I have been a certified Bradley Method® instructor for 10
years. In those years I have taught over 430 women and couples about their
choices in childbirth in order to help them have the birth they desire. Over
85% of those mothers have had natural vaginal childbirths. This number includes
the mothers who come to class unsure if they will have a medicalized birth and choose another course in labor. For the
mothers who desire more support, I attend births as a certified birth assistant or doula. I have attended over 180 births at home, in a birth center, or in a hospital in many different
states. I have experience with · Single
moms, military moms, teenagers, mature couples, alternative moms and abused women · Women
who are low risk or high risk · Women who have
an unique need for extra support · Women who desire a natural vaginal birth · Women needing or interested in a medically managed births · Women who are working towards a VBAC · Hospital births, Birth Center births, Water Births and
Home Births
For my births, I choose a midwifery practice that had an obstetrician
on staff. I was considered a high risk pregnancy due to cervical incompetence
from cancer surgery and this practice offered me all the advantages of a low risk birth in a birth center while monitoring
me for potential complications. It was the nurse midwife who asked me about my
birth preferences and suggested the Bradley Method® Childbirth Classes. My husband
would tell you that it was ‘the nutrition and exercise taught by the instructor that made for such a healthy mother
and baby. And it was the natural vaginal deliveries that had me on my feet and
bonding with our children in no time.’ Our first child, Joseph was a fast natural and vaginal posterior
delivery at 37.3 weeks. We were both healthy and were discharged from the birth
center early. My husband and I felt that the Bradley Method® prepared us
completely for the birth and postpartum period. So ten months later, we sat through
another Bradley Method® Class series as I was pregnant again. Interestingly,
we learned even more the second time around as we were more relaxed and confident in our abilities. Again, my labor was equally fast. Daniel also was a natural
vaginal posterior delivery just like his brother at 37.0 weeks. There were a
few more variations or complications in Daniel’s pregnancy and delivery but we felt equally comfortable at the
birth. My husband and I feel that the core focus of the Bradley Method®
was critical to our development as parents. The education we received and the classroom and home practices prepared us for
these births. It empowered me as a mother and showed me a new personal strength within myself.
With this strength, I began the certification process in Dan’s pregnancy and post partum period. I certified
quickly and have been working with pregnant moms ever since.
