in a reasonable amount of
time, do not try to print it a second time until you check with the librarian.
