Views from Hagerstown

Things I think I think after this weekend...

  • The MetroDawgs are still the class of 9-man in this region.  They have a dominant DL, and one of the most solid OL in the game.  And with a veteran QB, they make the plays when they count.
  • The Blaze may be the up and coming team in 9-man.  They are taking one more shot at the 8-man title in Orlando, and will be joining the 9-man wars, according to their coaches.  Their defensive line may have been the class of the tournament, and they had athletes on both sides of the ball.  They played the final with about 16 players, but they fought their tails off.
  • The Packers had the ball on an early possession at the MetroDawgs 1 yard line.  Two runs, a false start, an incomplete pass and a field goal later, all momentum was gone.  Less than five plays later, the MetroDawgs were racing for a 50+ yard touchdown, and the game was over.  You could see it in the players' demeanor.
  • Hood will run the ball down your throat, but none of their pass plays seem to have timing to them.  It's hard to tell how good their receiving corps is when everything looks like a busted play.  But they play physically, and they can intimidate.  I wonder if they lose some of their football sense when they get talking.
  • The Raiders have more weapons than most teams.  Being short on the lines hurt them this weekend, but the additions from Team Jordan give them more weapons than they've had in previous tournaments.
  • The Red Knights have an interesting base, with a ton of speed.  They played Hood and the Blaze tough, and have a strong core to build on.  It will be interesting what roster additions they will have for future tourneys.
  • Miller Lite and Crazy Horse both bounced back from 0-2 Saturdays to win their first game on Sunday.  It's a huge advantage for home teams at the tournaments to be able to add the pieces to replace injured teammates.
  • The Bengals and Trojans both won close games on Saturday.   The Bengals were short on skill position players, and the Trojans struggled to score.  Both have issues to address in the offseason.
  • Golds Gym played their best game in a loss to the Raiders, and beat the Nomads.  When they get passes off, they can make plays.  However, too many plays ended in the offensive backfield.
  • The Nomads brought 12 players to Hagerstown, and had 7 healthy bodies for Sunday's competition.  They are building, but you gotta have more guys than that on the road.
  • The X-Dawgs need to play better competition in their league play.  They have a lot of classy guys, but a few guys don't seem to fit that class.  The injury bug hurt them bad on Saturday, and you would think they could bring in emergency players after getting beat up.  That being said, they can scare the hell out of good teams, and #81 is a pain to catch.
