Quotes from your PWCS leaders:
"Absent any evidence it's not working, we should continue [with the program] and get the evidence that it is working,"
said Don Richardson, Gainesville District (Potomac News 27 Dec 07).
- PWCS "Investigations-trained" 1st and 2nd graders tested in 2007 using
Stanford Diagnostic Math Test scored only 44th and 45th percentile in computational skills NATIONALLY!! No score was
above the 54th percentile...average at best and dismal for the northern VA region...the math does not add up!
"We have a multi-million dollar investment in this already," [Superinendent] Walts said. If it was a disaster,
[tests] would show that." (Potomac News 27 Dec 07).
- millions of your tax dollars on the least adequate elementary math program in
Virginia. PWCS elementary math scores under traditional mathematics prior to "Investigations"
were exceptionally good; Stanford Test results under "Investigations" are not.
"Basic math facts are still taught," said Carol Knight, math supervisor for the county's schools, who gave a detailed
historical and background account of the program to board members, "but they're just not taught by memorization." (Potomac
News 27 Dec 07)
- ??? And next year will PWCS teach children the basics of the alphabet...only not
by memorization? Investigations curriculum does not promote mastery in mathematics.
PWCS Program Evaluation Team at a 19 December Board Meeting, "...Measuring the success of the math program is cloudy,
a bit like comparing apples to oranges." (Potomac News 27 Dec 07)
- Measurement is a mathematical concept weakly taught in Investigations; perhaps that
is why it's "cloudy" to PWCS...
