SCRAP HAPPY

Approximately 46” x 60”

Pattern fee - $5

While this quilt was designed to make good use of the many 6” charm squares quilters often collect, it can also be easily made using only a limited number of fabrics. For this reason, yardage is listed for strips as well as individual squares. Border #2 is optional and is also scrappy. Bring extra squares if you plan to trade with your neighbors.

Blocks only: Seventy 3” squares, or thirteen 3” selvage-to-selvage strips cut into seventy 3” squares.

Side stripes are 1 3/8” x 7 ½”. You will need 140 stripes total – four per block. Yardage is 1 1/8 yd. just cut 1 3/8” strips as we will adjust the length (if necessary) in class.

Background: ¾ yd. This can be either light or dark, but should be of high contrast against the 3” squares. Cut one 4 ¾” strip and one 2 5/8” strip. This will be enough to get you started. Be sure to bring the rest of the background fabric with you to class.*

Border #1: ¾ yd. multicolored print that contains your favorite colors.

Optional #2 Border:

56 – 3” squares, or five 3” strips.

112 – 2” squares, or six 2” strips.

Background: ½ yd. Cut one 3 1/2” strip into 13 – 3 1/2” squares.

* To make all thirty five blocks and border #2 you will need a total of 1 3/8 yd. background fabric.

All yardage is based on 40” wide fabric. Your mileage may vary.

Other important items to consider are a sewing machine in good working order, a neutral thread (I like grey), extra machine needles, seam ripper, 6” x 12” ruler, rotary cutter and mat, and any other item you may require.

CORDS AND THREADS

As this is a personalized art quilt project the size of your finished piece will vary. For reference my “Corded Pansies” is 8 ½” x 11”. “Lily” is 12 ½” x 13”.

Pattern fee - $5 for the first, $3 for each additional pattern

Supplies

1.      A selection of various tones, tints and textures in a single color for the background. For example, if you want your background to read “green”, then select a variety of greens. Keep in mind, however, that you need very little of any one fabric.

2.      About 6” (selvage to selvage) any sheer -chiffon, nylon, organza, etc. - any color. It truly doesn’t matter what color as it will be almost completely obscured by thread.

3.      A variety of rayon threads in floral and leaf shades – pink, three shades of green, violet, white, yellow. These will work for the pansies and the lily. Add others for more depth and detail in your work.

4.      Bobbin weight thread such as Bottom Line by Superior Threads or any lingerie thread will make your thread painting experience much more enjoyable.

5.      BLACK cotton thread for the bobbin. (You don’t need a full  bobbin, just a little.) If you are planning on using a dark background, then bring WHITE cotton instead.

6.       Heavyweight fusible interfacing, available at any fabric store and has fusible on one side only. A half yard will be enough for borders on two little quilts.

7.      OPTIONAL, but tons of fun: novelty yarns, bits of tulle, lame, beads and buttons. I will bring a limited amount of this stuff for you to play with.

8.      Your sewing machine must be able to drop the feed dogs and do a wide satin stitch.

9.      Scissors and a seam ripper.

10.  An open mind! This is a technique class that ends with a really cool project. I hope you will finish the session asking yourself “Where else could I apply this amazing and fun technique?”

11.  To finish the quilt you will need batting and a backing fabric.  I prefer a thin cotton bat.

STAINED GLASS SHUFFLE

Twelve 12" squares. Jewel tones work best for a stained glass effect.
1 yd solid black. Cut about four 3/4" strips to get you started. Bring the rest with you.
1/2 yd each flannel(for lining) and backing fabric.

Black thread, 6x12 ruler, optional-6x24 ruler, rotary cutter and mat, sewing machine in good working order, scissors, seam ripper and anything else you would consider necessary for a good sewing experience.

two contrasting 6x8 fabrics for the face
one 3x5 light for the neck.
smaller chunks of various colors, prints and textures for the eyes, eyelids, nose, mouth and lips. a large print novelty fabric- fat quarter or larger. We will be cutting motfis from it to attach to the face to create character.
one half yard WonderUnder or other fusible.
Buttons, charms, beads or other fun stuff
kit fee $10
The kit contains multiple patterns for head shapes as well as eyes, nose, etc. You will also have access to a variety of novelty fabrics, sheers, metallics, buttons, trims, yarns and other items so that you can personalize your face.

While most of this project is fusible please bring your sewing machine along with a neutral thread so that you can do a bit of machine applique and some couching.

SEISMIC ACTIVITY

(Yardages are based on 40” wide fabric and are measured selvage to selvage unless otherwise noted.)

Dark Green #1 – six 2” squares

Dark Green #2 - six 2” squares

Purple #1 – 12”

Purple #2 – 24”

Dark Yellow – 8”

Medium Orange – 30”

Dark Orange or Rust – 12”

Light Green #1 – 30”

Light Green #2 – 18 “

The above amounts are somewhat generous and allow for error in cutting free-form curves. These amounts will make twelve blocks plus sashing and the first two narrow borders. Additional yardage is necessary to construct the outer patchwork border. You will need ¼ yard each of five purples. (The color of this outer border is best decided after the central portion is completed.)

Also necessary is a sewing machine in good working order, a sewing kit to include neutral thread, scissors and snips, rotary cutter, mat, acrylic ruler. The 6x12 is a good, all-purpose size. OPTIONAL - a 6x24 ruler and a 12.5 square-up ruler.
