(the) hudson valley concert series

Dedicated to the fusion of popular and art cultures in music, the Hudson Valley Concert Series seeks to merge the borders between classical and popular music by presenting professional musicians from the Hudson Valley who demonstrate that chamber music can encompass a variety of styles and essences.  Traditional and new classical music, jazz and cabaret, folk and pop/rock, all juxtaposed within the incomparable confines of the Howland Cultural Center.  The 2009 series is produced and curated by Madera Vox.

Thursday, February 5, 7:30 pm – The Sumi Tonooka Trio

The first concert of the 2009 Series begins on Thursday, February 5 with pianist, composer and Beacon resident Sumi Tonooka (pronounced To-NO-ka).  Her trio’s new CD Long Ago Today, which will be celebrated at the February 5th concert in Beacon and at a February 19 concert at “The Barge” in Brooklyn, is a Jazz Improv NY magazine’s 2008 “Best of Jazz” pick.  Peter Watrous of Musician Magazine writes:“Revelatory . . . reminds you that originality is possible. She’s made her phrasing and touch personal; her lines breathe. . . . Her compositions . . . are rock solid without a moment of indecision or mistake. Technique is mastered by imagination, inspiration by intellect. She comes to her own conclusions, which is what jazz is all about.”

Thursday, April 16, 7:30 pm – The Callen Sisters

With their unique instrumentation (harp and guitar), soaring vocal harmonies, and unforgettable original songs, The Callen Sisters make an impact from the first listen. The duo will be joined by Madera Vox percussionist David Gluck, Dan Castellani on keyboards, and Chris Anderson on bass.

This project made possible (in part) through a grant from the Dutchess County Arts Council,  administrator of public funds through

NYSCA’s Decentralization Program

Thursday, May 21, 7:30 pm – “Uncommon Ground”

“Uncommon Ground” brings together the unlikely combination of precise, classically trained violin and bass lines with the soul of bluegrass-influenced vocals, mandolin and guitar to drive a band whose fresh, distinctive sound is winning fans wherever they perform.  Violinist Rachel Handman and bassist Phil Helm are both principals with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and the Ridgefield Symphony.
