Obituary
Rev. Paul Murray, 61
Rev. Paul Murray, a gay Roman Catholic chaplain, professor and writer, died Jan. 30 in Tivoli, N.Y., of a systemic infection,
according to his friend, Stephen McDonnell. Murray was 61.
Murray was born Aug. 4, 1947, in Arlington, Va. He was the author of "Life in Paradox: The Story of a Gay Catholic Priest,"
a memoir published in 2008. The book detailed his life story, from growing up in Arlington as a politically conservative Episcopalian
to his conversion into the Roman Catholic Church. "Life in Paradox" also recounted his ordination in the Archdiocese of Washington
and his coming out as gay.
Murray was the founder and executive director of Among Friends, a D.C. facility that offered transitional housing, counseling
and job-search support to gay persons in crisis.
He also served Dignity Washington, a gay Christian community, as a presiding priest for at least the past two decades,
according to Dignity Washington's office manager, Rick Lynch.
In 1998, Murray became a Roman Catholic chaplain and visiting assistant professor of religion at Bard College. Murray
graduated from the college in 1971, according to a statement from Leon Botstein, Bard College president.
Murray is survived by his mother, Verna Murray of Arlington, Va.; his sister, Rebecca Burns of Alexandria, Va.; and two
nieces. A funeral Mass will take place at St. Stephen Martyr Church, 2436 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

To
the Bard College Community:
I have the sad duty to inform you that Father Paul Edward Murray '71, our Roman Catholic
chaplain and visiting assistant professor of religion, died suddenly at his home in Tivoli on Friday evening. Author of
the recent memoir Life in Paradox: The Story of a Gay Catholic Priest, Father Murray engaged theological truth with courage
and faith. Before returning to Bard in 1998, Paul was the founder and executive director of Among Friends, Inc., and engaged
in pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. He received his Ph.D. in anthropology from the Catholic University
of America. Paul was a loyal and devoted alumnus, a caring and kind teacher, and a much loved priest.
The Chaplaincy
is making arrangements for a memorial service that will be held on campus later in the semester. The community is invited
to join the Religion Colloquium today, Monday, February 2, at 5:30 in Olin 205.
On behalf of everyone in the Bard community,
I send heartfelt condolences to his family.

Greetings,
St. Blaise
Yesterday was the feast of St. Blaise, the day when we, as Catholics, participate in the beautiful tradition of having
our throats blessed. To do this, the priest consecrates two candles, generally by a prayer, and then holds each in a crossed
position on the throat of the person being blessed. At the same time the following blessing is given: "Through the intercession
of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. In the name
of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." St. Blaise, a physician and bishop, asked God to cure a child
who was choking to death on a fish bone and the child's life was saved. Thus, St. Blaise is the patron saint of healthy throats.
In honor of St. Blaise day, we will have a throat blessing after mass this Saturday.
Teaching Our Faith
The liturgical calendar, which starts with the First Sunday of Advent, is broken up into five seasons: Advent, Christmas,
Lent, Easter and Ordinary Time. The weeks of Ordinary Time, though far from ordinary, do not celebrate a specific mystery
of Christ (like Sundays of the other seasons), but rather are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its fullness.
This season lasts for 33 or 34 weeks and is found between the seasons of Christmas and Lent, and again between Easter and
Advent.
During Ordinary Time, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
on February 2. This feast is celebrated to commemorate the circumcision of Jesus as well as his dedication to God according
to the Law of Moses. It is celebrated forty days from the date of Christmas because in Jewish custom, a woman was unclean
after childbirth and could not enter the Temple until a period of purification happened. Mary and Joseph presented Jesus
to the priests of the Temple dedicating him to God. Simeon, an old man who prayed at the temple day and night, recognized
that Jesus was the one that would redeem Israel. His prayer became what is known as the Canticle of Simeon and
is prayed during night prayer by priests, religious, and some of the faithful. "Lord, now let your servant go in peace;
your word has been fulfilled: my own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a
light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel." Before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council,
February 2 was known as Candlemas, which used to conclude the season of Christmas and Epiphany. Priests bless beeswax
candles on this day for use in both churches and homes throughout the entire year.
Ordinary Time ends with the secular celebration of Mardi Gras. This
celebration offers one last party before the penitential season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (February 25 this year).
Ash Wednesday is named for the ashes that are placed on the forehead in the shape of a cross. The ashes are the result
of burning the dried palm branches from Palm Sunday of last year. The Season of Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday to the
evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday. Throughout this penitential season, we, as Catholic Christians, are challenged
by three Lenten tenets: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As we approach Lent, how are you going to increase your prayer
life, fast from things that may not be the best for you, and how will you give to the poor?.................................................(Thanks
to M. Scheeser of DW)
DW Valentine's Day Potluck Dinner
The next DW potluck will be on Saturday, 2/14, in the party room at 1016
S. Wayne St. in Arlington near Columbia Pike. All are invited. Please bring a main dish, a side dish, a beverage,
or a dessert.

At 4:15 pm, the new board of directors will hold their first meeting of the year. Several important
issues are to be discussed including our liturgical and other plans for 2009, a financial report for 2008, and a budget
for 2009. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting to give advice and support to the board.
We
are most delighted to welcome Sister Jeannine Gramick to our Second Saturday Seminar series. Sister Jeannine's topic
is "Journey of the Three Queens: Where We've Been, Where We are Now and Where We're Going." This will start promptly

world and into our lives this night.

following mass for a sweets party. All are most welcomed and encouraged to attend.
Christmas
Day
D/Washington will sponsor a mass on 12/25 at 6:00pm at St. Margaret's.
Upcoming
Events
The Feast of the Holy Family will be celebrated at D/NoVA this Saturday at 6:30 PM
at ICOH, and on Sunday at DW at St. Margaret's at 6:00 PM.
On Thursday, January 1, 2009, DW will sponsor a mass to celebrate the Feast of Mary,
Mother of God, at the Dignity Center at 7:30 PM.
Our new Board of Directors take office on January 1, 2009. Many thanks to our current
board members who have given generously of their time and talent to keep our organization operating. We will have our regular
liturgy with installation and blessing of our new board of directors on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 6:30 PM at ICOH.
Dignity
Northern Virginia's Web Site
Please be sure to regularly check out our web site at: dignitynova.org There you can
find copies of our Bulletins, links to other interesting web sites, a calendar of events, interesting reflections on issues
of pertinence to our community, and a wealth of other information. If you have any links or other information which you think
should be added to our web site, please let David L know.
Thanks
No doubt, your mailbox is filled with request for year end donations from many worthy
organizations whose needs may be more acute this year than in the past. And of course, it is our hope that you will be as
generous as possible to help sustain the faith community of D/NoVA. In 2008, our expenses of almost $17,000 have exceeded
our income by almost $4,000. However, we still very blessed to have over $11,000 in the bank to help sustain us over the year
ahead. As the New Year approaches, instead of making a special year end plea to help restore our dwindling funds, we simply
ask you to please accept our heartfelt thanks for all you have done this past year for D/NoVA and our warmest wishes for the
holidays.

COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS Please join us this Wednesday evening at 8:00 PM at ICOH for our Christmas Eve mass.
If possible, please bring a poinsettia to help decorate the church and some sweets to share for our dessert social which follows
mass. All of your friends and family are most welcome to join us as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ. As we celebrate this holy season we want to take note of our musicians who support and assist us in
an extraordinary manner as we pray. While the celebration of any liturgy is dependent upon so many people - the presider,
the congregation, the musicians, the lectors and acolytes and many others - our singing is essential to the nature of liturgy
as well as to the effect the sacred rites have on us. As of January 1st our musical accompanist's roster will
change a bit. Gene remains our mainstay, and we are grateful to him for his cheery spirit, his time and many talents - and
his willingness to step in in emergency situations. Greg C. takes his leave from us. We express or heartfelt
gratitude to him for his years of service to us. We hope that he will not be a stranger to our community in the future, and
we wish him well in his many musical commitments. We welcome Ted G. as a new member of our musical cadre. Ted
is a graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with a degree in organ and music education. He possesses a Master
of Church Music degree from the College of Church Musicians at the Washington National Cathedral. He has - and continues to
accompany - congregations at Christ Church in Alexandra, the Beth El Hebrew Congregation, the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel, St.
Mary's Church in Old Town and the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Alexandria. We offer a hearty welcome
to Ted and we hope that you will engage him in welcoming conversation when you see him. We also welcome Russell
Z., a member of the Dignity Washington community, who will accompany our community on his guitar, as may a member of many
years, Susan K. Welcome, and a happy and fruitful musical year to one and all! ____________________________________

