AUGUST 2006

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

By Lucy Scott

Welcome to all new Basic Week participants. We welcome you as new members of WGABC. You will receive a complimentary membership for one year.

Unfortunately, last fall (after our advertising was completed) our Mini Conference plans were cancelled due to an unforeseen provincial teachers’ strike.

We did, however, continue with our AGM and workshop which was held on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at the Peace Memorial Church Centre in Vancouver. Our guest speaker was Steve Davis. Steve addressed our group on the topic of NLP as a model for enhancing performance, and communication. He discussed the similarities and differences between Choice Theory and NLP. Everyone enjoyed the lively discussion that followed.

During the AGM the following people were elected to the executive: Janine Johnson, Rolf Ahrens, Kelly Kennedy, Carolyn Hawkins, Elaine Stoll, Linda Porter, and Lucy Scott

The Executive met in March and had a thorough and in-depth discussion re the future of WGABC. It was unanimously decided at that time that we would not plan a further conference for the fall of 2006.

I am pleased to mention that back by popular demand we are holding another annual barbeque this summer at the home of Kelly Kennedy, on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 4:00PM, 5288 - 4th Ave. Tsawwassen BC., V4M 1G1. Please bring a dish to share, plus your favourite barbeque item. WGABC will supply cutlery, plates and dessert. Kelly has a great pool, so don’t forget your bathing suit.
Please RSVP Lucy by August 23 if you plan to attend and bring a friend/partner etc.

WGI CANADA NEWS

Regina, Saskatchewan is hosting the first of what we hope will become a biannual conference for certification, faculty retreat and Glasser Day. We have approximately 80 people registered for certification and over 100 people registered for the day with Dr. Glasser (which is open to the public). Needless to say, we are thrilled that this event is coming to pass as it will put Canada on the map as a place where we have enough training to warrant our own conference. There are tentative plans for the next conference (2008) to be held in Moncton, N. B.

INSTITUTE NEWS - LOS ANGELES

Dr. Glasser is rigorously pursuing his ideas about public mental health.
In his recent message he writes:
“Our stand that there is such a thing as mental health, is all around us if more of us would open our eyes. We all know plenty of mentally healthy people who have supportive relationships and do not suffer from psychological symptoms. But in our field we are among the few who see that the emperor is naked and always has been.”

Dr. Glasser recommends reading Timothy Scott’s America Fooled, The Truth About Anti-Depressants, Anti-Psychotics, and How We’ve Been Deceived. Dr. Scott has made his book available to members of the William Glasser Institute for only $15.00 including postage. This book can be ordered from the Institute office.

The 2006 International conference is being held in Jersey City this year, across the harbour from NY City, July 12 – 15. I am sure this conference will abound with its usual excitement, enthusiasm and ideas.
In 2007, the International Conference will be held in Seattle. This will give us a wonderful opportunity to attend the conference at affordable prices.

The Institute has a new DVD for sale: Counselling Someone Suffering from a Severe Depression. The price is $45.00 with $5.00 for delivery outside the US.
