Scott County Retired Teachers
September 10, 2009
Irene Akemon welcomed those present and the pledge was given followed by the blessing given by Bob Hollis. There were
30 present and one guest.
Following a most delicious meal, Akemon called the meeting to order. Bob Hollis won the 50-50 but gave his share to the
association.
The secretary's report was read and approved. The treasurer reported a balance of $469.53. There were 28 memberships paid
prior as of today. Cheryl Davenport stated that the additional money was a one time payment. It is not a COLA payment. That
was not accomplished. Everyone should note that no taxes were taken out of the payment.
Becky Bearveldt requested that the meal be prior to the meeting. She stated that it was too noisy for business to be conducted.
It was agreed that the meal would be at 11:30.
The business meeting and program would follow the meal. The Association had received a Honor Certificate for its effort
in recruitment of members.
There will be a Teacher Appreciation Day on Wednesday, October 7. The reservation will need to be made by September 18.
No meal.
The district meeting will be September 24 at Paoli. There are three members attending: Irene Akemon, Jackie McGannon,
and Cheryl Davenport. The topic will be about the reasons why the pension was not funded.
Willma Hollis announced the upcoming Toby Show being presented for the museum. There is a serious financial need for
the museum's indebtedness. She encouraged all to attend during the presentation at the Southern Baptist Church on the following
dates September 18, 19, and 20. Jackie McGannon announced the Raptor Days on September 25, 26, 27 at Hardy Lake. Janice Stanley
requested that as secretary she needed a list of the members and phone numbers. This would make writing the minutes more efficient.
It was agreed to prepare these for her by Baervelt and Akemon.
Akemon introduced Donna Cheatham as the former and present Scottsburg Girls Basketball Coach. Cheatham gave a history
of her life. In 1967 she took a teaching position at Scottsburg. In 1972, she and Jeannie Phillips started a girls team and
in 1976, the state had a tournament. She felt that the Lord had led her on all of her journeys.
She noted that from her teams there had been a greater than normal outstanding achievements and accomplishments: 2 pro
players, 60 scholarships, 41 had attended Division 2 schools and approximately $5 millions dollars had been involved in these
endeavors. One of her mottoes was: Make today better so tomorrow will be easier.
Meeting Adjourned.
Janice Stanley, secretary
