Welcome to First Grade!

Sunday, July 1, 2007

This is going to be a fun and exciting year. This year you will get to do many things with your friends, like go to class parties and field trips and play learning games.  Do you like to listen to music?  We will learn songs and dances that teach us new ideas.  You will also get to be an author and write your very own stories.  You will get to share some of your stories on our classroom stage. Best of all, you will learn to read.  You will read funny stories, scary stories, and true stories about animals and weather.  I hope you like plays, too.  You will read and perform many of those.  I love first grade and I believe you will, too.

Reading Counts

This year you will get to do "Reading Counts."  Reading Counts is the name of the book tests that you get to take about the books you check out from the library.  Each time you read a library book or have a library book read to you,  you can take a computer test about the book.  If you pass the test you earn a point.  Students scoring 50 points by the end of April will get to go on their choice of a skating or bowling field trip. Reading library books is a lot of fun and taking the computer tests are even more fun. Each time you pass a test, a cartoon screen appears with your name on it.  Don't worry if you can't yet read your library book or computer tests. Your parents can read your library book to you and we have volunteers who read the computer tests.  By January almost all of you will be reading your very own library books and tests.  Good luck and enjoy the books!

School Safety

We here at Savoy are dedicated to keeping the children in our school safe.  In response to safety concerns we are now keeping only one door to the building open  to the public.  This will be the door that is closest to the office, so that staff can monitor those coming into our building.  Please be sure to stop by the office and sign in anytime you enter the building, except when dropping your child off in the morning.

We have a plan in place for inclement weather occurences,  and other safety concerns requiring school lockdown or evacuation. We will be having drills throughout the year to practice these plans.

First Grade Cheer

First Grade Is the Best!

First grade is fantastic.

First grade is the best!

We get to read and write.

Forget that nap time rest!

We get to do some adding.

And graphs are so much fun!

I really like my teacher.

I am sad when the day is done.

First grade, first grade, first grade.

It simply is the best!