Second Saturday Seminar
This Saturday at ICOH beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Rev. Dr. J. B. Hawkins IV, Ph.D., Executive Director, Center
for Anglican Communion Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary and a participant at the 2008 Lambeth Conference will discuss:
"The Anglican Communion After the Lambeth Conference." We are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to hear
from Dr. Hawkins on this issue which heretofore we have only been able to read but in the newspapers. Please plan to
join us for the program.
If you know of anyone who might be a potential presenter for our seminars, please contact Harry B.
Anointing
We are alos going to have an anointing
service during mass this Saturday. Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments. The sacrament prays for the
physical or emotional healing of the ill person, if that be the will of God. Its primary purpose, however, is spiritual. It
offers us grace to strengthen our faith and our ability to accept and endure the trials and struggles that come with serious
illness. The sacrament was commonly known before Vatican II as Extreme Unction or Last Rites. This name arose because over
time the sacrament became more identified as a preparation for death. Vatican II sought to bring the administration of the
sacrament back to its original and fuller meaning. One should not wait
until death is imminent to receive the sacrament, and we should no longer use the term "last rites" to refer to the sacrament.
Food Drive
During the holiday season, D/NoVA will help Our
Lady Queen of Peace Church to replenish their pantry which serves nearly 140 families each month. They are running low on
the following items: rice (large bags appreciated, they will rebag), dry beans (again they will repackage), canned vegetables,
soup, small jars of peanut butter, small jars of jelly, pasta and pasta sauce. Please bring these items to church with
you and we will arrange to take the items to OLQP. Thanks for your help in this very worthy effort.

work from the acclaimed Biblical scholar John J. McNeill. "Sex as God Intended It will make you think.
It will make you question everything you've heard in the media or in church about homosexuals and God. It will make you question
the rightness or wrongness of gay marriage. It will make you take a closer look at your faith and your beliefs. It is a book
that encourages spiritual and intellectual growth, and a book that all Christians should read, even if your pastor or minister
or priest tells you it is evil." -- Jack Gardner, Edge Boston Noted biblical scholar, moral theologian, and
psychotherapist John J. McNeill (The Church and the Homosexual) offers further insight into the portrayal of sex in the Bible
and discusses how the original sex positive viewpoints have been twisted by the Church and society over the years. Citing
the generally overlooked Biblical book The Songs of Songs, McNeill argues that human sexual activity represents a form of
"play" that provides a source of pleasure, joy and love. From the beginning, he says, this is what God intended sex to be,
not a cause of judgment, oppression, and resentment. New York-based psychotherapist and retreat director Ken
Page contributed the foreword. This volume also offers a Festschrift celebrating the life and work of John J. McNeill. In
a collection of thirteen essays, voices of acclaimed religion scholars, theologians, ministers and teachers such as Mark Jordan,
Robert E. Goss, Jim Mitulski, Mary Hunt, Mel White, Daniel Helminiak, and Troy Perry are raised to cite the influence McNeill's
studies-and the example of his personal life-have had on their professional research and lives. This book
appears in coordination with the upcoming release of a video documentary about John McNeill, "Uncommon Jesuit," produced by
Festschrift contributor Brendan Fay. You can order at Queerbooks.com or at TLABooks or through Amazon or
ask your local bookseller to carry John's latest book. About John J. McNeill McNeill is a former Jesuit priest
who clashed with Church officials over his compassionate and sex-positive teachings about homosexuality. And this current
book continues in that tradition with a chapter on the very timely topic of Gay Marriage. McNeill makes the case that gay
people gaining the right to marriage equality promises to improve society's ideas about traditional heterosexual marriage;
same sex marriage would be good for everybody, if only because it offers of a model of relationship as equal partnership.
Sex as God Intended concisely presents wisdom about sexuality and homosexuality that McNeill has gained over his 83 year life.

World AIDS Day
In honor of World AIDS Day, D/NoVA had a special service during mass this past Saturday
to pray for those living with HIV/AIDS and to remember those whose lives touched our hearts and who have been taken
away from us by HIV/AIDS. To express more than words could ever do, candles were lit in their honor.
Father Joe H. opened our service with this special prayer:
"On this First Sunday of Advent, we gather with the knowledge that
this coming Monday the global community will observe World AIDS Day. In this Advent celebration of the Paschal Mystery,
we wait in joyful hope for a cure to this world crisis, uniting ourselves in prayer for all whose lives and whose families
have been ravaged by HIV and AIDS."
During mass,
we prayed for the scientific community, that it might be supported and encouraged in discovering a cure for the terrible pandemic of HIV/AIDS. We prayed that we might be aware
of the yearning for compassion, welcome, and service of those living with HIV/AIDS.
We prayed for those with HIV/AIDS who feel rejected, persecuted, shamed, and abandoned
and for the families and circles of friends who care for persons living with HIV/AIDS.
At the close, Father Joe offered this blessing:
As a worshiping community, we have
been challenged by such a moment as this!
A moment when we know we are living
with AIDS and that we are loved and affirmed.
A moment in which we can offer compassion
to those with AIDS and HIV.
A moment where we can sit and comfort
those who suffer illness or grieve loss.
A moment when we stand in solidarity
with the care partners, health care workers, and researchers as they continue their diligent labor.
A moment and an opportunity to be
with all those who are ill with any disease. Those worried, fearful or weary. Those carrying others in prayer.
In this moment: We all stand in need of God's healing.
If you who were not able to make it to this very touching service, we have
attached a picture of our memorial candles and ask that on Monday, December 1, World AIDS Day, you remember
all the victims of HIV/AIDS in your prayers.
Thanks to Father Joe for his leadership; to Kevin S., Mark J., and David L. for gathering
the items needed for this service; and to Harry B. and Jack K. for putting it all together.

In honor of World AIDS Day, D/NoVA is planning a special service during mass this Saturday,
Nov. 29, to honor the memory of those who have died of AIDS. Please join us in remembering in a special way the lives
of those who touched our hearts and who were taken away from us by AIDS.
Seasonal Events
During the holiday season, D/NoVA will help

10th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20th was the
10th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance, an opportunity
to remember those who have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred and prejudice. Over the last decade, more than one transgender person a month has died due to anti-transgender violence. Transgender Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to memorialize the lives of
the individuals who have died violently because of hatred and prejudice. It is an opportunity for allies to come forward
and commit to ending violence against transgender people, to securing equality for all before the law regardless of gender
identity or expression and to ensuring that no one is denied basic human rights or equal dignity simply because of who they
are.
Book of Remembrance
It is the Church's custom and tradition to remember all the deceased, and particularly our deceased
loved ones during the month of November. D/NoVA's
Book of Remembrance keeps before our eyes the names, the memories and the lives of those who have gone before us and who have
served in some way as mentors and teachers for us in the ways of life and faith.
You will have the opportunity when you come to Mass to add the names of deceased friends and loved ones in the Book of Remembrance
which will be placed on the altar during our Masses in November. We ask God
in every Mass to give these deceased loved ones eternal rest and life on high in God's realm and our thoughts are especially
with those who have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred and prejudice.
World
AIDS Day
In
honor of World AIDS Day, D/NoVA is planning a special service during mass on Nov.
29 to honor the memory of those who have died of AIDS. Please join us in remembering
in a special way the lives of those who touched our hearts and who were taken away from us by AIDS.
DC
Different Drummers is sponsoring a special World AIDS Day musical presentation to benefit some local charites on Wednesday,
Dec. 1 at 8:00pm with a VIP reception at 7:00pm. The event will take place at the new Harmon Hall of the Shakespeare
Theatre at 610 F Street, NW in Washington. Tickets and further information can be obtained by calling 202-547-1122 or on the

Seasonal
Events
During the holiday season, D/NoVA will help Our Lady Queen of Peace Church
to replenish their pantry which serves nearly 140 families each month. They are running low on the following items: rice (large
bags appreciated, they will rebag), dry beans (again they will repackage), canned vegetables, soup, small jars of peanut butter,
small jars of jelly, pasta and pasta sauce. Please bring these items to church with you and we will arrange to take
the items to OLQP. Thanks for your help in this very worthy effort.
Also, D/NoVA is supporting the American Red Cross' "Holiday Mail
for Heroes" campaign to distribute holiday cards to service members and veterans both in the United States and abroad.
The Holiday Mail for Heroes program is a great way to acknowledge the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform.
You can bring holiday cards inscribed with your greeting in unstamped envelopes to D/NoVA, and we will forward them to:
Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD. 20791-5456. All cards must be brought to church no
later than Dec. 6. No glitter cards can be accepted.
Second
Saturday Seminar
At
our next session on December 13 at ICOH beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Rev. Dr. J. B. Hawkins IV, Ph.D., Executive Director,
Center for Anglican Communion Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary and a participant at the 2008 Lambeth Conference will
discuss: "The Anglican Communion After the Lambeth Conference." We are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity
to hear from Dr. Hawkins on this issue which heretofore we have only been able to read but in the newspapers. Please
plan to join us for the program.
If
you know of anyone who might be a potential presenter for our seminars, please contact Harry B.
Anointing
We
are planning to have an anointing service during mass on December 13. Anointing of the Sick is one
of the seven sacraments. The sacrament prays for the physical or emotional healing of the ill person, if that be the will
of God. Its primary purpose, however, is spiritual. It offers us grace to strengthen our faith and our ability to accept and
endure the trials and struggles that come with serious illness. The sacrament was commonly known before Vatican II as Extreme
Unction or Last Rites. This name arose because over time the sacrament became more identified as a preparation for death.
Vatican II sought to bring the administration of the sacrament back to its original and fuller meaning. One should not wait
until death is imminent to receive the sacrament, and we should no longer use the term "last rites" to refer to the sacrament.
Christmas Eve
We are planning our traditional Christmas Eve mass to take place on 12/24 at ICOH at 8:00 PM with a pot luck desert
social following mass. Please bring your family and friends to join us in the celebration of the birth of our Lord.
And remember to bring a treat to share at the party and a poinsettia to decorate the church. But mainly, just be sure
to share this wonderful celebration with your faith community.
Items
D/NoVA
sent a check in loving memory of Mrs. Joan O'Hare, mother of Father Joe O'Hare, to the Sisters of Providence in accord with
the family wishes.
D/NoVA
sent a check to NOVAM to support their efforts in providing assistance to those individuals suffering with AIDS.
D/NoVA
is looking for ideas on improving our web site. The best idea will win a prize to be determined at a later date.
Please contact John W.
The next meeting of the D/NoVA board of directors is scheduled for
December 6 at 6:00PM at ICOH. All are encouraged to attend and participate in the these meetings.
On December 6, a graduate student from Liberty University who is studying
marriage and family therapy plans to attend mass with us. He is working on a paper for his class. In short, the
paper requires that he join a support group/meeting/etc. and interview someone afterward. The objective of the paper
is for future therapists to take a step toward understanding the world view of a group that is routinely stereotyped,
discriminated against, etc. He believes that GLBT folks suffer an inane amount of inhumanity, and that by understanding
the issues of marginalized groups, future therapists would be in a better position to help someone in therapy.
Please consider making yourself available to discuss these issues with him after mass. If you have any questions or
concerns, please contact David L. for additional information about the project.

