Welcome
St. Mary's Catholic School
Class of 2010!

Smilie Face

To my Grade 8 Students,

As I have told you many times, I want each of you to leave St. Mary's with the overall science knowledge and skills necessary to excel in high school, as each class before you has done.  The topics from grade 8 science will prepare you for future studies in earth science, chemistry, and physics.

Parents,

I devote time in science to applying math principles to science problems.  In physical science, much of the work relies on using math skills in conjunction with science equations and relationships.  This is not the same task the students  work on in math, but rather integration of past math work and science knowledge.   Part of the learning goals for this year are to develop science skills, including calculational accuracy, as it applies to our topics of study.

Current Study Guide and Learning Objectives:

To prepare for the upcoming Chapter, you should review the following:

Chapter vocabulary

Units of measure: AMU= atomic mass unit; used for # of protons and atomic mass

Concepts:

·        The relationship between proton, neutron, electron (the charge, mass of each)

·        Set up of the periodic table ( period left ą right, group (family) top ą bottom

·        Periods are arranged by periodic function of their proton #

·        Groups contain elements with similar characteristics and reactivities

·        Examples groups (1= alkali metals, 2= alkaline earth metals…18= noble gases)

·        Electron # in outer shell determines reactivity/bonding potential (remember 8 electrons is the goal)

·        Reactivity decreases as you move across a period (L to R)

·        Properties of metals, non-metals, and metalloids

·        Unique properties of hydrogen

Formulas and Math:

·        How to determine an atomic mass of an element

New York State Science  Review Assignments

Grade 8 students will complete the NYS Performance Test and Written Test in Intermediate Science-8.  The tests are adminsitered in the Spring.  We devote time in class to reviewing grade 5-8 science, and the tests are a good indicator of overall success before the students embark on their high school coursework.

  • The links below will provide a basic review of grades 6 and 7 vocabulary.  They're a wonderful resource.

Long Term Assignments

Grade 8 science covers many applicational areas, but also has the goal of allowing the student the opportunity to assimilate 4 years of study before undertaking very subject specific study in high school.

Our first project looked at the history of physical science, both as a timeline and as a time of rapid growth with impact on the world at large.

Next, we will begin a project on compounds and chemical bonding.
