First Hummer of the Season
This morning I observed an adult male Ruby-throat feeding at a firebush in my backyard. He's the first hummer I've seen in the yard in over a month. I did not see him visit a feeder.

Fall Migration Begins
Recent reports of new hummingbirds in Florida indicates that migration has begun. Or, at least post-breeding dispersal is occurring. I usually begin seeing new birds in late June to early July. The first birds are usually young birds that may be from post-breeding dispersal. The first adult males usually are seen by mid-July. It's usually much later before I usually see my first adult female. The female Rufous has returned in the second week of August the past two years.

So, it's time to clean the feeders and get ready for their return.