On Sunday, November 9, Mrs. Joan O'Hare, the mother of Father Joe O'Hare, passed away as
a result of a sudden cerebral hemorrhage she suffered the evening before. Mrs. O'Hare was 84. According to Joe
who is one of our presiders, his mother was enjoying a birthday celebration for her granddaughter on Saturday evening,
along with many family members and friends, and she was stricken suddenly on her way home. In addition to Joe, Mrs.
O'Hare is survived by her husband, and several children and grandchildren.
Information available at this time is that Mrs. O'Hare will be buried at Arlington National
Cemetery on Tuesday, December 16. The funeral Mass will take place that day, at 12:45 PM, in the chapel at Ft. Myer.
Joe has mentioned that his mother wanted donations in her memory to be made to the Sisters of Providence of Indiana, an order
she knew and cherished. (As we learn more details, we will be sure to pass them along.) Thanks to DW for providing
us with this information. Those wishing to send personal expressions of sympathy to Joe may address them as follows:

Book of Remembrance
It is the Church's custom and tradition to remember all the deceased, and particularly our deceased
loved ones during the month of November. We celebrated All the Saints on Thursday and All Souls Day on Friday which
was a day to remember all the deceased - those who, like each of us - are called to be saints. The Second Vatican Council
reminds us that the vocation to which each of us is called is the vocation of holiness - to be the best saints we can be in
the midst of the life we live out each and every day.
Our Book
of Remembrance keeps before our eyes the names, the memories and the lives of those who have gone before us and who have served
in some way as mentors and teachers for us in the ways of life and faith. You will have the opportunity when you come to Mass
to add the names of deceased friends and loved ones in the Book of Remembrance which will be placed on the altar during our
Masses in November. We ask God in every Mass to give these deceased loved ones eternal rest and life on high in God's realm.
VETERANS'
DAY 2008
D/NoVA thanks all of our Veterans and active duty servicemen and women and their families who
have sacrificed so much so that we can live in a country free to exercise our own religious freedoms. We honor
their service, remember their sacrifice, and pray for the peace which they have given so much.
In today's Washington Post, there were two articles which might be of interest.

November 6, 2008
This is to remind you that we will be having our Second Saturday Seminar tomorrow, 11/7/2008, starting at
5:30 pm at ICOH. Harry B. will be leading us in a discussin of the gospel of Mark. Mass follows at 6:30 pm.
All are welcome to attend.
2008 ANNUAL MEETING NOTES and ELECTION
Dignity NoVA held its Annual Meeting on Saturday, 11/1/2008, at ICOH. The meeting was called to order immediately following mass. There were 16 people in
attendance. The president, Beth W., determined that there were a sufficient number
of members present to constitute a quorum for the purposes of conducting the Annual Meeting as set forth in our bylaws.
Our president, Beth W. gave the following report:
We at Dignity
NoVA continue to be blessed with a group of people who value their Catholic faith enough to choose to participate as members
of Dignity despite the hierarchy's lack of welcome. We have a core group of members who offer their time and talent to run
the chapter Board of Directors and hold a weekly liturgy. We have several priests who generously share the duty of presider
at our Mass, even though some parishes have difficulty finding priests to serve them. Some talented people serve in the ministry
of music, playing the piano and organ for community participation. Others have helped us socialize by preparing refreshments
after Mass, by hosting parties at their homes, and by bringing food for special potluck socials. We wish to involve more members
in active work with our chapter. So we ask you to search yourselves for ways you can participate more fully in the activities
of Dignity NoVA.
Our treasurer, David L. gave the following financial report:
For the period 01/01/2008 through 10/31/2008, we had $10,454.64 in Income and $13,818.36 in Expenses. On 10/31/2008, we had a balance of $6,317.39 in the General Fund and $5,427.00 in
the Belle Fund. We started off on 01/01/2008 with a total balance of $14,173.10
and we had a total balance of $11,744.39 on !0/31/2008.
We are holding steady at 15 to 20 people at every mass. Although our attendance is sufficient to sustain our community spiritually, our finances
continue to deteriorate as we spend more each week than we take in. On average,
we spend over $300 each week, but we are taking in less than $200 each week.
Our community could not continue without the countless
hours of time freely contributed by our members. Just as volunteering is a personal
decision, so is financial support for our community based on each persons' financial circumstances. Some will be able to give
more and others less. On average, if each of the 15 to 20 people attending mass
could contribute $15 to $20 per week, we would be able to cover our expenses and not continue to deplete our reserves.
Our Liturgy Chair, Harry B. gave the following report:
We are going to try to have an anointingh service before
Christmas. We will have the Christmas Eve mass at 8:00 Pm with a pot luck dessert
social following mass. All will be encouraged to bring a poinsettia to decorate the church.
HAry B. will be presenting our Second Saturday Seminar next Saturday, 11/8, at ICOH @5:30 PM on the gospel of St. Mark.
There was a discussion of moving to a church on a Metro line. The individual
who made this suggestion did not attend the meeting to present any factual basis for the recommendation other than an opinion
offered with the suggestion that it would be more convenient if D/NoVA was located on a Metro line. It was noted that the board had previously discussed and rejected the idea of moving. Kevin S. was of the opinion that since the board had previously decided the issue, we need not consider
it further. Comments regarding how much we appreciated ICOH were offered. David L. noted that the board had received input on the issue and it was concluded
by the board that while being located on a Metro might be more convenient for some people, it would be less convenient for
others. In fact, there was an indication that if we moved from ICOH, certain
members would seek another spiritual home. It was the consensus of those at the
Annual Meeting that since no data was presented indicating the availability of another church, the cost of another church,
the willingness of another church to let us use their facilities on Saturday evening and for Christmas Eve services and for
Holy Week, and no evidence that the potential membership gain would offset the potential membership lost if we moved from
ICOH, the issue of moving would not be considered any further until compelling evidence was presented which would warrant
further consider of a move. Mark J. noted that we could increase our advertising
of the fact that we usually can and do pick up people from the Metro who wish to attend mass with D/NoVA.
There was a discussion of possible fund raising events and implementing a dues structure for D/NoVA. Beth W. noted that D/USA had started charging $50 a year for dues.
$10 of that is returned to the local chapter. Mark J. noted that raising
dues would not generate very much income. He was of the opinion that we needed
to be more aggressive about holding fund raisers for the chapter. David L. noted
that D/USA requires that there be 10 dues paying members for there to be an official Dignity chapter. David also noted that we probably had no more than 10 or 11 members who were also members of D/USA. No decision was made to raise chapter dues at this time, but there was recognition
of the continued shortfall of income.
There was a discussion of our gifts to other organizations. There was
some sentiment that we had not been giving enough to other groups. David L. noted
that the board had authorized $1200 from the General revenues be given to the Belle Fund which has been designated as the
fund from which we give money to other groups. He noted that we had given $627
in 2008 with over $400 of that going to D/USA when the president of D/USA visited us a few months ago. He also noted that we needed to consider donating money to NOVAM (about $250) to continue our membership
and involvement with that organization. In view of our deteriorating financial
situation, it was the consensus of those at the Annual Meeting that we needed to be prudent in giving money to other groups.
Our secretary, Laura H. introduced the candidates for election to positions on the board starting on 01/01/2009
noting that we had just enough candidates to fill all of our vacant positions on the board.
Harry B. made a motion to elect all the candidates to the appropriate positions.
Gene V. and Benjamin C. seconded the motion. A voice vote was conducted
and the secretary announced that following people were elected to the positions noted for a term of one year beginning 01/01/2009. For the position of president...................Mark J.; For the position of vice-president...........Beth W.;
For the position of secretary...................Laura H.; For the position
of treasurer...................David L.; For the position of At Large Member.....John
W.; For the position of At Large Member.....Patrick McN.
Prior to adjournment, Kevn S. expressed for the entire organization, gratitude to Beth W. for her willingness to have
served as president for the past 2 years.
The Annual Meeting was adjourned. A festive reception to honor the newly
elected board was held following the meeting.

