When's Trash Day?

Pickup of household waste, recyclables, and lawn waste in Sorrento East is normally Thursday morning, after 6 am. Please have your items at the curb by that time.

Special schedules: Waste Management does not work on New Years Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. When one of those holidays occurs Monday through Thursday, or when collection is canceled one of those days because of a weather emergency, routes are rescheduled for the remainder of the week and our collection is one day later than normal, on Friday.

Household and Yard Waste

Household Waste

To distinguish yard waste from household waste, place household waste and materials to be recycled on one side of the driveway and yard waste on the other side.

Place your garbage and trash in cans or bags within 3 feet of your curb (not in the street) before 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day. Garbage cans should not exceed 32-gallon size and weigh no more than 40 pounds when filled. Bags should be closed and unbroken. Loose trash will not be picked up.  Please do not use cardboard boxes–they are recyclable.

Bulky items like chairs and barbecue grills can be put out with your household waste, but very large items like mattresses and sofas must be scheduled, and there may be a charge. For information or to schedule pickup call Waste Management 493-4100.

Hazardous materials

Motor oil, oil filters and automobile tires (up to 4 a week) will be picked up at the curb on your regular pick up day.

Alkaline batteries (but not rechargeable metal hydride batteries) are environmentally safe and you can dispose of them in your regular garbage.

Appliances and electronics (computers, monitors, printers, fax machines) will be picked up curbside at no charge, but you must call Waste Management 493-4100 to schedule pickup.

All other hazardous wastes will not be picked up at curbside; you must take them to one of the three county collection centers. This includes:

  • Paints, stains, paint thinners and solvents
  • Pool and spa chemicals
  • Pesticides, herbicides, poisons and fertilizers
  • Rechargeable batteries (not alkaline based)
  • Propane tanks and bottles from barbecue grills
  • Fluorescent lamps, including the new low-energy bulbs
  • Items such as thermometers containing mercury
  • Beauty products such as nail polish remover, hair permanents
  • Cell phones

For more information see the Sarasota County Hazardous Waste website or Call 861-1530.

Yard Waste

To distinguish yard waste from household waste, please place household waste and recycling materials on one side of the driveway and yard waste on the other side.

Place yard waste in rigid containers that do not exceed 32-gallon size, with a maximum weight of 40 pounds when filled. Items are not to protrude more than 1 foot above the edge of the container. It may also be stored in Kraft bags, or tied in bundles no more than 40 pounds or more than 4 feet in length and 16 inches in diameter. The use of plastic bags is discouraged but allowed.  Cardboard boxes, recycling bins, wheelbarrows, etc. are not acceptable containers for yard waste.

Yard waste is converted to mulch or compost and re-used. Garden hoses, lawn chairs, and other items found in the yard are household waste, not yard waste. Oranges, grapefruit and other citrus fruits are considered garbage and should not be put in your yard waste.
