On Saturday September 27th, we tried to catch the Rufous in order to confirm her identity by the number on her band.
Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful. We did get three birds in cages but they were all Ruby-throateds. I've got a couple of
better trainer cages and will attempt to make more in hopes of improving our odds the next time. Seeing three birds in the
cage in September was still encouraging when looking ahead to future banding opportunities outside of January.
It's shaping up to look like a typical winter in the yard. I have at least 5 Ruby-throateds and the female Rufous in
the yard. I'm currently maintaining 11 feeders. A few of them may be unnecessary when there aren't any new birds but once
they're up, it's hard to take them down. You never know when they'll be need. And by whom.
Not a lot of songbirds to report. I've had a few days of multiple birds but not a lot. Then again, I haven't had much
time to watch yard during peak times. A few of the birds I have seen in the yard this year are Rose-breasted Grosbeak,
indigo Bunting, Swainson's and Gray-cheeked Thrush, House Finch, and Tennessee, Blackburnian, Prairie, and Palm Warblers.