October 30, 2008
Immediately following Mass this Saturday, we will be holding our annual meeting and elections for the
coming year. Included on the agenda will be:
1. a report from the president,
2. a discussion of our current financial situation,
3. a discussion of an issue raised by a member concerning possible relocation of mass
from ICOH to a location closer to Metro (this idea has been previously discussed by the board and rejected, but it has been
submitted yet again for discussion with no supporting data or information other than an opinion that it would be more convenient
for some people),
4. a discussion of possible fund raising events for D/NoVA including the implementation
of a dues structure for D/NoVA,
5. a discussion of our gifts to other organizations and causes,
6. a discussion of any issues which are of concern to you, and
7. the election of a new Board of Directors to lead us in 2009. In view of
the fact that we have just enough candidates for each open seat on the board, I have determined that pursuant to Article IX,
Section 2 d of the D/NoVA Bylaws, we will conduct the election by voice vote at the general meeting. Pursuant to Article
IX, Section 3, no new nominations from the floor at the meeting will be in order.
Q & As at any time through the meeting will be in order.
Your attendance and participation is highly encouraged. Following the meeting there will be a special
reception to celebrate the election of our new board.
Please find below a listing of the people have submitted statements for the offices of President,
Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and the two at-large board positions.
Laura Hart
Secretary D/NoVA
President
Mark J.
I submit my name for the office of president of Dignity NOVA Board of Directors. i will do my best to fulfill with
dignity and trust the obligations and challenges that await me.
Vice President
Beth W.
I would be glad to continue serving our community of D/NoVA by
running for the office of Vice President.
Treasurer
David L.
I ask for your support as I seek
another term as Treasurer of D/NoVA. I have learned very much since I became Treasurer in November 2005, and I
wish to continue to contribute to the organization as best I can.
Secretary
Laura H.
I would be very happy to serve
as D/NoVA's secretary again this coming year. I have a strong desire to do my part to make our community successful.
At-Large
John W.
I have been a member of Dignity Northern Virginia since in inception.
In the Spring of this year (2008) I was asked if I would be willing to serve on the Board in the recently-vacated at-large
seat, a request I accepted.
Once on the Board it became apparent to me that there was a direct correlation
between attendance, the collection plate, and Dignity's ability to survive as an institution. As unpopular as it seems to
be in the Catholic psyche to link worship and money, it is a fact of life that our weekly Mass costs money. And frequently
our weekly contributions do not meet out weekly expenses. Even with a comfortable bank balance, deficit spending cannot endure
forever.
We must assume that those who do attend Mass are contributing what they
can afford or are comfortable with, so asking more contributions for our core attendees is not the answer. Rather, I propose
that Dignity/NV conduct an awareness campaign in an attempt to increase and maintain attendance. My proposal is to run this
campaign in community weekly newspapers such, as the Falls Church Free Press. The campaign could consist of paid advertisements,
news releases, and background stories. This would not be cost free, but it may prove to be money well spent.
At Large
Patrick McN.
I wish to run for the at large seat on the Dignity NOVA Board of Directors.
It would be an honor to serve.

Please don't forget to join us this coming Saturday, October 11 at 5:30pm at ICOH for a special presentation as part
of our Second Saturday Seminar series. D/NoVA proudly present a lecture by Dr. Eugene Fisher discussing the present
state of the Jewish-Christian dialogue. Dr. Fisher is the preeminent expert in this field in the USA. All are
highly encouraged to attend this very special presentation which we are honored to sponsor. As usual, many thanks to
Harry B. for making all the arrangements for this program. If you plan to be present for Dr. Fisher's
presentation, you might wish to read his article on-line: Fisher, Eugene J.: "The Impact of Christian-Jewish
Dialogue on Catholic Biblical Studies" (2008) The article appears at http://escholarship.bc.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1142&context=scjr D/NoVA Election News: At the Board of Directors meeting on October 4, our Secretary, Laura H., announced
that we did not have sufficient nominations for all of our officer and at-large board member positions which become vacant
as of January 1, 2009. There is a possibility that a new candidate will run and that some of the current board will
reluctantly run again for different positions, but additional self-nominations would be welcomed. Laura has extended
the period for self-nominations until 10/15. Please contact her or any of the other current board members if you wish
to serve our community as a board member. Annual Meeting and Elections: The D/NoVA Board also decided
to hold our Annual Meeting on Saturday, November 1, immediately following the mass. In view of the limited number of
candidates for election, the Secretary will conduct the elections by a voice vote at the meeting. There will also be
an updated report on our financial situation from the Treasurer, and the President will discuss any other pertinent issues.
If you have any items or issues which you would like to discuss, please contact our president, Beth W. Musicians:
Our community is incredibly blessed to have the talents of Greg C. and Gene V. to call upon to lead us in music at our masses
each week. Not only do they lead us at mass, but they also spend time at home researching and selecting the appropriate
music for each mass, and then rehearsing the music selected. Their efforts to enhance our worship service are invaluable.
However, we are concerned with the issue of "burn out," and we do not want that to happen to either of them. If anyone
is aware of a musician who might be willing to help out once every month or two, or to fill in during an emergency, please
contact Harry B. National Coming Out Day, Saturday, October 11, 2008: For additional information, visit
the HRC web site at: HRC | National Coming Out
Day: October 11, 2008 Anointing Service: We are attempting to schedule an anointing service for October
18. Christmas Eve: We will again be having mass at ICOH on Christmas Eve at ICOH at 8:00pm with our annual
potluck dessert social to follow. Outreach: John W. is leading our effort in this area. If anyone
is aware of any local publications that might offer free advertising space for community organizations such as ours, please
let him know. Also, if anyone has any ideas about ways to improve our web site, please contact John. Vatican
II: In view of our programs concerning Vatican II, you might be interested in this book review which was published in
Sunday's Washington Post: A Spirit of Affirmation - washingtonpost.com Finally, thanks to
Beth W., Karen P., Jack K. and others for arranging our St. Francis of Assisi feast day pet blessing; thanks to David L. for
preparing copies of our pledge for Dignity USA's Solidarity Sunday initiative; and thanks to the two dozen folks who were
there on Saturday, October 4 for these events.

ELECTIONS. The election season is on now--not just for the President of the USA, but also for the President of
D/NoVA (a less powerful office, but no less important) and for the Board of Directors of D/NoVA. The offices of President,
Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer are up for election as well as two At Large members of the BoD. The term of
office is for one year starting January 1, 2009. It is crucial that we have members serving in each of these
offices. In January of every year, we must submit to the State of Virginia a listing of the names and addresses of each
of our officers and board members along with a $25 registration fee. If we do not have the names and addresses of officers
and board members to submit, we loose our incorporation status in Virginia. If we are not incorporated in Virginia,
there is a possibility that we will loose our tax-exempt status from IRS meaning that contributions to D/NoVA will no longer
be tax deductible. The deadline for filing to run for one of the open positions is September 30, 2008
unless that date is extended by the Secretary. Please consider throwing your hat into the ring for one of the open positions
by responding to this email with an indication of the position you wish to run for along with a very brief 2 or 3 sentence
statement of why you want to run for the office indicated. As of today, it appears that we have only three people from
the current board who are willing to serve another term. Board of Directors Meeting. There will be a Board
of Directors meeting this coming Saturday, 10/4, at ICOH starting at 5:30 pm. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. St.
Francis of Assisi. To celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, there will be a special blessing of pictures of
your pets during mass this Saturday, 10/4. Be sure to bring your pet pics as proxies for the pet blessing. Dignity
Washington's 36th Anniversary. Congratulations to DW for 36 years of service to the GLBT Catholic community of the Washington,
DC area. They are celebrating the anniversary with a dinner party this Saturday night starting at 7:00pm. Last
minute reservations for the dinner at the Dignity Center may still be available. The cost is $30. If you wish to attend,
contact David L. at 703-243-2350 by September 30. Second Saturday Seminar. On Saturday, 10/11, starting
promptly at 5:30 PM, D/NoVA proudly present a lecture by Dr. Eugene Fisher discussing the present state of the Jewish-Christian
dialogue. Dr. Fisher is the preeminent expert in this field in the USA. All are highly encouraged to attend this
very special presentation which we are honored to sponsor. As usual, many thanks to Harry B. for making all the arrangements

Unloading." Please consider supporting this effort of our gracious host at ICOH. Also, on Saturday 10/18
from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on the ICOH parking lot, D/NoVA is invited to bring old electronics for destruction and disposal
(mother boards destroyed in your presence) and remainders disposed of ecologically. Parents of GLBT children.

