Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you dont understand a direction, ASK BEFORE PROCEEDING! Students are not allowed to work alone in the laboratory. Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, samples, experiments, or other materials that do not belong to you. The Science Classroom is to be used cooperatively by all St. Marys students. Perform only those experiments that are assigned to you. Labs are selected and designed safely. Unauthorized experimentation creates safety concerns. During laboratory sessions, no eating or drinking is allowed. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited. You are responsible to keep your work area clean and orderly. Be alert and cautious in the Science Classroom. REPORT ANY UNSAFE CONDITIONS YOU OBSERVE. Dispose of all laboratory materials as directed. Chemicals may not be discarded in sinks; sinks are for water only. Use lab equipment only as directed. Questions about equipment should be asked BEFORE equipment use. When working with chemicals or lab equipment, keep hands away from face, mouth and body. WASH HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTER ANY USE OF CHEMICAL OR BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY MATERIALS. Monitor your work at all times. DO NOT LEAVE EXPERIMENTS UNATTENDED. Know the locations of all laboratory safety equipment, and how to obtain adult assistance if needed. Know what to do in the event of a fire alarm (drill or actual) during class/lab. Containers should be closed, electrical equipment and heat sources turned off. Clothing When using chemicals, heat, or glassware, students must WEAR SAFETY GLASSES- NO EXCEPTIONS! Dress properly for lab activities. This includes: Secure long hair, dangling jewelry, ties Proper footwear Wear lab apron/gloves as directed Accidents and Injuries Report any accidents IMMEDIATELY, even if they seem not important to you. Accidents that need to be reported include any injury (cut, burn, chemical on skin, etc.) or potential for injury (broken glass, spill of chemical, etc.). If you or a lab partner is hurt or need assistance as the result of an accident, loudly yell for the teacher. In the event of any accident, DO NOT PANIC! Panic results in more confusion and potential for harm. Handling Chemicals While the chemicals we will be handling in laboratory at St. Marys are safe household chemicals (e.g., vinegar, ammonia, detergents, etc.), they are chemicals and must be handled properly. NEVER TASTE OR SMELL A CHEMICAL. If it is necessary to use odor as an identifying characteristic of a chemical, use hand to waft air over chemical and sniff air, maintaining face away from chemical. NEVER USE UNIDENTIFIED CHEMICALS! Label all chemicals transferred to other containers, and minimize waste. (Take only the amount you need.) Do not return used chemicals to the original container. NEVER REMOVE CHEMICALS FROM THE SCIENCE CLASSROOM or LAB! When diluting an acid, pour the acid into water. Proper Use of Lab Equipment Never handle broken glassware with your bare hands. Notify the teacher and clean up as directed. Glass must be disposed of properly. Examine glassware for chips, cracks, and dirt before use. Report concerns to the teacher. If you do not understand how to properly use equipment, ask for assistance from the teacher. Use of a hotplate or any other heat source is allowed only under the direct supervision of the teacher. Use only approved Pyrex or Kimex glassware for heating liquids. Heated materials may remain hot long after removal from a heat source. They must be treated with caution. Never immerse hot glassware or heated laboratory materials in cold water. Place heated materials on a heat resistant surface only! NEVER look into a container that is being heated!
