Behind the Scenes:
Learning About Oxen at Colonial Williamsburg

In October 2008, I had an opportunity I just couldn't pass up - a three-day symposium on oxen at Colonial Williamsburg, VA. "Oxen in the Old and New World" offered a look at all things oxen... health, training, equipment, and historical - as well as contemporary views - of oxen and their uses throughout the world. Best of all was the opportunity to work with oxen of all ages - from calves new to the yoke to trained teams that regularly walk the streets of Williamsburg.

Surrounded by the seasonal palette of autumn's colors, I walked the historic paths and roads between the DeWitt-Wallace Museum and Great Hopes Plantation, with some time on my last day to explore "Revolutionary City."
Go to our oxen page for more information and photos of this adventure.