Tickets are available online or by calling 703-533-5505 x13. The Concert for Hope is a musical celebration in honor
and recognition of World AIDS Day which is held annually on December 1st. The goal is to bring the community together in an
uplifting, positive way and promote the good work that is being done locally to combat HIV/AIDS. This event is a celebration
of life and the power of community to make a difference for individuals, children and families affected or infected by this
illness. Performers will include Potomac Fever, an a capella ensemble of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington,
D.C., and Mosaic Harmony, a multicultural, interfaith choir based in the Washington, D.C. area. _____________________________________________________________ September

presenters: Dr. Fisher and Dr. Hawkins, both of whom are world experts in their fields will be joining us for our seminars.
Please bring these sessions to the attention of friends who may wish to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge
and experience which these gentlemen will offer to us. These rare opportunities to hear from world-class experts on
these subjects in our informal setting should not be missed!

assist those who are registering for Harry's March, 2009, Lenten pilgrimage journey to the Holy Land - to which all are invited
to join (see attached). We are still working to confirm our speaker for October 11. On November 8,
with the transition into a new liturgical year on the First Sunday of Advent (November 30), Harry B. will offer an overview
of Luke's Gospel which is highlighted during the course of the Sundays of the new year. Luke reminds us that Jesus is the
Spirit-filled healer and reconciler whose presence and mission continues in and through us. The Gospel's companion piece,
the Acts of the Apostles, will also be considered in this presentation.

Many thanks to the 35 people who joined us on Saturday night to witness Karen and Beth renew their vows, and joined us
in a wonderful reception following mass. A special thanks to Angie and Eileen who provided the decorations and refreshments,
and to all those who helped set up and clean up afterwards. It was a special, historic event for D/NoVA as well as for
the entire LGBT community. Thanks to Beth and Karen for sharing their 25th anniversary with us and for being role models
in our community. Next Saturday, August 9, we will be having an anointing service as part of our weekly mass.
Please join us.

Bread, Not Stones
Which of you, if your children ask for bread, will give them stones?
--Matthew 7:9
On June 26, 2008, Archbishop Raymond Leo Burke removed Sister Louise Lears, SC, from the Pastoral Team of Saint Cronan
Parish and placed her under an interdict, which prohibits the reception of the Sacraments. In late December 2007, the Archbishop
delivered to Sister Louise a formal summons, accusing her of four canon law violations--all connected to her support of the
ordination of two women to the Roman Catholic Priesthood in November 2007 in St. Louis.
Throughout the process of investigation, Sister Louise and St. Cronan's parish community asked the Archbishop for opportunities
to communicate personally with him. Instead of engaging Sister Louise in dialogue, the Archbishop acted in a legal manner.
Instead of a pastoral approach, the Archbishop chose an adversarial process. Instead of using this situation as an opportunity
for creative growth, the Archbishop retreated to outdated methods of control. Sister Louise and the community of St. Cronan's
asked for bread, so that they and the church could be nourished and grow. They received stones.
Together with the people of Saint Cronan's and the National Coalition of American Nuns, we, the undersigned, stand in
solidarity with Sister Louise Lears as a woman of integrity and courage. We stand with all men and women who seek a church
that values gender equality in every aspect of life and ministry, including priestly ordination. We stand with all who feel
oppressed by patriarchal and imperial structures in the Church, rather than the loving and compassionate model the Gospel
reflects.
It is difficult to imagine that Peter would place Paul under interdict for advocating the admission of uncircumcised
Gentiles into the faith community. It is difficult to imagine Jesus harshly punishing a faithful disciple for disagreeing
with him. It is difficult to imagine how the Christian faith could develop without the voices of faithful dissent. It is difficult
to imagine a Gospel-based faith community that stifles freedom of conscience.
We pray for Church leaders. We ask that they provide, not stones, but the bread of life for Sister Louise, for St. Cronan's
community, and for all of us who seek nourishment.

D/NoVA was honored to have DignityUSA President
Mark Matson and Executive Director Marianne Duddy-Burke join us at mass last Saturday evening. They spoke briefly about
D/USA's efforts during the Pope's visit which were very well received and widely distributed, about their plans for D/USA,
and about the success of their efforts so far to help re-energize D/USA and to re-connect with the chapters. As Father
Tim noted during his homily, it is important that we understand that we are not alone, but that we are part of a larger community
and organization which can significantly increase the effectiveness of our voice in responding to the Vatican. At the
end of mass, our president, Beth W., presented Marianne and Mark with a check for D/USA in the amount of $402 which represented
the $202 collected the last two weeks and $200 from the Belle Fund. Thank you very much for your generosity. It
is not required that you be a member of D/USA to be a member of D/NoVA. However, D/USA does provide a critical service
which deserves our support. Membership in D/USA costs $50 a year. You can find out more about D/USA and become
a member by visiting their web site at: dignityusa.org Current members of D/USA are reminded that ballots
for the board of directors are due now. Among the candidates running for the board is Mark Clark of Dignity Washington
who is worthy of your consideration and support. Our last Second Saturday Seminar for this semester will be this
Saturday evening, June 14, at 5:30 PM at ICOH. Father Stephen will lead the discussion on "Our Liturgy. Where from?
Where to?" Please join us for this program and stay for mass which will follow at 6:30 PM. On Sunday, June
15, D/NoVA will be distributing our brochures from the DW booth at the Capital Pride Festival. Please stop by and say
hi. Thanks to DW for letting us share their space. On Monday, June 16, there will be an LGBT Interfaith
Service at Hope Church UCC at 6130 Old Telegraph Rd. in Alexandria from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. All are invited to attend.
On Saturday, June 21, we will be celebrating mass at St. Clement's at 6:30 PM. Visit our website at dignitynova.org
for directions. In March, 2009, Harry B. will be leading a 10-day tour of the Holy Lands. The trip's projected
cost will be about $2900 each based on two people sharing the same twin bedded room with private bath. The trip is open
to one and all, but will be limited to a maximum of thirty-five (35) travelers. Please direct any questions and concerns you
may have to Harry at: departurepoint@aol.com or by fax at (703) 242-4212, or by toll-free phone at (800) 764-6836. And if you are thinking of joining other members of
D/NoVA on the trip, please let him know your intentions soon by e-mail, fax or phone so that he can begin to construct a tentative
list of prospective voyagers. Please see the attached itinerary for further information. (Sorry if there is no

On Saturday evening, June 6, Mark Matson, the president of DignityUSA, and Marianne Duddy-Burke, the Executive Director
of D/USA will be with us to celebrate mass at 6:30 pm. They will speak to us briefly about the activities of Dignity
USA, and they will be glad to address any questions or concerns you might have about the group. D/USA is THE voice for
LGBT Catholics in this country. Mark and Marianne are here to help plan the D/USA Convention which will be held in DC
in 2011. They will be meeting at the Dignity Center at noon on Saturday to consider some different models for the convention
in 2011 to attempt to make the convention more attractive to a larger and wider audience. Please join us for the meeting
or send your ideas to us by replying to this email. D/NoVA has been collecting money for D/USA at mass
the last two weeks. We collected $202. Together with $200 from the D/NoVA Belle Fund, we plan to present Mark
and Marianne with a check for $402 to show D/NoVA's appreciation and support for all their efforts during the Pope's recent
visit as well as for their efforts to re energize D/USA. Thank you for your contributions. In case you are
not on the D/USA email list, please visit them on the web at dignityusa.org and be sure to read the Publication
"Dateline" for a comprehensive look at the many activities D/USA is taking on our behalf as LGBT Catholics. After
mass, all are welcome to kick-off Pride Week in Washington with a Dignity Washington Pot Luck on the rooftop of Jim Bedore's

Ballots must be received by June 20. Please give consideration to DW's Mark Clark who is running for the board. Happy
Pride!

Dignity sponsored a series of events before and during the recent papal visit that sent our message around the world
on a wave of impressive media coverage. Most widely read was an AP story that has been seen in more than 170 outlets
to date. On April 10, Dignity USA cosponsored a panel discussion with notable LGBT Catholics organized
by New Ways Ministry. To listen to an audio file of the event, visit: New Ways Ministry Dignity
New York was at the UN on April 12 and their witness received tremendous media coverage both throughout the US and overseas.
AP photos and video have been used by many local outlets, blogs, and papers. To see pictures, watch a video news report,
and read the speeches from this event, visit: DignityUSA - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered Catholics and Dignity
New York On April 16, D/Washington coordinated two Witnesses along the papal motorcade routes. These was
reported on in the Washington Post and in a front page article in the Washington Blade which can be read at: Pope
waves to gay Catholic group - Washington Blade On April 19, D/NY member Brendan Fay (who co-produced the film
on Father Mychal Judge which several of us recently viewed) coordinated an interfaith vigil at ground Zero that focused on
the legacy of Father Judge. The vigil was covered by several local TV stations and newspapers. Dignity
USA Vice President Lourdes Rodriguez-Nogues appeared on the worldwide Univision news show Aqui y ahora; and Jamie Manson of
D/NY appeared on a local TV news show where she discussed women's ordination and other issues. During the week
of April 21, CBS News on Logo carried a story about Dignity's response to the papal visit. Many thanks are due
to all those dedicated, hard working folks who courageously stood up for us during the papal visit so that our prophetic voice
would not be silenced. Dignity USA president Mark Matson and Executive Director Marianne Duddy-Burke are going
to try to join us for mass on Saturday, June 7. It is expected that they will speak to us concerning the new initiatives
they are taking to strengthen D/USA as the voice of GLBT Catholics in this country as well as to re-energize the Dignity Chapters
across the nation. D/NoVA will again be collecting money after mass this Saturday for D/USA. Many
thanks to those who helped us collect $122 last week for D/USA. D/NoVA will match up to $200 in donations. If
you wish to give by check, please make you check payable to D/NoVA. You may also send any contributions to our post
office box: D/NoVA PO Box 100566 Arlington, VA. 22210-3566. We will combine the
funds and present a single check to Mark and Marianne at mass on June 7 to show D/NoVA's appreciation of D/USA's efforts and
support of D/USA's new leadership. D/USA provided an essential presence and voice for GLBT Catholics during
the Pope's recent visit to America. That voice is not free. Our support of D/USA's mission is critical.

