|
A
warm, personal collection of holiday stories that give a look at Christmas
in a simpler time. Recorded live in concert, Maggi shares Christmas
memories from her childhood in Northern Ireland and some of her favorite
tales for Christmas, all with her usual touch of Irish humor and insight.
From the story "Uncle Nelson, Belfast" to the moving story
"Lest We Forget", she captures the special sense of belonging
that was such an intimate part of the Christmas she remembers. |

YOUNGER I'VE BEEN, Stories from a Belfast Childhood

Maggi
Peirce writes, "In everybody's mind there are memories that
cannot be erased. In my last semester at Southeastern Massachusetts
University, Dr. Norman Rehg asked that we write a story weekly.
The entire class groaned. 'Now, now, don't fuss,' he said. 'All
I want is an anecdote.' The word anecdote made all the difference,
and I...haven't looked back since." These autobiographical
stories sketch the world Maggi inhabited in her Belfast childhood
in the 1930s and 1940s. That world is gone, but the feelings and
experiences speak a universal language that resonates even today.
The collection includes "A Friend of My Father's," "The
Lucky Package," "The Most Beautiful Doll in the World,"
"John Knox," "Mine Hut Er Hat Drei Ecken," "The
Haunted House," and "The Awakening."

A
VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS REVELS
various
artists, featuring Maggi Peirce and others
Revels
Records, 2000
|
In
the snowy winter of 1977 audiences flocking to Harvard University's
Sanders Theatre for the seventh Christmas Revels were mildly surprised
to find a Salvation Army band playing outside -- and even more surprised
when the band marched into the theatre after them, merrily thumping
out "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," to begin the show. It
was the start of our first Victorian Revels. ...Here's Maggi Peirce,
who came up from New Bedford to sing in that original show, and our
trusty David Jones, whose first Revels it was. |

READY-TO-TELL TALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Ed.
by Holt and Mooney, August House Press, 2000
|
This
follow up to the editors "Ready-to-Tell Tales" is another
fine anthology of stories introduced by some of the country's most
accomplished storytellers. As the introduction promises, these are
short, gripping stories that "kick-in fast" and are "guaranteed
to work." Grouped according to type (comedy, trickster, tall)
and theme (family and community, codes of conduct, etc.), the selections
include a photo of and suggestions from the storytellers. Indexes
of tales by cultural source and recommended audience conclude this
excellent resource for both school and public library collections.

KEEP
THE KETTLE BOILING, Rhymes from a Belfast childhood
Illustrated
by Barbara Allen. Appletree Press, Ireland, 1983
|
"Keep
the kettle boiling" was only one of many rhymes chanted by girls
as they hopped from one chalked square to another in the narrow streets
of Belfast. The rhymes and songs included here come from Maggi Kerr
Peirce's own memories of childhood spent in the city and surrounding
countryside in the 'thirties and 'forties, yet many of them are as
popular today as ever. They will be immediately recognized by anyone
who has grown up in Belfast or who is familiar with the city, while
others will recall varations of many of the rhymes from their own
childhood. |
