Parents -- You do not have to be a musician in order to help your child to practice. Your
interest will encourage and motivated your child. Here are some ways you can help and encourage your young musician:
- Encourage your child to set a time and place for practicing and be sure that your child follows through with it.
As much as possible, have your child practice when you are home.
- Ideally, spend some time sitting and listening to your child’s work and asking questions or making positive
comments. Ask him or her to show you what is being worked on and how it all fits together. Praise goes a long way toward sparking
interest in the young musician.
- Have your child to use the yellow play-along CD in the “Essential Elements Plus” method book. There are
58 tracks that cover the first 58 exercises in the book. By playing along with the CD, your child can play along with the
recording and model tone production by listening to the recorded soloist.
- Help your child remember to bring his/her instrument and lesson books to school on lesson and rehearsal days.
- Keep necessary supplies on hand, such as reeds for woodwind instruments and oil/slide grease for brass instruments.
- Before the practicing is over, have your child play a one-minute recital for you or a family member! This is always effective
in building performance responsibilities. Plus, every instrumentalist enjoys the opportunity to display his or her talents!
- Sign the practice chart before each lesson, verifying the amount of home practice accomplished for each lesson.