D/NoVA will be celebrating its 16th Anniversary with a pot luck dinner after mass this coming Saturday night.
Please consider the following as a guide to what to bring. For those with a last name beginning A to I, it is suggested that
you bring a main dish. If your last name begins from J to Q, bring a dessert; and from R to Z, bring an appetizer.
But this is a suggestion only. The main thing is that you come and join the celebration of D/NoVA's 16 years of service
to the community and honor those members of our community who have given so much to keep our group healthy and strong. At
DW this coming Sunday, 5/18, there will be a guest homilist, the Rev. Peter Antoci, Episcopal Chaplain and Vicar at
the University of Maryland in College Park. As many of you know, Peter is a former member of D/W, and previously served
the community in a variety of leadership roles. Bishop Geoffrey Robinson, Auxiliary Bishop (retired) Sidney,
Australia, discusses his new book, "Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church-Reclaiming the Spirit of Jesus"
on Monday, May 19 at 7:00 pm at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center, 7100 Connecticut Ave, Chevy Chase MD. From
1997 until 2003, Bishop Robinson co-chaired the committee which coordinated the Australian Catholic Church's response to revelations
of sexual abuse. Following his talk, Bishop Robinson will sign copies of his book. (Available that evening for purchase at
cost. Cash or check only.) This event is sponsored by Voice of the Faithful, Greater Washington Affiliates.

Fr. Alexei's topic will be "Ecumenism - the Church and Inter-Religious Dialogue." Pope Benedict's recent visit to the
United States involved meetings with religious leaders and focused to a great extent on the Church's relationship with Christian
and non -Christian religious traditions and practices. Fr. Alexei's comments will highlight some of those relationships
and reflect on the Church's present posture in the field of inter-religious dialogue. D/NoVA's 16th Anniversary

D/USA "Quarterly Voice" View the 2nd Quarter 2008 QV Quarterly Voice in PDF: http://www.dignityusa.org/pdf/qv/2008/QV_DUSA_2ndQtr2008.pdf Journey to the HOLY LANDS in March 2009 Harry B. will be leading a pilgrimage vacation to the
Holy Lands next March. While many Americans express fear of traveling in the Holy Land, Harry's experience strongly suggest
that our fears are stretched out of reasonable proportions. Should a cancellation of the program, however, be called
for, he would not hesitate to take appropriate action. And it goes without saying that he would not take any person or any
group into harm's way. Visitors from other countries are, in fact, flocking to the Holy Land in substantial numbers. The
accompanying material will provide an explanation of the program. The per-person cost of the trip is projected at this time
to be $2,900, based on two people sharing a twin-bedded room with private bath and departing from Washington, D.C.'s Dulles
International Airport. The cost of departures from other cities would be prorated accordingly. The projected per-person cost
is subject to revision prior to departure due to fluctuating fuel costs, the international currency market and other variable
factors. By August 1st, Harry would like to have a sense of the number of people who might seriously consider
making the journey. He needs to have the proverbial 'ball park figure' so as to know how many seats to block on the flights
and how many rooms to continue to hold for the group in the hotels. Completed application forms and deposits will need to
be made around Labor Day – or as soon thereafter as someone is intending to travel. By the time registrations
are required you should be able to register for the travel program on line at his company's site, www.DeparturePointTravel.com The trip is open to one and all, but it is best to limit the group to a maximum of thirty-five (35) travelers.
Please direct any questions and concerns you may have to Harry at: departurepoint@aol.com or by fax at (703) 242-4212, or by toll-free phone at (800) 764-6836. Also contact him if you are not able to access the

IMPORTANT TAX NOTICE
Dignity Northern Virginia has been classified as a public charity by IRS and is exempt from federal income
taxes under section 501 ( c ) (3) of the IRS Code. It is qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers
or gifts; and in general, contributions to Dignity Northern Virginia can be claimed as a deduction on an individual’s
tax return under section 170 of the Code.
According to IRS, "cash" means any form of monetary contribution including cash, checks, money orders, credit
card contributions, etc. An individual must keep records to prove the amount of the cash, check, or payroll deduction
contributed to Dignity/NOVA if the individual wishes to claim a deduction on his or her tax return. While D/NoVA does not
have or keep a record of the amount of dollar bills, etc. that an individual puts into the collection basket, we do keep a
record of an individual’s contributions made by check.
Starting January 1, 2007, IRS advised that donors must keep better records -- checks, receipts, credit card
statements, etc. -- for all cash donations no matter how small in order to deduct those contributions from an individual's
tax return. D/NOVA is in compliance with these requirements and will continue to make every effort
to correctly document all contributions made by check. By February 1, 2008, D/NOVA will be providing documentation to
all individuals who made contribution by check in 2007. D/NOVA has no way of identifying cash contributions other than
check placed in the collection basket unless the individual places the contribution in a sealed envelope with identifying
information including the contributor's name and address or makes other arrangements with the Treasurer.
If you have questions concerning deductibility of contributions, consult your tax adviser. Questions concerning
D/NOVA finances and reporting should be addressed to the President or Treasurer.

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (Sunday, January
13, 2008)
The Proclamation of the Date
of Easter on Epiphany dates from
a time when calendars were not readily available. It was necessary to make known the date of Easter in advance, since many
celebrations of the liturgical year depend on its date. The number of Sundays that follow Epiphany, the date of Ash Wednesday,
and the number of Sundays that follow Pentecost are all computed in relation to Easter. Although calendars now
give the date of Easter and the other feasts in the liturgical year in advance, the Epiphany proclamation still has value.
It is a reminder of the centrality of the resurrection of the Lord in the liturgical year and the importance of the great
mysteries of faith which are celebrated each year. Since Ash Wednesday is less than a month away, the Epiphany Proclamation
is reprinted here to alert all to the early start of Lent this year.
“Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us,and shall ever
be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries
of salvation. Let us recall the year’s culmination, the Easter
Triduum of the Lord: his Last Supper, his crucifixion and death, his burial, and
his rising, celebrated between the evening of the 20th of March
and the evening of the 23rd of March.
Each Easter—as on each Sunday—the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has forever
conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash
Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the 6th
of February. The Ascension
of the Lord will be commemorated on the 4th of May.
Pentecost, the joyful conclusion
of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on May 11th.
And this year the First Sunday of Advent
will be on the 30th of November.
Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the
Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come,
Lord of time and history, be endless praise, forever and ever. Amen.”

St. Blaise Feast Day February 3 (Blessing of Throats after mass on Saturday Feb. 2, 2008)
Many Catholics might remember Saint Blaise's feast day because of the Blessing of the Throats that took place
on this day. Two candles are blessed, held slightly open, and pressed against the throat as the blessing is said. Saint Blaise's
protection of those with throat troubles apparently comes from a legend that a boy was brought to him who had a fish bone stuck in his throat. The boy was about
to die when Saint Blaise healed him.
Prayer in honor of St. Blaise: O GOD, deliver us through the intercession of Thy holy bishop and martyr
Blaise, from all evil of soul and body, especially from all ills of the throat; and grant us the grace to make a good confession
in the confident hope of obtaining Thy pardon, and ever to praise with worthy lips Thy most holy name. Through Christ our
Lord. Amen.

CHRISTMAS EVE, December 24, 2007
MERRY
CHRISTMAS-------A
PROCLAMATION OF THE BIRTH OF CHRIST
Today, the
twenty-fifth day of December, in this, the two thousand seventh year of Our Lord; Unknown ages from the time when God created
the heaves and the earth, and then formed woman and man in God’s own image; Seven thousand years after the flood, when
God made the rainbow shine forth as a sign of the covenant; Twenty-one centuries from the time of Abraham, and Sarah; Thirteen
centuries after Moses led the people of Israel out of Egypt; Eleven hundred years from the time of Ruth and the Judges; One
thousand years from the anointing of David as king; In the sixty-fifth week according to the prophecy of Daniel; In the one
hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad, the seven hundred and fifty-second year from the foundation of the city of Rome; The forty-second
year of the reign of Octavian Augustus, the whole world being at peace; Jesus Christ was born in the city of Bethlehem of
Judea, the Son of Mary. Today is the nativity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to the flesh.
A Christmas Message from our
president, Beth, to the Dignity/NoVA community:
Over 2,000 years ago God blessed our world with
the presence of Jesus, in the form of a tiny baby. His parents, Mary and Joseph, protected him and raised him in a world of
poverty and violence not unlike our own today. But the life and teachings of Jesus brought incomparable generosity and love
to all humanity. Today over 2 billion Christians all around the world celebrate the birth of this wondrous God-Child.
May we join with them in spreading the light and love of this incarnate God to all our earthly brothers and sisters. Have a blessed Christmas and a happy and healthy new year!

