Unix, the OS for Those Who Want the Computer to do the Work
| "Two
of the most famous products of Berkeley are LSD and Unix. I don't
think that is a coincidence."

"Ken
Thompson has an automobile which he helped design. Unlike most
automobiles, it has neither a speedometer, nor a gas gauge, nor any of the
other numerous idiot lights which plague the modern driver. Rather,
if the driver makes a mistake, a giant "?" lights up in the
center of the dashboard. "The experienced driver," says
Thompson, "will usually know what's wrong."

Welcome. If you are a Unix I student, you are at the beginning of a wonderful journey into the world of Unix. If you are taking Unix II, you've already learned of the wonders of the Unix OS and are now preparing to learn how to make it really work for you. If you are taking System Administration, look out! It's going to be a wild semester! In any case, I'm looking forward to a fun and challenging semester. If you need a terminal emulator or need to practice with the Unix editor, free software is available for you to download.
Class Materials
I've set up different pages, one for each class. Follow the appropriate link to get the lecture slides, syllabus, scripting standards, and any other goodies appropriate to your class.
ITSC1458 Unix System Administration
SSH Secure Shell Client is a secure terminal emulator for MS Windows from SSH Communications that you will find useful when connecting to clyde from home via your internet service provider. It is free for non-commercial and academic use and is very easy to install. Simply download the file SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe and double click on it to install it. If you would like to check the licensing for this software, you can also click on the LICENSE file and read what it has to say. If you have trouble downloading the file, right click the program name and select "Save Link As..." if you are using Netscape. If you are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer, right click on the link and select "Save Target As..." SSH Secure Shell Client uses the secure shell protocol to encrypt all communication between you and the North Lake computers. If you are behind a firewall, it will have to be configured to pass port 22 communications in order for SSH Secure Shell Client to work.
By the time we get midway through Unix I, proficiency with vi, a Unix editor, will be critical to your overall success. There is no way to build proficiency other than through practice. elvis is a vi clone that will run in a DOS window on a Windows machine. It will let you practice your vi skills without having to connect to clyde. This is also free software for your use that is contained in a self-extracting archive. Download it, as described above for SSH Secure Shell Client and double click it to extract. There is no other installation required.
If you are in Unix II, it is assumed that you are already proficient with vi. If not, I strongly recommend you download elvis and practice. You will NOT have time to wrestle with learning an editor in Unix II.
www.thomer.com/thomer/vi/vi.html has a large quantity of information and links to other information sources for vi, including several tutorials. If you need to brush up your skills or are just having trouble learning vi, check it out. It may have just what you need.
Other Information Sources
CRISP (the College Resource and Instructor Support Program) also contains a significant amount of learning resources you may find of use during Unix I and II. Feel free to visit and explore.
Here is some information on my professional and educational background.
