Grade 6 is an "Earthly" Science year!

A note to parents:  Grade 6 science focuses on the planet Earth as well as some basic physical science and biological science principles that support this study.  Please encourage your child to begin looking at the "big picture" of the world.  While middle school science is based in 3 years  of studying 3 separate aspects of science, they are all intertwined.

Current Study Guide with Learning Objectives

Please review the following:

  • All vocabulary from the chapter (know it’s meaning, don’t just memorize the definition)
  • The difference between thermal energy and temperature (remember TE is the energy; temp. is just an average measurement of KE)
  • The difference between potential and kinetic energy
  • Examples of heat conductors and why they conduct heat
  • Examples of heat insulators
  • Pattern of heat transfer (hi to low areas)
  • Thermal energy is the total of KE and PE in a substance
  • Examples of how thermal energy (heat) transfers (conduction, convection and current action, radiation)
  • The difference in waves (compression is matter and wave in same direction, transverse is opposite directions)
  • Wave measurement (frequency, amplitude, wavelength)
  • Examples of electromagnetic spectrum (radio, microwaves, gamma radiation- damages skin)
  • Actions of light (absorption, refraction, reflection)
  • The magnetic field of the earth

Long Term Assignments

Grade 6 work contains projects that require students to put together an understanding of science that will carry them through grades 7, 8, and beyond.

For our next project, the students want to build solar ovens, but it hasn't been assigned yet.