The Advent Wreath
Advent wreaths can be made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life. The laurel signifies victory
over persecution and suffering; pine, holly, and yew, immortality; and cedar, strength and healing. Holly also has a special
Christian symbolism: The prickly leaves remind us of the crown of thorns, and one English legend tells of how the cross was
made of holly. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of
the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. Any pine cones, nuts, or seedpods used to decorate the wreath also symbolize
life and resurrection. All together, the wreath of evergreens depicts the immortality of our soul and the new, everlasting
life promised to us through Christ, the eternal Word of the Father, who entered our world becoming truly human and who was
victorious over sin and death through His own passion, death, and resurrection.
The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. A tradition is that each week represents one thousand
years, to sum to the 4,000 years from Adam and Eve until the Birth of the Savior. Three candles are purple and one is rose.
The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this
time. The rose candle was lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest wore rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday
is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half
over and they are close to Christmas.
The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first
coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to judge the living and the dead. The light again signifies
Christ, the Light of the world. A white candle placed in the middle of the wreath represents Christ and is lit on Christmas
Eve. (Copied in part from

Happy Thanksgiving
This Thanksgiving week, we take a break from the pressures of daily life to give thanks
to our God for the gift of life and for the countless blessings of family and friends and for our faith community. May all those who are traveling this holiday season be safe in their journeys.

Dignity NoVA Annual Meeting and Elections
The Annual Meeting and elections
of a new board of directors takes place tonight immediately following mass. The social will follow the meeting. Many thanks
to all of those who considered serving our community as a member of the board of directors and congratulations to those who
are elected tonight.
Book of Remembrance
It is the Church's custom and tradition to remember all the deceased, and particularly
our deceased loved ones during the month of November. We celebrated All the Saints on Thursday and All Souls Day on
Friday which was a day to remember all the deceased - those who, like each of us - are called to be saints. The Second
Vatican Council reminds us that the vocation to which each of us is called is the vocation of holiness - to be the best saints
we can be in the midst of the life we live out each and every day.
Our Book of Remembrance keeps before our eyes the names, the memories and the lives of those who have gone before
us and who have served in some way as mentors and teachers for us in the ways of life and faith. You will have the opportunity
when you come to Mass to add the names of deceased friends and loved ones in the Book of Remembrance which will be placed
on the altar during our Masses in November. We ask God in every Mass to give these deceased loved ones eternal rest and life
on high in God's realm.

Our Annual General
Membership meeting will be at ICOH after mass on 11/3. At that time, we will conduct elections for the new Board of
Directors. The president
and treasure will also report on items of interest to the community, and any questions about our chapter will be in order. We have candidates for 3 out of 4 of the officer positions
on the Board as well as candidates for both at-large positions. We still need a candidate to run for the position of Secretary.
In addition, our new draft bylaws will be discussed and voted upon at the meeting.
CANDIDATES STATEMENTS:
For President: Beth W...........The church community
of D/NoVA means a great deal to me--it is my spiritual home. I have been a member of Dignity since 1982 and have served in
various capacities (choir member, lector, Eucharistic minister, At-Large Board member, and President). I am offering
to serve as President for the coming term. I hope to help our chapter increase in membership and activities, both religious
and social. I welcome the suggestions and assistance of D/NoVa members in improving our chapter.
For Vice President: Mark J......I would like to serve one more term as vice-president of D/NoVA to help complete unfinished business
and to work towards building a better, brighter chapter in the year ahead.
For Secretary:
Vacant
For Treasurer:
David L.......I have been attending services sponsored by D/NoVA for many years and have served as treasurer of D/NoVA
for the past two terms. During that time, I have gained as much if not more from my involvement with the D/NoVA community,
especially the personal relationships I have developed. I ask for your vote as I seek re-election.
At Large: Karen
P......I am willing to serve another term as an At-Large member.
At Large: Laura
H...I'd like to be considered for the BODs as an At-Large member. Being at large will give me insight into D/NoVA where
I feel I have found a spiritual home often missing from my adult life.
Nov.
10: We will have a special service on 11/10 in honor of our Veterans.
Nov. 30: NOVAM presents a “Concert
for Hope” for World AIDS Day.

Solidarity Sunday Pledge

I pledge: I will work for civil and human rights for all people,
including gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgender. Civil rights are not special rights. I will seek to stop jokes
and unkind language about anyone, including gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgender when spoken in my presence. Words
that hurt and bigotry are not funny. I will speak out against any slander, debasement, lies or dehumanization of anyone,
including gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgender, including when spoken by political or religious leaders. Violent
speech leads to physical violence. I will work to stop physical violence against anyone, including violence against gays,
lesbians, bisexuals or the transgender. Violence against any person is violence against all people. |
Breath of the Spirit (abridged) Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 ; II
Timothy 1:6-8,13-14; Luke 17:5-10
For Jesus, faith isn't a commodity to which one can add ounces or inches. Faith doesn't require
an increase of volume as much as it demands to be put to use. Those who operate from just a miniscule of faith can "move trees"
if they actually utilize that faith. Christian faith revolves around carrying on the dream the historical Jesus originally
had and passed on to his followers. In the late 600s and early 500s B.C.E., the prophet Habakkuk tried to keep the dream alive
which Yahweh centuries before had instilled in the Chosen People. They dreamt of living freely in their own land, in control
of their own destiny. Though the Israelites had believed that dream would be fulfilled after their great nemesis, Assyria,
was definitely defeated in 626 B.C.E., Babylon's rapid rise created yet one more period of fear and instability. Their dream
was close, yet so far. That's why Yahweh commands the prophet, "Write down the vision. (It) still has its time, presses on
to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; if it delays, wait for it. It will surely come, it will not be late." In other words,
"Hang in there! Dreams take a long time to come true."
There's one difference between Habakkuk and Jesus' followers. Unlike the prophet's audience,
we must accept some responsibility for our faith-dreams' fulfillment. Only we, with the Holy Spirit's help, can cause them
to take flesh and move our world to the place God wants it to be. It takes lots of determination and hard work to become the
community Jesus intends us to be. In the lifetime of many of us, our experience of Vatican II demonstrated that reality. It
didn't all happen 45 years ago. Those 2,500 bishops who attempted "to stir into flame" the dream of Jesus presumed we'd continue
the stirring for as long as we lived.

Twenty-sixth
Sunday in Ordinary Time
Many thanks to
Father Stephen and to the Liturgy Committee for the inspirational and comforting anointing service last Saturday night.
At the BoD meeting
last Sunday, our president read a letter from Elizabeth P. who has served as our Secretary. For personal reasons, Elizabeth
will not be able to fulfill her duties as Secretary and will not be able to run for election to the board for the next term.
The Board expressed its understanding of the personal pressures which enable each of us to serve as best we can, when and
where we can. On behalf of the entire community, the Board wishes to express its gratitude for Elizabeth's generous service
in the past. Her professionalism and spirit will be sorely missed at the BoD meetings.
We welcome Father
Tim as our presider tonight. Please be sure to introduce yourself to Father Tim and make him feel welcome. We are very grateful
for his willingness to cross that river and preside for us.
“Second Saturday Seminars” are coming. Watch for it!
We will be at St. Clement's again next
Saturday, 10/6.
At that time, we will have a blessing of pictures of our beloved pets. Please remember to bring your pictures to mass next
Saturday. Following mass, there will be a fund-raising dinner. We will be raising funds for a variety of animal related charities.
Further information about the specific charities, methods of donations, directions, etc. will be provided separately.
Next Saturday
we will also be joining Dignity chapters all over the country in celebrating Solidarity Sunday. Additional information about
Soladarity Sunday can be found on the D/USA web site at dignityusa.org

its meeting last Sunday, the BoD extended the deadline for filing of nominations for the BoD to 10/7. The offices of President,

FREDERICK 'FREDDY'
WILLIAMS
It is with great sadness
that we report on the passing of Freddy Williams, John's brother. The following notice was published in The
Virginian-Pilot on April 11, 2007.
Frederick "Freddy" Williams,
formerly of Virginia Beach, passed away suddenly April 5, 2007, while visiting his brother in Arlington, Va. Born April 30,
1940, to the late John J. Williams Sr. and Frances Shea Williams, he was a lifelong resident of the North End, until moving
to Florida and cruising in and around the Miami area. He is survived by his brother, John J. Williams Jr. of Arlington; his
sister, Frances E. Williams of Miami; two nieces and three nephews, and eight grandnieces and nephews. A celebration of his
life will take place at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1404 Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, Friday at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
please make donations to his favorite activity, the Special Olympics. Inquiries may be directed to Advent Funeral & Cremation
Services, Annapolis & Falls Church, Va.
John advised us that Freddy suffered
a massive heart attack last Thursday and died in the ER at Arlington Hospital. Freddy's funeral will be this
weekend at their old parish church in Virginia Beach, Star of the Sea.
Needless to say, all
of us knew and loved Freddy very much, and always enjoyed being with him when he was able to attend our services while visiting
with John. We share in the grief being experienced by John and the family. We will miss seeing Freddy at
our masses and having him as part of our family.
Our thoughts and prayers are
with Freddy and John and the family.

