Historic photographs of Highland Park
This map was drawn in the 1700s long before the town of Highland Park took shape. There were only
a few farmsteads on the east bank (right side) of the Raritan River along the narrow dirt roads that had been laid out in
the 1600s. There were no bridges over the Raritan River for travelers...only Inian's ferry offered a dry river
crossing compared to walking or riding a horse through the water during low tide. The first Albany Street Bridge was
constructed of wood in 1795 and it was a toll bridge until 1875.
