Our Relationship with Gravity

"Some individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body, others as a constant fatigue, yet others as an unrelentingly threatening environment.  Those over forty may call it old age.  And yet all these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored: They are off balance.  They are at war with gravity."  Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.

First developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf over 50 years ago, Structural Integration is a holistic system of bodywork designed to restore a person's body to its natural state of alignment in relationship to the constant force of gravity.

With the passage of time, in combination with our habitual movements, gravity causes our bodies to become less organized and our movements more restricted.  In Structural Integration, we provide a series of 10 sessions, or sometimes individual sessions, to return the body to a more natural state of alignment and ease.  It is then that our bodies can feel grounded, yet not weighed down, and our relationship with gravity shifts to "flow through" our bodies.

How Does It Work?

The whole body is addressed in a series of 10 sessions, in a sequence that allows the body to gradually open, lengthen and expand.

Working to soften and lengthen the fascia (or connective tissue) which envelopes the muscles and muscle fibers, the practitioner applies a deep, gliding stroke across the surface of the client's body.  As this deep, slow pressure warms, softens and hydrates the fascia, its fibers ease apart, thus allowing the release of tight, constricted muscle tissue.

Over a period of weeks, restrictions are freed, and the body starts to lengthen.  As these structural changes are integrated, clients may report a renewed feeling of ease and comfort in their bodies.

A Typical Session

Postural Evaluation: For this, clients should wear their everyday under garments.  By observation, the practitioner assesses the client's structure for imbalances in order to determine the strategy for the client's session.

During the Session: The client remains clothed in underwear for the duration of the session, while the work is administered on a massage table, or with the client seated on a bench.  The active participation of the client is very much a part of the Structural Integration process, at times to move a joint or stretch a limb to facilitate the practitioner's stroke, or to step down from the table momentarily to evaluate the ongoing structural changes.  In this way, a heightened new awareness of the changing body is learned, important for allowing the work to integrate outside of the office visits.