Bedore (1901 Wyoming Avenue, NW). D/NoVA members are most welcome to join in the fun.
FREDERICK "FREDDY"
WILLIAMS
In memory of our deceased member
Freddy Williams, the board of directors authorized a contribution to the Special Olympics of Northern Virginia. This
contribution was in keeping with the family's request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Freddy's memory to his
favorite activity, the Special Olympics. Freddy is dearly missed by all in our D/NoVA family, and our deepest sympathies
go out to his brother John and the rest of Freddy's loving and caring family. Eternal rest grant unto him O, Lord. And
let perpetual light shine upon him...May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest
in peace. Amen

ANOINTING:
JUNE 16th
On Saturday,
June 16, we will have an anointing service as part of our regular liturgy. Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments.
The sacrament prays for the physical or emotional healing of the ill person, if that be the will of God. Its primary purpose,
however, is spiritual. It offers us grace to strengthen our faith and our ability to accept and endure the trials and struggles
that come with serious illness. The sacrament was commonly known before Vatican II as Extreme Unction or Last Rites. This
name arose because over time the sacrament became more identified as a preparation for death. Vatican II sought to bring the
administration of the sacrament back to its original and fuller meaning. One should not wait until death is imminent to receive
the sacrament, and we should no longer use the term "last rites" to refer to the sacrament.
PLAY BALL!
Join DW and other gay organizations
from the greater DC area at the Washington Nationals baseball game on Monday evening, July 16th. There will
be a pregame tailgate party in the RFK parking lot. Those wanting game tickets should contact DW's Jake Hudson at jhudson@imf.org

- 15th ANNIVERSARY RECAP
While it was not standing room only,
a wonderful crowd of over 50 members and friends gathered at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill Social Hall after mass on Saturday,
June 2, 2007 to celebrate Dignity Northern Virginia's 15th anniversary.
A bountiful, beautifully decorated
buffet table awaited the crowd. Fr. Joe H. led us in grace, but someone else beat him to the head of the enhanced potluck
dinner line.
As dining progressed, Mark J. and
Anje B. started the program which was brilliantly conceived, produced, written and directed by Mark. Following a rousing opening
number by the music director, Greg C., there was an emotional tribute to our members who have passed away. Into a bed of white
roses, an individual red rose was placed in honor of those who are now in heaven. For James and Robert, Eve A. and Monica
R. placed the memorial red roses. Mr. and Mrs. Rathsack placed red roses in memory of their beloved daughter and our friend,
Sarah. Mark J. and Tom J. carried roses in memory of Mark's mom, Belle. John D.'s widow, Kathleen, placed the rose in his
honor. It was so great to see Michael L. who delivered a moving eulogy at the memorial mass which preceded the dinner and
who carried the rose for his recently deceased partner, Steve S. Marti C. placed a rose for John W. who was not able to be
there to do it as a memorial to his recently deceased brother, Freddy. And finally, David L. and Eileen H. placed the remaining
roses in the vase as others in the room remember those who are now in heaven.
As the program continued with music
and songs, Beth W., our president, presented our 2007 Community Service Awards to Susan K., Jack K., and Harry B. to honor
their commitment to our community by their tireless efforts as musician, sacristan, and liturgy chair, respectively. A spread
of flowers in the honor of each of them will be located in the chapel as Dignity/USA gathers in Austin, TX in early July for
their convention.
Beth also presented Lifetime Achievement
Awards to Paul W., Laura N., and Eve A. to honor their years of leadership and commitment to Dignity NoVA. A check in the
amount of $100 each will be sent to Mercy Corps in Portland, OR, in honor of Paul; and another $100 check will be sent to
St. Clement’s in honor of Laura. A check in the amount of $250 will be sent to the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM)
in honor of Eva and to show our community’s overall support for NOVAM as a “Friend of NOVAM
Beth W. then presented two Presidential
Awards. The first went to David L. for his service to our community as treasurer and scheduler. The last award of the evening
was given to Sister Jeannine Gramick in recognition and celebration of her 30th anniversary as the co-founder and
leader of New Ways Ministry.
After the finale (which included
a light show,) a bouquet of flowers was presented to Beth W., Mark J., Elizabeth P., David L., Karen P., Eileen H., Anje B.,
Greg C., and Susan K. for all of their hard work in putting on the celebration; and a special thanks was given to Tom J. and
Tom Y. for their technical assistance on the video and audio presentations.
It was truly a remarkable, memorable
evening. Thanks to all those who we may have forgotten to mention and who helped with the celebration of D/NOVA’s 15th
anniversary of service to the GLBT community of Northern Virginia. The clean-up crew worked late into the night and we think
that we left the hall in better condition than we found it; and a special thanks to that little group that stayed even later
into the night to help resolve the problems with the unlocked door.
And most important, thanks to all
those who attended, filled the church with music and the hall with merriment, shared your friendship and delicious food, and
provided a firm foundation for us to launch into our next generation. Happy Anniversary! |

1. TREASURER'S NOTE
The treasurer has prepared and distributed tax letters
to those individuals who made contributions to D/NOVA by check. D/NOVA is required to provide by January 31, 2007,
a statement to individuals who contributed a separate donation of $250 or more during 2006. If you made a separate
contribution of more than $250 in 2006, you will need a statement to this effect from D/NOVA to deduct the contribution from
your tax returns. If you do not receive such a statement, please let the treasurer know. If you did not contribute
more than $250 in any separate donation, your contributions are still tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
You can take the deduction based on your own records and you do not need a statement from D/NOVA to take the deductions.
However, the treasurer will be glad to furnish any individuals who request it, a statement reflecting our records
of your donations. Please let the treasurer know if there are any errors in the statements provided.
Starting
January 1, 2007, IRS advises that both donors and charities must keep better records -- checks, receipts, credit card statements,
etc. -- for all cash donations no matter how small in order for those contributions to be deductible from an
individual's tax return. According to IRS, "cash" means any form of monetary contribution including cash,
checks, money orders, credit card contributions, etc. D/NOVA has and will continue to make every effort to correctly
document all contributions made by check. D/NOVA has no way of identifying cash contributions other than check,
placed in the collection basket unless the individual places the contribution in a sealed envelope with identifying information
including the date, the contributor's name and address, or makes other arrangements with the Treasurer. Remember that
for your contributions to D/NOVA in 2007, in order for those contributions regardless of the amount to be deductible, you
must maintain as a record of the contribution, a bank record (such as a canceled check) or a statement from D/NOVA either
of which must include the date and amount of the contribution.
2. Our New Hymnals
As most of you are already aware, we have new hymnals, "Breaking
Bread 2007," for the new liturgical year. In addition to most of the hymns we sing at mass, the book contains the
Order of Mass from pages 3 to 31 which allows you to follow along with the mass especially the Nicene Creed on page 12 which
we have been reciting at mass. Also, the book contains the weekly Scripture Readings which permit you to follow along
as the scriptures are being proclaimed. For example, the reading that we will use on February 17 can be found beginning
on page 73. In previous years, the hymnals we used only included the songs we sing.
We would appreciate your thoughts and opinions on the new hymnals.
They cost a little bit more than the old hymnals, and they are a little bigger than the old hymnals. Please let
the president know your thoughts on this so that we will have some guidance when it comes time to order new books for the
next liturgical year this summer. You could also send your comments to our D/NOVA email account at dignitynova@gmail.com or you can leave a message on our Voice Mail at 703-912-1662. Thank you for your assistance.
3. D/NOVA NEEDS YOU!
D/NOVA exists as a community of faith because of the kind and generous
actions of our members. The contributions of time and talent and treasure keep our group going and going and going.
However, there are several areas of concern where D/NOVA needs help now. We are in need of help with our web site which
has gone down. Please let us know if you can help us put together a new web site. We need a greeter who can
greet folks as they come into the church and pass out our Bulletin as they leave after mass. We are always in
need of volunteers to help with the various roles during the liturgy. We are contemplating having a Seder again this
year, and we need volunteers to help accomplish this event. Easter is very early this year and your help in preparing
the joint DC/NOVA Holy Week programs is needed. And in May, D/NOVA will celebrate it's 15th anniversary of service
to the GLBT community of Northern Virginia. Your assistance in helping to put together a truly memorable event is needed.
As you can see, there is a lot on our plate right now. The
Board of Directors and our Liturgy Chair simply cannot pull off all of these tasks alone. D/NOVA needs your help.
The Board wants to revive and energize our community, but we can't do it without the support and active involvement of the
community. Please consider how you can help our community thrive and prosper. Please chat with the president or
any member of the board or our Liturgy Committee Chair to find out further information about our needs. Your involvement
will not only strengthen our community, but you will also find that it will be very rewarding both personally and
spiritually.
Needless to say, there are so many demands on your time.
We understand your limits and appreciate
all that you have done and continue to do to make D/NOVA work. As you consider our request for assistance, please
reflect on the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where
there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair,
hope; where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled
as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we
are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
God Bless!
4. D/NOVA Board Meeting
The next meeting of the D/NOVA board of directors will take place on
Sunday, 2/18, starting at 2:00 PM at the home of David L.
