For
Children and Young Adults
James is frequently invited to give readings and book talks about his
novels at schools and libraries for children, grades 7 to 12. He usually
begins with a humorous, but seriously-intended, talk about the importance
of reading, but he is also available to speak about the writing process,
stressing the importance of rewriting and polishing. Other topics are
also available by arrangement. The ideal size for readings is between
30 and 60 participants.
Fee $250 (plus travel and accommodation) for a 60 minute presentation,
followed by 15 minutes for questions and answers. $450 for two readings
on the same day.
"...
We enjoyed the reading that you did here at Tansley Woods Library in Burlington,
Ontario. That very evening a young lad came in with his mom and asked
for 'any of your books!' How nice to know that young kids are being touched
by your books. Thanks again." - Jane Kopps
For Parents,
Teachers, and Librarians
James also
gives readings, book talks, and lectures for adults on such subjects as:
reading as a regular activity in the home, reading solutions for parents
of reluctant readers, and creative writing. Other popular topics are "the
craft of writing" (including such sub-categories as point of view
and voice in fiction) and "the publishing process".
Praise
for James Heneghan
“I
have had Jim come to my classes for several years to speak to the teachers-in-training
about his books, and they were fascinated when he shared how ideas came
to him and the research that he did for authenticity. He always manages
to include intriguing pieces of information, some of which do not even
make it into his books.Jim has had a good deal of experience in visiting
schools in our area with great response.”

“Over
the past two decades, I have hosted James on many occasions. He has never
disappointed his audience. His love of literature and writing make him
a sought after guest.”

“James
has a wonderful way with children, and encourages and supports their enthusiasm
for writing in his presentations. He effectively adjusts his presentations
to suit the age and grade of the audience, as I have seen in his interaction
with my Grade 3 and Grade 7 students and also with the adult students
in the literacy courses that I teach at UBC. James’ passion for
writing comes through in his enthusiastic discussions with students and
in the sharing of his own writing, and I look forward to continuing to
have James visit us whenever he can.”
