6. Dr Lucy Gibney, an Emergency Room Physician and mother of a child with food allergies was our January 29th speaker. She presented an informative lecture on food manufacturing issues. Topics she discussed included FALCPA - The Food Allergy Labeling and Consumer Protection Act. This was initiated by the FAAN (Food Allergy and Anyphlyaxis Network) and became a law effective January 1st 2006. It requires food companies to declare whether a food product contains any of the 8 main allergens. The 8 main allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, soy, wheat, shellfish, and fish. She also discussed the controversy of the "may contain" language used by many food companies. She informed us that when the FAAN tested foods with the "may contain peanuts" labeling the offending allergen was found 7% of the time. We thank Dr Gibney for her interesting speech and yummy treats!
