JUNE 2005

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

By Lucy Scott

Our Annual Mini Conference last fall “Creating Supportive Environments for Children,” with Lynn Sumida as our guest speaker, was a big success. In fact Lynn’s presentation on how to get children motivated was so stimulating, exciting, interesting and fun that she will be returning as our speaker for the next Mini Conference, October 21, 2005. This topic will appeal to support staff, teachers, administrators, parents, counsel-lors and just about anyone who works with people.

AGM: We were very fortunate to have Donn Smith as our guest speaker at our AGM in November, 2004. Donn spoke about our well-being and how our system functions beginning from the inside out. He says: “Contrary to popular opinion, self esteem is not something we build; it exists within us, waiting to be released. The answer is already within each of us and is the future for all of us.” Donn’s new book The Extraordinary Within is well worth reading. The book is co-authored by one of our WGABC members and well known William Glasser Senior Faculty, Lynn Sumida. Donn, Lynn and Steve Davis have recently developed a new, thriving company called Excelanation Ltd. and are travelling to various parts of the world giving workshops and addressing businesses and athletic organizations.

August barbeque and swimming party: Kelly Kennedy has kindly offered to host a swimming party and barbecue at her home in Tsawassen, August 20th at 4:00 PM. This event is open to all members and friends. Bring your own drink, barbecue item, and bathing suit and leave the rest up to us.

Our new wgabc.ca website is now well established. As well as contact information and member updates, we have listed members, their businesses and contact information. If you wish to have your business listed on our web site and have taken a Basic Week, and agree with Dr. Glasser’s letter of request, please see the application form in this newsletter.

WGABC is also affiliated with WGI Canada also known as William Glasser Institute Canada. Maureen McIntosh (from New Brunswick) has been our Canadian President and representative to the Glasser Institute for the past three years and has done an excellent job of establishing a new website and connecting us all to maintain a closer network of people within WGI Canada. Maureen has worked hard during the past year to reach out to members and other interested people by developing www.wgicanada.com. an excellent website As the BC representative to WGI Canada for the past three years I have been part of the phone conferencing calls which have occurred every three months. Regular conferencing has provided us with the opportunity to be part of the planning and goal setting of WGI Canada. In July, Maureen will pass over the presidency and representative role to Ellen Gelinas of New Brunswick.

During the last couple of months WGI Canada has developed a new brochure which will be made available to all members and will be forwarded by the Glasser Institute in Los Angeles with every book order.

In August 2006 WGI Canada will be hosting a certification week preceded by a one-day conference in Regina, Saskatchewan. It is our hope that we might set a precedent and hold a bi-annual certification and conference in various parts of Canada. Who knows, maybe BC will have the opportunity of organizing this event.

LEARNING CHOICE THEORY THROUGH SKITS

by Brad Greene, Senior Faculty Member

from the Institute Newsletter Spring 2005

I have found Dr. Glasser's eleven skits to be a very creative way of helping children learn Choice Theory. You can download these skits from the Institute website. As trainers, we have color coded each skit and laminated them. In triads, during intensive weeks and practica, participants teach them to each other. Some teachers have had success where students are even creating other skits after using the eleven Dr. Glasser created. We have found, when teachers actually act out the skits in training, they want to download them to use with their students.

Building trust, making connections and responsible choices, making decisions talking together, acquiring knowledge to using knowledge, authentic assessment, competency, getting along, caring and respecting, moving from external control to internal control, teaching Choice Theory to others and every student can succeed, are topics covered in these eleven short skits.

What I like about them is not only their simplicity, but the fact they involve various multiple intelligences to engage students in the learning process. Often the body kinesthetic and interpersonal intelligences are not included in the learning process, but in these skits they are included as well as learning to learn, reading and writing, creative thinking, problem-solving, and working together in a group. And besides all of that, they are fun!

Download them and try them, ask your students to write additional ones and you might be surprised. A study by the U.S. Department of Labor (see attached) stated that employers were looking for employees who could speak well. Dr. Glasser has been encouraging teachers to do this for years. Here's a created way to include that skill too.

Have you taken the opportunity of checking out www.wgicanada.com? You will find some interesting information on the website. For example, for those of you wishing to apply for a scholarship for a Basic or Advanced Week, the criteria and application can be down-loaded.
