From the President Our Sorrento East Annual Meeting of the membership was held on November 5. I would like to thank all those in attendance. Our speaker, Steve Layne’s presentation was very interesting. He spoke about the security of our community and had some key suggestions on the best ways we can keep our homes safe, two of which are “don’t answer the door” to strangers and put a “no solicitation” sign at your door. We unanimously approved our new slate of officers for 2010:
I’m looking forward to seeing you at our annual picnic at the North Jetty Pavilion on December 5, 2009. If you are planning to attend, please fill out the tear off in this newsletter and return it as directed. As I come to the end of my term as your President, I want to express my sincere thanks to all those officers, directors and committee chairpersons who have helped me in the last few years as I served in the different positions on the Board and most recently as President. It is my hope that more of our younger residents will come forward to offer their time in any way they can. When we work together we can keep our community a place to be proud of.
Claire Shomody,
President Security Patrol News Security Patrol is a very important part of our Sorrento East living. Statistics have shown that communities with such patrols incur far fewer “incidents” than those that do not. However, our ranks are thinning and there are gaps in our schedule for lack of patrollers. A number of our newer residents have volunteered to join the patrol but we need others who have not yet served their time. Patrols take place after dark at your convenience for about two hours and with more volunteers, may occur once or twice over a 2-month period. Little time well spent in contrast to the hours we spend otherwise! A cell phone is provided along with flashlight, log book and magnetic signs for your car. A one-hour Sheriff’s class will take place on Tuesday evening December 8, 7:30 p.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church hall (opposite SR41 from our Gate 2). Deputy Sheriff Neal Scully will provide information and instruction at that time. Any and all residents are encouraged to attend, even if you just want to find out about the process. If you are a single, we can match you up with another resident since the optimum is 2 persons per car. Daytime patrolling is also available. Questions may be directed to Captain Mike DiMartino, 966-2652 or Secretary Sally Krell, 966-4989. Please help with this important undertaking to mitigate the rising crime rate that is taking place everywhere. Mike Di Martino, 966-2652 |

Women’s Club of Sorrento East Our Luncheon meeting was held at Mission Valley Country Club on Friday, November 6, 2009 and attended by 54 members. The program was presented by guest speaker, Bill Stulgis, a long-time volunteer and trainer for Sarasota County Search & Rescue Dogs, and his trained dog, Koda. These volunteers are not salaried, but their expenses are reimbursed. They are called on almost continuously whenever anyone is reported missing; to search for buried or hidden bodies, and are on duty during every hurricane since Hurricane Andrew. These dogs have an uncanny, mind-boggling sense of smell. He related a number of cases in which he and Koda had been called on both locally and in other States. Needless to say, the program was interesting and Bill’s Koda, a very sedate but friendly lady, was well received by all our members. Our next luncheon meeting will be held at the Venice Yacht Club on Friday, December 4, 2009. Our program will be a selection of Christmas music performed by local artists from Bradenton, Mary Webb, pianist and her brother Ed Pritchett, violinist. As in past years, members are asked to donate toys for children, unwrapped (but with Christmas wrapping paper included) or money to be donated to Salvation Army for Christmas distribution. If their arms aren’t already overloaded, because there is so much need at this time, members attending are asked to also bring canned goods for Christmas distribution by Salvation Army. Our first day trip of the season will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009. We begin our adventurous day of “Dining Around” arriving at the Peabody Hotel to see the traditional “March of the Peabody Ducks” at the hotel Atrium. Following the Duck Parade, we’ll walk over to the B-line Restaurant to enjoy our first course of progressive dining, and then off to Celebration City to enjoy our entrée in the luxury elegance of the Mona Lisa Suite Hotel. Then on to Gaylord Palms resort for dessert. Price for this fun filled day is $80.00 per person. Interested? Better hurry, only a few tickets left. Contact Pat Smith at 918-0158.
